      +Vlad Bayard I agree. They had a mixture of some amazing actors, scenery, music, but there was also some awful dialogue or actors that couldn't pull it off. I didn't care for Knightly or the Picts (or the actors that played the father/son Picts.) It was a good movie, but it could have been so much better.

    • @Efactor87
      @Efactor87 9 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      +bob tony I enjoyed the movie and didn't mind the sub-par acting at some points, but the reason I couldn't appreciate it as much as I wanted to was because it lacked more scenes like this. This movies themes are the longing for home and misplaced identities in a fading empire, yet the movie jumps around from scene to scene so much, it never gave the audience enough time to appreciate their journey. This take on King Arthur would have made a much better trilogy. More time could have been spent developing these characters and showing the audience the conflicts and struggles of that age.

    • @Farscryer0

      +bob tony Because this deserved either a trilogy or a 10-part mini series on HBO. To this day, the only character that truly *was* a fleshed out character was Bors.
      And while he is hilarious, I wish I could've gotten to know each of the other knights and characters with equal screen time. Would've made their various sacrifices much more poignant.

    This movie (especially the director's cut) is way better than people give it credit for. Arthur and the companionship he shares with his knights is by far the best part. Just look at this scene and how much you learn about each of the knights just by watching their expressions upon hearing a song from their homelands.
    I just wish they'd been given more screentime individually.

      yeah, this in my opinion is the best cast of characters/actors ever assembled...since at the time, the only one really known (here in the US anyway) was Keira Knightly. so it was like they were unknowns but we all know now that they are the best in the biz. but the movie had to be big, so the character development had to be compromised. but it is in my top 2 fav;s (neck-in-neck with Last of the Mohicans).

There is no doubt in my mind that warriors and people from even 1000s of years ago, could have heard this and felt the same longing that we do today. The human condition is one that connects those from our past, with those we cannot even imagine in the future.

      Best King Arthur movie is Excalibur. See King Arthur is a myth and legend. It's supposed to be fantastical.
      I like the idea that what if we try to make a movie on a realistic version of him which might have inspired the legend but it just wasn't that impactful in terms of cinema. The movie feels drab at times.

    • @Aldiraider
      @Aldiraider ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gabbar51ngh well King Arthur was a Legend. But it has some real roots like: The Anglo-Saxon-War, The Romans leaving britian, The Picts as enemies of the romans, the Battle on BadonHill (Ambrosius Aurelianus). and more.
      Personally i´d like to see an historical aproach on King Arthur, without all the Fantasytales, wich were added in the end of middle-age. You see the problem is that some legends were just written down badly in history so, we today can just interprete if it was real or not. The same happened with Beowulf, or Nibelungen-saga.
      There are some reasons why i dont like Excalibur (Movie) it´s fantasy + even more fantasy. These armors are the strangest things i have ever seen. It´s so far away from the real early middle-age that the armors feel (look) like from a modern video-game. Also i didnt have nostalgia for that movie and watched it the first time 2 years ago. And viewing all the other movies of King-Arthur before, it felt strange for me.
      Funny thing is: that im born in 1995 and totaly was into all middle-age movies-comics and so on (like PrinceValiant comics i totally liked the design of KingArthur and Camelot even if it was also completely fantasy) And if someone showed me "Excalibur" when i was a kid i would have even liked it.

    • @gabbar51ngh
      @gabbar51ngh ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Aldiraider That whole idea that King Arthur was some Roman military leader is Samartian hypothesis. There's no way to tell if that's accurate or know what even happened at that time. Some Characters like Lancelot were added by French and not originally part of story. There's similarly conflicting problems with Merlin's origins. So this movie is as much fictional as a fantastical one and it strays away from what's already established about this legendary King to us. That's what I am trying to say. Plus villains in the movie acted so dumb from time to time. They didn't really looked that challenging.
      Entire story is such a mixture of several legends from various places that trying to retrofit it all in one historical event wouldn't really work. I like the attempt of the movie but Merlin as some leader of picts? Guinevere belonging to them? Lancelot dying so early on?
      If director was going that route, I just believe they could have taken more liberty in making a more impactful movie. Merlin could have been shown as inventor, philosopher or science enthusiast of that time hence why he was considered a "dark wizard" to some. As for Guinevere, they could have shown her as daughter of a tribe leader or a Warlord if they couldn't go full fledged princess route. King Arthur marries her inorder to secure an army to win? As for Excalibur, it could be just a sword which had been incredibly lucky and gifted by religious order to him after he saved them. It has no magical properties but Arthur believes it has? And Arthur and his nights routinely outsmart larger forces by using tricks, traps and help of Merlin. They don't need to add supernatural but if they're going the non fantastical route then so much could have been done while still keeping elements of the actual King Arthur stories. The movie completely ignored that.
      Excalibur movie also shows how these characters weren't so moral or idealistic which is often omitted. This King Arthur movie doesn't separate itself from other theatrical versions and tries to paint a very romanticized picture.

    Besides the power and grace of the song, This is one of the best scenes in the movie.... here is why.
    These men for who life is war 15 years fighting just to survive to go home. The knights always seem at the tip of readiness, tense, never at ease.
    Then vanora starts to sings and (to the all actors credit) you can see in there faces just for a moment the pressure subsides and they get the barest glimpse of peacefulness on there faces and then the very second she stops singing they snap back to the ready. Yes its a party, they think there freedom is mere moments away but still you can almost feel the tension they carry.
    Vanora's gift isn't just the song or her voice. She soothes these weary and harden men with nothing more then her heartfelt song.
    Edit: Thank you all for the likes and comments, really nice of you all. Be well and stay safe.

    Agree with the other comments ....just wish this could have been issued (in a full version ....the "Arthur !" interruption is so raw) . The deep bass drone on this is gorgeous : you don't get that on the many youTube vids of the original song plus the "Sorrow" piece that seems to bridge this scene.....

    Land of bear and
    Land of eagle
    Land that gave us birth and blessing
    Land that pulled us ever homewards
    We will go home across the mountains
    We will go home, we will go home
    We will go home, across the mountains
    We will go home, we will go home
    We will go home, singing our song
    Hear our singing,
    Hear our longing
    We will go home across the mountains
    We will go home, we will go home
    We will go home, across the mountains
    We will go home, we will go home
    We will go home, we will go - home.

    Whenever I hear this I think of the Scottish Highlanders who joined the British army after the clearances just so they could survive. On the far side of the Empire fighting and dying for a cause not their own - longing for their clansmen, longing for the glens, longing for home.

    What I loved best about this movie was the camaraderie and chemistry the Knights created with one another. As someone who has fought and served in a combat unit, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger bond between men than that of those who have shared combat with one another. The movie presented this very well.

    Serving overseas, a lot of times, it feels as if we are the outcasts, the rebels, the exiled, I think thats why such a strong brotherhood is created, we fight and defend for a home we have to be away from for many years. We are honored to serve, but somedays, we are humbled that at the end of our service, we will go home...

The English are Saxons,normans and other invading tribes who eventually pushed the Britons to what is now Wales,Cornwall and Brittany the English are immigrants! The word for England in Welsh is "Lloegr" which means "lost land"
