  • Hey Everyone, Changing the Impeller in my 2011 90 Yamaha. Of course check for wear on the impeller cup and the base plate. If it has big scrapes replace them. It is a simple procedure but can be a little frustrating re installing for an amateur. Hope this helps. Josh

Good video - very helpful in replacing my impeller.
Just a couple of lessons learned:
1.a note where the bolts come out when removing the lower unit. There are two different sizes
    1. It is helpful to clean the drive shaft before pulling the impeller. Also used some dish soap to help it slide up.
    2. My impeller was very tight going on. Used a piece of wood and small rubber mallet to help move it along.
    3. Be careful not to score the shaft with screwdriver. As soon as I got the impeller moving I switched to a plastic tool that is designed for removing interior parts.
    4. Used dish soap to help the impeller slide into the cup. Very helpful suggestion someone else made.
    5. When putting the unit back together make sure you get the spline for the shifter into it’s shaft (hole). There is enough play in the upper piece that the unit will go together with the shifter not properly engaged

Would be a good idea to mark the trip tab position

The grease is a good idea for first start and will be flushed out in no time and won't hurt the rubber impeller. Also a good indicator is when motor at idle and flow out of pisser is slow change impeller.

Don’t use marine grease on the impeller. It will cause the impeller to break down over time. Use Dawn Ultra dish soap.

I was taught that way as well, but use vaseline instead. That's the same bottom end as the two stroke 90, old saying, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Great video. Replaced everything like you did to the letter, water flowing great, but prop will not engage when put into gear (water hose in the driveway ... for what that's worth). Did I miss a step? Quite sure the splines in the shaft lined up or the lower unit would not have bolted back up would it? Thanks

Hey Joe! 100% you missed the splines on the shift shaft when putting it on. It’s a pain but yank it off and move it to neutral (pliers), you’ll feel the detent and spin the prop free. They are a PITA to throw back on nice.

I'm having troubles getting the outdrive to go into the upper part of the motor. I get to within 3/8" of going together and it won't go any further

Be sure the water tube is lining up . Some lube on it helps sometimes. Also make sure splines are clean.

I lubed the water tube and shifter splines as well, not sure why it won't go past 3/8" together

    Is this a wear item?

    • @Schneids15
      @Schneids15  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

That’s correct. They recommend changing them every 100 hours or yearly. Many go for years without changing.
They are supposed to stay nice and springy and should spring fairly straight if the impeller housing was pulled off. Eventually they get hard after use and take shape of the cup like the one i pulled out and they will either shred and clog the water passages and cause an overheat or can just become so taken to shape that under high speeds they cause an overheat. Most of the time they shred and the motor gets a severe overheat. That is why you change them regular to prevent it👍🏻
