This video shows the restoration process behind a rare Shaftesbury RT Ribbon Microphone (made in England in the 1960's) and National WM-706 Ribbon Microphone (made in Japan in the 1960's). It's likely that I won't have another Shaftesbury ribbon on my bench ever again, and the National ribbon has a unique motor that makes for a bright sounding ribbon. I sell microphones like these every week on...

The King of Kick Drum Microphones: AKG D36
I used sm57's as overheads in my self-titled debut album in 2016. No tom mics. It was an interesting recording session, and I was quite happy with the results.
Love the 4038 sound. I only have one of those right now but I love the coles ribbon sound. I've used the 4050 too and loved the brighter sound of that mic as well. <3
Everybody works in a different way but i love 414s on overheads (prefereable b-uls). For jazz i like the oktava mk012 with akg c451 as spots.
it's the 4038 for me, I place a pait at 5 feet above the kit
Love your videos dawg, don’t forget that panning is inverted for the viewer :)
Ok more importantly, what are you recording through?
Loved the 57s!
414 and sm57 are both awesome and would work good together. 4048 interestingly was my least favourite
Thanks for that! Love both ribbons in the highs. The low lows of the 414 is amazing. Liebe Grüsse Benno
m160s are pretty well balanced for the whole kit, but if you want to blend in any kick, snare, or other close mics, I think something a little brighter like the 414s provide you with more control. Coles were expectedly brooding. Surprised by the amount of difference in the transients across the board. 57s sounded awful to me.
0:20 Beyer M160 0:31 STC 4038 0:42 AKG C60 0:53 AKG 414 EB 1:04 Shure SM57
I can see why 414s are a popular overhead mic. To me they were well balanced with highs and lows. The other mics each have their own charm, so there’s no wrong answer really.
thanks for a short no BS video!
I guess it takes all kinds.
@@mikepecchio-gk1bc I'm mostly tired of 25 minute TH-cam videos that have 30 seconds (if that) of content.
Please make longer videos!
Will do my best! I’m pretty busy repairing microphones these days haha, but glad to know longer videos are wanted!
Wonderful...!
I like them all for different reasons. My two favorite are the M160's and the C60's.
It’s the M160s for me.
Both AKG mics were so good. But also the 57s are such a vibe.
Gotta love the 57s.
Years ago, I read Ed Sullivan's show used 77s to mike guitar amps. The ribbons had to be routinely replaced because they'd get stretched. RCA had a repair service for doing so. They re-ribboned my 74B and recharged the magnets as well in the 60s for a reasonable fee ($30?).
Well placed mics
do you know of a way to tighten the sliver washer part of the clip? the weight of the mic drops to angle of the clip on mine.
Love it! 👏🏼
Nice music ❤
Probably the nail in the coffin for me for that M88. Seemed a little muffled even for a dynamic.
Ha this was cool!
All you guys should start a band,,,🤔, and thankyou for the tasty vintage treat!!
Thanks for this video , I have a melodium 42b and I’m wondering what eq settings I should use for vocals ? Thanks
which acoustic guitar is this? that gibson sounds beautiful
It’s a 1957 Gibson LG-3! Thanks!
Ribbon definitely sounds better, also RCA BK5 was used on In Utero
That Acoustic is the real winner!
That 360 really does sound ridiculous.
just gorgeous on my 0.62 scale Karlson/B102 topped with PRV compression driver on a 9 inch long 3D printed "K-tube"
that acoustic guitar part was beautiful
I use a lot of 1960s-1980s mics in my home studio. AKG c28a &b, c60, Shure UniDyne and SM57.
I love the darkness of the SK-46s, but damn those 160s sound sweet!
That windscreen filtering really makes a difference, how cool! They all sounded great/useable.
This might just have convinced me to use my BK1a for something other than a talkback mic. Although I did throw it on snare when I first got it....definitely worked!
M260s closely followed by the M160
I thought the varacoustic sounded better on the guitar. The 77 was a little brighter. I have the former and might just geek the high end a little to get closer to the 77.
Great video.
just go with 2 new Shure SM-57's and call it a day bro! :)
I'd like to hear that for reference, you may be right
LOVED the RCAs
M160s for me! Cool selections though
m260
Loved the sound of the D19's, although it's a very specific thing. Beyer 160s for a more versatile sound, if that makes sense.
260’s we’re pretty sweet too
Nice, again the 160’s.
For me, the first two were close, but my order of preferene is 1) M260 2) M160 3) D19 4) SK-46. The M260 is just that bit smoother and natural than the M160, though in a mix, it's very possible the M160s would be preferable. I guess better to have the exteneded bright high-end, and roll it back, than try to boost to recover / artificially create it.
Love this series! Best mic a/b testing I've found. So helpful for hearing the differences in character between mics.
Thanks for saying that!
