I’ve been wanting to find this. On May 18, 1992 my mom was in the hospital giving birth to me when this episode aired. All the nurses were watching it when mom had to tell them that the baby was coming out NOW. So I’ve always been curious as to why the nurses were so distracted 😂
When I just watched the clip of Candice singing to the recording of "Natural Woman" in the pilot ep, I said Aretha must be laughing at her right now. Now seeing this scene of Ms. Bergen as Murphy Brown singing the same song to her just-born son, I'm thinking Ms. Franklin must be crying now as well...
i remember back in 90 while visiting fam in texas my cousin and i spent the day tslkin bout old times and about losin her son to leukemia..we both laughed and cried thru the stories..we watched this episode that evening..our conversation held its breath while murphy sang to her baby..i kno we both cried..
Who knew that Murphy's son Avery Brown would follow in her mother's footsteps? It shows in the short-lived 2018 reboot, where he's a reporter for the WOLF network, while Murphy works for rival CNC the Cable News Network.

Ditto. I've not seen this scene since the time it aired; but have never forgotten how moving and beautiful it was. It was what I thought about today as well when I heard the news of Ms. Franklin's death.
I remember the vice president at that time went on TV and chastised her for getting pregnant at 42 out of wedlock. It never dawned on him that she was a character on a TV show and played the role of an unwed mother. This was the same vice president who couldn't spell potatoes. He was all over the news and in the papers for doing both and was teased for a long time..the press really had a field day with him chastising a TV characters pregnancy. One episode has her insult him briefly..Thank God for our country that he didn't have to take over as president or get elected. Who knows what he would of done. But, look at us now in the year 2024...presidents since that era have done something to head us into a downfall. Anyway, I thought doing a season of this show that addresses an unwed mother's choice to keep her baby and raise it alone was great. It reflects on how today's society is more accepting of unwedded mothers to stay single and work than it was back before this show aired.
It helps that Murphy's hair and makeup are immaculate. And that she sounds totally casual. And the baby looks about a week old at least. I looked, sounded and felt like I'd been hit by a bus after giving birth, and my son looked like a slimy, angry Smurf 😂
@x123 I don't know it reminds me more of the Simpsons than Family Guy (unless the episode where Family Guy did it is more recent, I wouldn't know I quit watching Family Guy years ago)
