Love the 4038 sound. I only have one of those right now but I love the coles ribbon sound. I've used the 4050 too and loved the brighter sound of that mic as well.

I used sm57's as overheads in my self-titled debut album in 2016. No tom mics. It was an interesting recording session, and I was quite happy with the results.

Love your videos dawg, don’t forget that panning is inverted for the viewer :)

I can see why 414s are a popular overhead mic. To me they were well balanced with highs and lows. The other mics each have their own charm, so there’s no wrong answer really.

@@mikepecchio-gk1bc I'm mostly tired of 25 minute TH-cam videos that have 30 seconds (if that) of content.

Everybody works in a different way but i love 414s on overheads (prefereable b-uls). For jazz i like the oktava mk012 with akg c451 as spots.

Will do my best! I’m pretty busy repairing microphones these days haha, but glad to know longer videos are wanted!

m160s are pretty well balanced for the whole kit, but if you want to blend in any kick, snare, or other close mics, I think something a little brighter like the 414s provide you with more control. Coles were expectedly brooding. Surprised by the amount of difference in the transients across the board. 57s sounded awful to me.

Thanks for that! Love both ribbons in the highs. The low lows of the 414 is amazing. Liebe Grüsse Benno

it's the 4038 for me, I place a pait at 5 feet above the kit

Both AKG mics were so good. But also the 57s are such a vibe.

414 and sm57 are both awesome and would work good together. 4048 interestingly was my least favourite

Sm57 is really all you need but any of them would do. Use what youve got .
