He was avoiding Austrian military service specifically not military service in general. He wanted to serve in the german army.

@@YukoValis I was under the impression that Hitler attempted to join the Austrian military, but they turned him down. This then led him to join the German military, which had looser requirements for admission.

@@MrTerry hmm. I honestly don't know. But I would think he wouldn't want to join the Austrian military due to being against his father, among other reasons.

      @@MrTerry No, he didn't.
When WW1 started, Hitler was in Munich at the time. Which Hitler didn't mind since he had a great love for Bavaria, and preferred serving in the German Army.
He went to the conscription place in Bavaria, and for some reason they either didn't check his nationality, or Hitler convinced them to have him join the German rather than Austrian Army.
Hitler himself said the latter was the case in his "Mein Kampf", but like much, the veracity is questionable.
My source is the first of the recent two-part biography of Hitler by Volker Ullrich.

Re: Military service, it was NOT getting drafted to fight in the multi-cultural Austro_Hungarian Army. He petitioned to join the Bavarian Army (which was separate at the time). He was part of the first wave of volunteers who were scooped up as war start (some had been "deferred" from service, others were just swept up). They were given very basic training and sent to hold the line when the offensive stalled at the Marne. The German's refer to this incident as the "Slaughter of Innocents" (the author of All Quiet on the Western Front had a quite similar experience).
Max Hasting's "The Mask of Command" covers the whole thing in more detail.
P.S. My Grandfather would always refer to Hitler as "Herr Schikelgrubber" when he felt the need to mention him in letters home from the Navy. I guess it was a round-about way of calling him a bastard.

So here is my theory. Would it be accurate to think that WW2 wouldn't have taken place without WW1? Sure Italy would still have Mussolini, but Hitler seems to have come to power specifically because of the after effects of WW1.
With that thought in mind, and while I know this wasn't the only reason WW1 happened, do you think the assassination of archduke Ferdinand technically caused both world wars?

    • @MrTerry
      @MrTerry  5 ปีที่แล้ว +30

Technically speaking, there wouldn't be a second war without a first war. However, the causes of WW2 were directly caused by the effects of WW1. If the terms of the Treaty of Versailles were different, and the handling of the end of WW1 in general were different, I think you would have seen a very different post-WW1 era. Would WW1 have been the War to End All Wars though? I doubt it.
The Assassination was the spark to a conflict that was likely bound to happen. The nations of Europe were ready for war (see the acronym MAIN - Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, Nationalism). It almost seem inevitable.

One thing about Mussolini is that he rose to power specifically because the Italians were unhappy with what they got, they were hoping to get a lot of the Dalmatian coast but hardly gained anything, Mussolini used this among other things to influence them.

Per wikipedia, “Hitler received the final part of his father’s estate in May 1913 and moved to Munich, Germany. When he was conscripted into the Austro-Hungarian Army, he journeyed to Salzburg in Feb 1914 for medical assessment. After he was deemed unfit for service, he returned to Munich. In August 1914, he voluntarily enlisted in the Bavarian Army. According to a 1924 report by Bavarian authorities, allowing Hitler to serve was almost certainly an administrative error, since as an Austrian citizen, he should have been returned to Austria.” Hitler later claimed he did not wish to serve Habsburg Empire because of the mix of races in its army and belief that the collapse of Austria-Hungary was imminent.

      Not quite.
He avoided the Austrian Draft already 1909, and he didn't specifically move to Germany to avoid it. Maybe it played a little part, but that wasn't a main reason.
But otherwise I agree with you, nothing suggest he avoided the war. In fact, everything not suggests, but almost outright proves he was enthusiastic about it.
