Personally I think that is actually starting to be used more correctly now a days. Rather then just a term for something that feel authoritarian. But then again the people I hang out with mainly used it to describe Neo Fascist and Neo Nazis. And here locally we have had a upswing of there numbers. (We also has a upswing of them during the 90's so is not something new.)
Quixotes I shall wait for the proof, as no facts can stand without proof. From my point of view as an actual Gen Z, our generation seemed to generally be headed towards progressivism and generally the centre-left to left-wing. You can tell just by the overwhelming hate for Trump and the considerable support for Sanders, as well as our views on other social issues, such as LGBT Rights, concerns for climate change, complaints of the American healthcare system and the praise for universal healthcare, condemnation of the second amendment in the United States, welfare, et cetera. The few kids you see chanting neo-fascist or neo-nazi slogans and displaying such symbolisms are dumb kids trying to be edgy (being on the edge between the socially acceptable and unacceptable) and doesn’t reflect on our generation. Much like how the occasional Southerner who is an *actual* confederate-flag waving anti-Semitic neo-Nazi doesn’t reflect on the entire Gen X, or how Trump doesn’t reflect on the entire generation of Baby Boomers.
Can I just say, at the ending where you recommend your viewers to go like the actual video rather than your own is the sweetest and most appreciative act, especially on TH-cam. You seem like a wonderful teacher.

A fun fact, the Germans rarely used the term "Blitzkrieg". It was just the modern interpretation of the Prussian doctrine of a quick war. They could not sustain a long, attritional war so their wars were always in a mindset of, "Mobilize, fight and win quickly, demobilize." This is also the mindset of the OKW in WW2 as if the war turns out longer than expected, they do not have the men nor material to continue a prolonged fight with the Western Powers with their access to many, many resources such as rubber, oil and rare alloys.
@Mohammad Ayman Bewegungskrieg means more Like moving war or movement war (Bewegung=movement, Krieg=war) Blitzkrieg means lightning [Blitz] war [Krieg] (word to Word Translation at least). As fast as lightning, a really quick battle basically. I'm a German so you can believe me on that one at least haha It's rarely called a Bewegungskrieg here (in school at least). It's true that the word Stellungskrieg (stationary war basically, because the fronts were barely moving at times) is used a Lot. But it's for WW1 only in the end. Here the quick Battles are usually referred to as Blitzkrieg or Just simple short offences/Fights/battles. Idk how it is for people who are actually doing History Things because i only have my knowledge from school lol The germans needed a way to quickly gain controll of certain areas because the German forces are usually outnumbered on longer Terms or when the foe is prepared. Also they would've needed many more ressources on the Battle Front which might have become a Problem in a Long Run. Supplies were Low in russia already but that's mainly because they weren't prepared for such a Winter.
That's a misconception.. After ww1 the miltary of all sides evaluated, developed and adopted certain doctrines (more or less when you look at france). As an example the tank doctrine.. First credit for the british, not even did they invented the tank, the basic understanding also was developed in Great Britain, that later became what we call "combined Forces"... But..was ignored. The germans (especially Guderian who was highly regarded) took that idea and shaped a new doctrine, based on the outcome of trench warfare and to avoid static long time fronts, so a moving war was in favor. That was not done because of the high amount of recourses needed especially for germany, it based on the idea that every long time trench war would soak up to much resources, no matter if you could occupy areas and resources or not, or what country you are. The so called "Blitzkrieg" is the product of (and it's just as simple as that) superior doctrine and choosing the right path of a combined forces warfare, on relation to the contenders and /or straight up inferior economy of them. The best example is mentioned in the video: France (false evaluation) and Poland (inferior economy to hold it's ground against german and russian forces) or Belgium (even if quality was the same/ nearly as the same, they lagged quantity). The effects of this new "Art of war", are seen and also teached worlwide (in case of Rommels understanding of war) today. In case of the actual technology, I will not take a quote on that, because it becomes a mess at some point. What I would like to highlight is that german high command, always took the possibility of a new Allied force against them into the equation and stated it severlal times, that if germany would face a newly reforged Allied enemy, would loose because of economical quantities. Hitler instead ignored this "little" fact and as he also commanded the attack on russia, several high command officers of the Wehrmacht, Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine secretely detested these Plan. Those incidents lead as an example Stauffenberg to the conclusion, that there is something wrong and even Rommel was way more than concerned (and we all know who gave the execution order, and who he directly criticised before). When you want to show what I mean with "blitzkrieg" misconceptions I have a little experiment for you. Sit down with a couple of friends, or for teachers in class with his/her pupils and give them a sheet of paper. Tell them they have 5 minutes to draw a chair and tell them to start. What you see now is, that some pupils will draw a pretty nice detailed chair, with screws and a nice seat and they will take a while... But.. Some efficient guys will just simply draw 3 lines, 2 vertical (one longer than the other) and a third one, horizontal, that begins at the top of the short line and ends in the middle of the long one. The outcome is the same, legs, a seat and a back rest and they will drew this in mere seconds. The idea of the chair is like the idea of combined forces and moving warfare, the real product is not. The detailed one is a sort of moving warfare in combined forces, the simple and stripped tobthe bones one is "Blitzkrieg". It just happend to be "Blitzkrieg" because it was the more efficient way, faster accomplished as expected.

France had plans to expand Maginot Line by building it in Belgium / through Belgium, but reason it didn't happen is relations between France and Belgium worsened and Belgium pursued being perceived as neutral nation. This ended up badly
Thank you for this comment. I've been waiting for someone who actually knows about this a little. As far as I can remember the Maginot line was designed to go through Belgium, but as a mobilizable form of defense. It was not designed like the French-German part, like a hard border.
@@leonweise3765 But that means that someone screwed up big anyway. Relations worsened because of something i bet. And so the line was a mistake. A great project that doesnt reach a finish line is as great as no project.
The Belgians actually had some very strong fortifications of their own on their border with Germany. With those in place and the Ardennes seemingly impassable, the Maginot lines' left flank on paper did not look that exposed. Of course history shows that those forts could actually be captured (in spectacular fashion) and that large formations could traverse the Ardennes.
It's interesting to hear that perspective on Chamberlain, he is certainly judged by history through the perspective of hindsight... As a Brit I would point out that Chamberlain's failures continue to have an impact on Prime Ministers of the UK to this day... Thatcher famously said on more than one occasion "I'm not in the buisness of appeasement" and followed that mantra throughout much of her administration (particularly the Falklands). Tony Blair certainly played on those 'anti-appeasement' ideals during the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan (and destroyed his reputation in the process)… Theresa May had been accused many times by her enemies of being an 'appeaser' during Brexit negotiations... For a British PM, being called an appeaser is the ultimate insult.

One time when I took a beginner level Japanese language course, the professor (who's a Japanese lady) told us a story about an experience she had when she was in college. One of her classes had Chinese and Korean students in it and she felt uncomfortable NOT because of prejudice but because she was a Japanese person in a room full of Chinese and Korean students. This was also a Japanese history course which made the atmosphere all the more distressing. She herself knew about the Rape of Nanking and "comfort women" beforehand. My professor simply got up, went to the front of the class, and apologized for what Japan did. Now, this was upsetting because she felt it was her duty to apologize for something she had nothing to do with. She wasn't even born yet at the time it all happened. The actions of the Japanese military and the approval of it from people who thought it justified had made it that the following generations would feel compelled to take responsibility in order to work with others, especially when those they want to work with are people no one can blame for feeling apprehensive.
To this day it's still extremely controversial to discuss Nanking in Japan. If I remember correctly in 1995 the Japanese Prime Minister wrote a scroll that expressed remorse for Nanking, but the Senate/House of Deputies tried to force a motion to change the wording to make it vage enough so that it could be interpreted as simply a deep reflection of Japanese military decisions during the war, instead of an outright apology for the war crimes that Japan committed during the war but especially during the Rape of Nanking
Regardless of who won the battle of Britain Hitler would still not have the capabilities to successfully sea loin Britain the decision to pull the German Air force back to protect the mainland was a smart one in the long run even if he didn't win
@@helloj1680 Yeah it easy to claim that if Hitler just had knocked out the RAF that they would have won the war. But reality is not that clear cut. To actually stage a invasion of UK would be a huge undertaking. And the German Navy was not really up to the task. UK and USA by far had the biggest navies in the world at the time. Even if Japan, the world 3rd largest navy at the time, would aid Germany it would not have been enough vs UK alone. And is not really like Japan even could afford to send a large fleet to the English channel help Germany.
@@wholesome1844crucifier That is true. In fact they did not expect to knock out even France that easily. The question is if knocking out the RAF would really have meant that UK where willing to sue for peace. I am doubtful. I think that the targeting of civilians actually was a more sound idea even if that did not work out ether. But it is tricky to try to win by making the populous want to give up. In general, if you committed to a fight you tend to be commit for the long run. All sides during WWII has to suffer a lot and it took a heck of a lot for the Axis to give up even when it was clear they had no chance of winning.
I remember watching an episode of "Doc Martin" and as part of a test to determine the mental state of an elderly patient, he asked her "when did WW2 start?". Her answer was brilliant - "1919". Having learned about ww2 all throughout school, I had a lot of this info ingrained into my head, but it’s so easy to get lost in the political talk and many different names and locations. Marxists differentiate between anti-militarism and anti-violence. Very few Marxists are anti-violent but the overwhelming majority are anti-militarist. Anti-militarism refers to opposition to wars under capitalist systems which are seen as inherently imperialist and only in the bourgeois favour. While violence is seen as a legitimate tool in the arsenal available to us in fighting capitalism. Hope this helps!
@@comradeotaku Isn't it ironic how you differentiate between types of violence but usually after communist revolutions, the most ruthless and power hungry types win like Stalin, Mao, Kim Ir Sen, etc. You're against bourgeois but those dictators weren't all that different from what you seem to hate.
@@wlink639 That is often the case. Though part of this also has to do with the amount of pressure these countries where under during and after the revolutions. It is hard to get nice leaders in a climate where if you are not the most ruthless bastard of all the bastards you will be replaced. Though I do not think using violence to overthrow the system helps in this regard. Since that prime you leaders for using ruthless methods.
Yes but that was likely due to his own agenda to put himself in power. Once he had that power he likely saw that he could keep going up the chain so to speak. I mean he wanted to overthrow the monarchy because he genuinely believed that he was the only one who could lead his nation back to greatness. Once he held that position he likely realised that he was always taking orders from someone. So he tried to establish power so that he could make his own destiny for his people without being held back by other powers. Thus expanding his civil conflict out into the world at large. It’s a genuinely relatable experience for many an angst fueled teen. But that does not excuse the lengths he went to keep and expand his power.
Hi! I would also like to mention, that Munich Deal is for us Czechs known as "Betrayal from west". We still feel sad about that event. Another thing is, that adding Czechoslovakia to Germany was huge profit for Germans. Czechslovakia had advanced military, industry and skills - which surely helped Hitler with war - he used a lot of our modern tanks etc. We were also ready for fight, we had great defence lines with border of Germany..... but we were sold and than everyone payed the price. This vid didnt mention one important moment. In the begining of war Japan tried to invade Mongolia which was suppported by Soviet Union. Didn't end well and that experience was one of the reason for them to not open the eastern front for Germany later with their invasion of Soviet Union which allowed Stalin to move more troops from the eastern part of the country to the west.

Your videos are amazing and I absolutely love them! Just one side-note (obviously from a Pole ahahah). Poland existed before being incorporated into the three powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary and Russia on 1772, 1793 and 1795, the Three Partitions of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, after which we disappear from the map for 123 years.) Poland's 'official' beginning is marked by the year 966, the christianization of Poland by our first Duke, and first ruler of Poland.
Apples and oranges. Hitler and Mussolini were saying that they would fix everything through invasion, not through demilitirization in foreign countries to spend more at home calm the fuck down
14:35 - 15:30 - Don't know much about polish/german relations, but there were 0 things that historically were Russia's. There was Poland and Lithuania, then Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth, then we were occupied by Russians, Prussians and Austrians from all the sides, numerous independce fights during Napoleonic wars and after, and short lived independence after WWI. What the deal actually entailed was - a way to take back the land that never belonged to Russia without anyone paying much attention. Please refresh your knowledge on this - telling easter block how we are "historically russian" is about as annoying as telling American "you're just a british colony" :)
Few inaccuracies in both the video and the commentary; reason is that most of older history book especially those used in schools are outdated. Maginot line did extend to the coast; northern part was a combination of smaller fortifications and a movable line in the form of high concentration of non-mechanized troops and big heavy modern tank units meant to move into Belgium or south depending where the invasion will occur. Areas around the Ardenne where fortified as part of the Maginot Line; problem is the very high tech French fortresses was supposed to be used together with conventional army units to be stoppable force and not act as single solution defense force as popular believed. Building was behind schedule but there were still lots of heavy fortresses that took Germans weeks to neutralise a single fortress complex; the only one to fall during the Battle of France. Also they together with supporting troops were suppose to delay any attack for 30 days and not be impregnable as popularly believed. So when the main units were drawn into Belgium and the weaker units made up largely of senior part time reserves that was not well trained was left north of Sedan to stop the fully mechanized German units (troops and tanks together moving fast as a unit) could push through after the Luftwaffe bomb the crap out of them since Allies air forces where all deployed to Belgium. Even together with all against them the French units held of the German Panzer 1 and 2 divisions for couple of days causing heavy losses against for Panzer 1. Also French did advance technologically wise, problem was military doctrine was still stuck in WW1 mode so infantry was not mechanised and heavy tank units had non infantry and slow. But where they faced the Germans head on they were the superior force. The Manstein plan could have easily stopped by the French on various occasions; by diverting air forces to Sedan or by moving in reinforcements when the Germans were held back at the Muze or by moving the larger units from the south up north instead keeping them stationed to protect the roads south. Basically the fall of France can be blamed on the poor French command structure, and lack of central command and specifically on General Huntzinger who made poor decision on poor decision and lied about the situation at Sedan to not make himself look bad.
I was writing a similar comment yesterday. Fortunately I will not have to. But as a little tag for those who would blame the fall of France on the intransitance (a real word?) of the Belgians is that every cynical fear of the Belgians was basically correct: 1. The Belgians did not expect the Allies to defend Belgium wholesale. The Allies, for their part, planned to forfeit about half of Belgium (including all of Liege and Antwerp) so they could mount a stalemate hold within Belgium. 2 .The Belgians expected the Allies to allow the Belgian military arms to sacrifice themselves to buy the Allies time. The Allies did and planned to do just this. 3. Inviting the Allies in would invite the Axis in and vice versa. Any way you slice it, Belgium would be effectively fully occupied. TLDR: The entire grand strategy of the defense of France was "Lets try our best to have the war entirely in Belgium at the expense of the Belgians." The Belgians expected this, and were therefore not exactly champing at the bit to volunteer to be acceptable losses.

how about what war can do to technology. WW2 started with propeller driven Bi-planes and ended with Jet-planes in a span of 5 years. that's friggin insane, that would be the equivalent of having the first computer ever put into service and 5 years later have the first octa-core.
The point about the Maginot line. it was intened to reach the coast, but the Low Countries objected as they felt it was being abandoned by France. There was another defensive line built in that section, but far less extensive nor sophisticated On Norway.... the entire campaign was planned by Churchill.
Great addition to the video! Extremely positively surprised for a 'reaction' video! Sidenote: a hat! A teacher with a hat! I thought you were archenemies
My history teacher in secondary school was the greatest influence on my academic life. Fostered a real love of learning, critical thinking and a willingness to delve into a differing perspective to this day. Weird to think that Mr Terry is my age, and gives me the same view, from 4000 miles away. A pleasure though. Odd side comment; I never forgot the moment my old teacher (Mr Kew, who I had the pleasure of buying a pint for recently) brought a piece of the Berlin Wall out from his desk. Stunned moment in the class - the man was there, welding a sledgehammer.
18:13 French didn't build Maginot to the sea, it was becouse Belgium-French border was a vast "flat" (well not flat, earth is round) field so fortification wasn't effective there at all, But they stationed there their best troops and hoped that Belgium will give them access to their borders so French can go and help Belgs, but Leopold came and say "Nope we are going neutrality, f*ck you all" (and maybe Dutch) to rever Maas (if I'm not mistaken this river called like that) and hold Germans there, but there's Ardennes where French thought that Ardennes wa this place where tanks literally can't pass there (because their WW1 flashbacks where tanks was slow and can't go through forest and mountains/hills or can but is will VERY slow, W. Churchill told French high cammand about Ardennes but they said "every thing is fine".
I would like to point out the Maginot line's weaknesses were not without cause. first, France assumed Belgium and the Netherlands would stand up to german aggression and have their own defenses the french army could assist with. this meant spending extra money extending the line was unneeded. second, where the line ended was the Arden Forest, and going off WW1 knowledge, it was nearly impassible, a natural defensive line. When Belgium decided not to defend itself as france expected, france did a rush expansion that wasnt quite completed before WW2. Additionally, german tanks (the one thing the french did not expect) rushed straight through the Arden (right where france had believed impassible terrain to exist). all in all, the blunders france committed in preparing for the next war as far as the prebuilt defenses go, are forgivable when you look at their ideas and politics at the time.
18:15 the belgians(andaybe the Netherlands I forget) had an alliance with France that would allow them to continue the Maginot line through Belgium along the German border. Belgium cancelled that alliance as France was set to continue the line and ruined those plans. And France, not wanting to anger or worsen relations, did not continue the line along the Belgian border, as well as the fact that they didn't think Germany would pull the same trick twice. They were also pretty broke then too so the line was economically unsustainable to continue.
The reason Poland didn't exist prior to WWI is that Germany Russian and Austria invaded and split the Polish commonwealth between them. And in 1934 Poland was invaded by soviets(Russa), but they stopped and pushed back the Russian winning the war. A good not is the allies which Polish fought alongside with during WWI. Decided not to help out, so in the end Poland pushed back the Soviets and singed a Peace treaty. Also, Polish leadership earned the allies to attack Hitler before he was ready for war.... they didnt listen. As they were the 4th major power in WWII, the reward for fighting with the allies, the Polish people were betrayed and literally sold out to be occupied by the Soviets after the war. And as a fun fact, the Polish resistance dwarfed any other during WWII, and the last of the soldiers that resisted the soviet occupation died in 1973.

He did it in secret...
That's why the Panzerkampfwagen I and II were officially developed as agricultural tractors. And with these tractors they rolled to Poland....
Also why the He-111 and Fw-200 were airliners before they were bombers.
Hitler prepped in secret. Even the famous enigma. It was a private group which got bought put the moment germans wanted it and all the enigma encryption machinrs they could find were being bought from their owners.
So It was so secret that Uboats were Underwater tour ship until it started to sink ships
Or in the case of the eastern front humans.
@Mohammad Ayman They did, but Blitzkrieg was a western idea
@Mohammad Ayman Bewegungskrieg means more Like moving war or movement war (Bewegung=movement, Krieg=war)
Blitzkrieg means lightning [Blitz] war [Krieg] (word to Word Translation at least). As fast as lightning, a really quick battle basically. I'm a German so you can believe me on that one at least haha
It's rarely called a Bewegungskrieg here (in school at least). It's true that the word Stellungskrieg (stationary war basically, because the fronts were barely moving at times) is used a Lot. But it's for WW1 only in the end. Here the quick Battles are usually referred to as Blitzkrieg or Just simple short offences/Fights/battles. Idk how it is for people who are actually doing History Things because i only have my knowledge from school lol
The germans needed a way to quickly gain controll of certain areas because the German forces are usually outnumbered on longer Terms or when the foe is prepared. Also they would've needed many more ressources on the Battle Front which might have become a Problem in a Long Run. Supplies were Low in russia already but that's mainly because they weren't prepared for such a Winter.
@Mohammad Ayman you're Welcome. Just Hope that Made Sense though. It's almost 1am and i'm too tired to speak properly 🙌

Not exactly everyone is like your Japanese teacher. You won’t believe what arguments I had to go through.

@@Cythil Hitler's plan was never to invade the UK, but to get them to pull out of the war

Marxists differentiate between anti-militarism and anti-violence. Very few Marxists are anti-violent but the overwhelming majority are anti-militarist.

Didn't end well and that experience was one of the reason for them to not open the eastern front for Germany later with their invasion of Soviet Union which allowed Stalin to move more troops from the eastern part of the country to the west.
The Maginot line wasn't extended because Belgium refused to let France extend it into Belgium which was where building had originally been intended
I heard Belguim was going to build defenses that linked up, but then budget cuts..
never heard that , we had our own set of defences around the german border but the main stronghold was taken within hours by german paratroopers , belgian command didnt think of placing any AA battery on the fort nor did they think that a paratrooper assault could be a thing
@@athomicritics Diplomat bois effed up. So french bois build a piece of fence. So german bois effed everyone up.

Umm from my understanding you cannot be disappointed after death
faught and failed would be more appropriate.

there's gonna be another video called "teacher of history teacher reacts about the teacher he taught reacts to Oversimplifed"
Oh god no

If I was in his class, I'd probably get 100 - 99.% on every test or assignment. I love history and Oversimplified I watched every video start to finish.
The maginot line was not extended all the way to the coast because where it ends it was supposed to line up with belgian fortifications which was planned but at that time not made
Hey, I just wanted to say that I absolutely love your channel. I discovered it with the epic rap battle reaction videos and have been hooked since. I love that you give an extra bit of information on top of the already great over-simplified series. You clearly have a passion for History, your students are very lucky to have you as their teacher!
About Maginot Line, the only plan to extend it was with belgium line, but they didn't build it.
"I can fix everything!" No w where have I heard that in modern times......
*uh oh*
Well shi-
Every single us president ever lol correlation doesn’t equal causation
Hold up-
Apples and oranges. Hitler and Mussolini were saying that they would fix everything through invasion, not through demilitirization in foreign countries to spend more at home calm the fuck down
In about an hour, I have learned 1000X more from Oversimplified videos that I ever learned in schooling :)
Im just here to see how accurate they are.
But as a little tag for those who would blame the fall of France on the intransitance (a real word?) of the Belgians is that every cynical fear of the Belgians was basically correct:
HvR ur both dirty little nerds
It's *oversimplified*
@Mr.TerryHistory It's so nice to see people who actually react to the videos and not just sit there and do nothing and just stay silent like it's not even worth it then. But you commentate and you actually say some interesting stuff while reacting good job man. Keep up the good work
If Chamberlin day was released i would celebrate that and my birthday lol
Awesome video and awesome idea of having a History teacher reviewing these videos. I had already seen this video and it really helped me to understand better this topics the teacher comments/insights. I hope that Mr. Terry keeps doing this type of videos. Kudos!
His laugh when he saw Mussolini going bald HAHHAHAHAH
how about what war can do to technology. WW2 started with propeller driven Bi-planes and ended with Jet-planes in a span of 5 years. that's friggin insane, that would be the equivalent of having the first computer ever put into service and 5 years later have the first octa-core.
*rocket*
The point about the Maginot line.
it was intened to reach the coast, but the Low Countries objected as they felt it was being abandoned by France.
There was another defensive line built in that section, but far less extensive nor sophisticated
On Norway.... the entire campaign was planned by Churchill.

In regards to the Maginot line, I think Belgium was supposed to fortify their border as well and not continue the line to the channel.
Congrats For 50k subs! Keep It Up and honestly 50k is nothing since you deserve 1 MILLION...Truly
Benito’s past self:”you have become the very thing you swore to destroy”
The reason I watched oversimplified is because my history teacher showed it in class.
In 5th grade when we would do history, my teacher always showed us Oversimplified and we liked watching Oversimplified cuz he was funny
Lucky
I wish there was like a French dub or smth cuz then my teachers woulda prolly used these videos
This is why I love history class, you have earned a subscription.
16:37 the rest was supposed to be built by Belgium bu right before the war started Belgium decided not to build it
they left the french alliance early thirties so the french should have built it to the channel
@@kappsa5365 you dont know weather the war will start in an hour or a year
I would like to point out the Maginot line's weaknesses were not without cause. first, France assumed Belgium and the Netherlands would stand up to german aggression and have their own defenses the french army could assist with. this meant spending extra money extending the line was unneeded. second, where the line ended was the Arden Forest, and going off WW1 knowledge, it was nearly impassible, a natural defensive line.
Honestly the best reaction video, with good inputs, not "omg!" and "hahahahaha" stuff
Um, the 4th major power was probably china... (in terms of allies)
