Back to Basics | Jeep still offering real Jeeps!
Had an NC which was fun but loud. The lack of a liner for the top makes it hard to live with as daily driver. It was quieter with the top down vs up. Moved up to a BMW 128 convertible which is easier on my 60 y/o bones ands more comfortable. The Miata was great fun for awhile though.
Great comment. Thanks!
Why is it that when it comes to EV’s all people do is road trip, everyday? You have to get past the gas station mentality. The infrastructure is fine, and getting better in NC at least.
It is true lol, but NC is only one part of a barren world lol. Up here in the sticks there isn't great infrastructure yet. I agree, most only drive something like 30miles a day or less and plugging in at home is way more convenient, but people like my wife that has to still travel a couple times a month on a 4hr highway commute are pickled lol. Plug in hybrids in my opinion do the trick. In reality because most people don't drive more than the 30miles a day never put out any exhaust CO2 and still have the option to tow or go greater distances. Or just put a hemi in it and call it a day;) Thanks for commenting
Nice ride, I really like the red Tach on the A-Spec, but I think I would go with the NX. Seems more luxurious. Great review!
Agreed. Definitely a nice ride and one I would consider myself. Thanks for the comment and kind words
20:18 min.... I have a 12v power outlet in the trunk of my 2008 VW Rabbit.....still going strong after 17 years.
Great to know!
Anyone that thinks a rear-wheel drive is going to be even fractionally as good as an all-wheel drive has never driven on mountain roads in the winter time.
I've had enough rear wheel drive cars to know that this thing couldn't even begin to hold the candle against a WRX in real winter driving conditions.
Definitely. The point of the video is to try and help save RWD cars from going extinct. For most they are a more fun driving that they can get away with if careful and if they have good snow tires and have no reason to be scared from owning one. I love the WRX and is a better car for those in extreme conditions.
@Neutralreviews I love my WRX as well. But it just doesn't cut the mustard once you're used to driving a porsche.
@@Keith-e5f Ha! I bet lol. I just bought a mk8 Golf R manual and am enjoying the extra power. I got it at the last minute over the WRX. I still smile every time I see one because I almost bought one. Wish the still had the STI. Thanks for commenting:)
@Neutralreviews are those front wheel drive or all-wheel drive?
@@Keith-e5f AWD. And this new generation actually has the torque vectoring out of the new Audi RS3. In the rain or snow it can drift even in comfort and ESC on. That said it has been incredibly capable and stable in the snow. So far I really like it and am glad I got it.
Strictly talking fun, which one do you find more fun? This or Golf R?
In dry weather the Acura hands down! That said, I took my Golf in the snow and it was the opposite. That was extremely fun. The Type S feels like the CTR in that you feel more connected to the chassis like in a BRZ or Miata, but the 300HP FWD gets old quick when all you do is spin and push towards the ditch. The Golf is German luxury car numb but also German luxury car fast. The Golf in real life feels like a monster in straight line speed and cornering under power. Plus you can go sideways if you want in the Golf unlike the Acura. Both have fun exhaust unlike the muted Honda so that is a tie. I honestly think I'd be happy either way. Summer Type S, Winter R lol
Please tell more about the maintenance & factory warranty on drive train or bumper to bumper
Congrats on the golfR. I just picked up a 24 manual as well.
Nice! Congrats as well. You will love it.
Thank you for the review, Terrance! I appreciate you pointing out the 5000 pound feel on the highway! Those intangible stuff I wouldn't notice on a test drive (non-windy day). Cool Nikes!
Very welcome and thanks for the kind words. It is such a great car.
Please speak with an American accent next time. TIA.
It's a big country do you have any preferences lol? I do mean Boston and southern accents. I'm just happy I hold back from most of the Canadianisms eh🤣
Clarkson knows nothing about cars!
If I spend $50k water fording is off the table. Full stop.
I don't know if I would have the heart myself for a new Jeep lol, but when they would let try with theirs I was always super impressed with what a stock Jeep could do.
Just picked one a manual golf r since this will be the last yr of the manuals. I love the no buttons , I hate buttons, buttons make me feel like I’m driving a space ship 😂, VW did there thing were just old and need to adapt to new the tech but I love it, it gives a cleaner look
😆
These things are nothing like the true Jeeps of old, they are just fancy /techie cars now
I totally get it. I like comfort creatures but Jeeps and a handful of vehicles that started off so specialized and it is hard to compromise on those utilitarian aspects and still be the same vehicle. That said, I am always amazed at what a stock Jeep can do.
Extremely quiet, 19:12 what???? Sounds like your in a wind tunnel bro...
Ha! Definitely lol, the thing is a giant brick, but I more meant compared to a gas brick it is super quiet. I personally miss the engine noise and find EV's too quiet. This was way too expensive but one of the only electric vehicles I have liked driving.
I love the retro-cool looks and modern tech in the new ID. Buzz, but the price tag is a significant drawback for most U.S. buyers. Once you add insurance and monthly payments, it becomes a pretty hefty bill. It’s too bad because it’s such a fun concept-hopefully, Volkswagen or other brands will release more affordable versions in the future.
Great comment. Agreed
Really, really, really 😂
Thank you:) I know the only way I can sit through that much info is if it's funny, so I try and repay the favour:)
the accord use to be the fast model
I loved the Accord growing up.
The only reason I wish the BRZ had Symmetrical AWD is because it’s Subaru’s only 2-door model. Therefore, there’s the empty void of a 2-door car with SAWD.
I'm glad they didn't in some ways because it is so much fun in RWD, but agreed there could be one for sure. I was surprised at how well it did with good snow tires in the winter. I drove it for 2 winters doing Uber Eats lol. Thing was a little tank.
@@Neutralreviews The Toyota 86 can easily keep the void filled for those who want RWD. After all, Subaru is a brand known for its trademark SAWD system.
@@anonymous3738it’d be completely engineered differently and it’s cheap by the dual R&D. Also Subaru benefits by people like me that wanted an 86, but found a BRZ. I want a WRX though as a second car down the road though
If u have one u love it-everyone who has one agrees
I got it after I drove it for sure. Sounded pretty good too.
I bought one myself 2024 R 6 speed. I had a 2020 SI and I traded it in for 24 R.
I have really come to appreciate the Si and almost bought one, but after my first snow day with my R manual I was happy with my purchase;)
@ few things here. Considering that I have owned an SI for a year I loved it. Great car amazing on fuel and amazing 6 speed transmission and steering feel and love the short gearing. But FWD sucks I couldn’t stand it always spinning and I can’t even imagine if it was Type R with 315hp. Now for the MK8R it’s super luxury and AWD is amazing not to worry about spinning. The transmission feel is not as good as SI but that was quickly fixed with Sportshifters heavy knob ($300can knob) MK8R short gearing is amazing identical to SI and having AWD with short gearing really is enjoyable. I have driven many MK8 GTIs and they’re amazing as well but gearing is way too long 2nd gear redlines about 110kmh vs MK8R 90kmh. Over all can’t go wrong with any of them but SI is not to be even compared to R. GTI and SI is more fair comparison and GTI feel much faster with 241hp. Here’s my video of my R th-cam.com/video/BGmZFgKKZgw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=advy_ap1j3idU6Ap
@@1bojanbojan Awesome! Agreed. I love the Si but AWD is more fun in the winter. I drove a Type R on a snowy day and it was more frustrating than anything in those conditions. That is saying something because it is one of my favourite cars of all time. I have a GTI as well and it is the natural competitor to the SI. I am always taken away with how much I enjoy driving the Si even though it is probably the slowest out of all the new enthusiast vehicles. Great to know about the shifter. I am surprised they put such a cheap feeling shift knob considering they went to so much effort every where else to feel premium.
The Honda passport I test drove was teched but understandable and physical controls for some options.
I like the Passport too.
The tech is ridiculous I just test drive one it’s a tech tsunami in there the dash, the info screen the steering wheel.
"Tech tsunami" love the description lol.
Spare tire is under the car
Good to know!
Hi Terrance. Thanks for the great Golf R content. I really appreciate your ownership insights. I was wondering if you were sufficiently concerned about the long term reliability of the R to obtain an extended warranty at the time of purchase? I'm also curious as to what size of winter tires you have installed? Have you looked into sourcing a spare tire? All the best for the holidays!
Hi! Thank you for the kind words. Great questions. I have a 2015 GTI that has been a money pit lol. That said, supposedly the R is built in Germany where the product is better built...but I plan on getting the extra warranty for sure. I leased so I didn't want to buy up front just in case even though a better deal to do right away. And the winters are 18's. Happy holidays as well:)
Forgot. I saw a comment that said you can remove the subwoofer and put one from a mk7.5 in but no I haven't actually looked into it.
Of all the BEVs on sale so far, this is the most appealing to me. VW has achieved making a vehicle here that would undoubtedly allow me to overlook the odd things that are not perfect and enjoy ownership.......except the cost which is beyond me as a new purchase. Used though at half the cost and I would probably buy it.
It is exciting but you are correct. EV's are so over the top expensive and they depreciate a lot and I don't know how anyone can afford them.
I will update my ND with an after market screen because then I have no buttons just the screen and add some cameras front and back
It's great to be able to update the cars we like and don't want to part from with after market solutions like those.
I have this exact car and cannot explain how good it is for the price. The handling is mind blowing.
Thanks for commenting and you are right. I couldn't believe how much more agile and responsive it was compared to the competition. You have a great car!
Just bought a used 2023 R and honestly, i only have one objection to the infotainment system and that is the fact that the haptics below the MIB screen are not backlit to see at night. That was an idiotic decion by VW but other than that, i can get to pretty much any function within a click or two.
Thanks! Always good to hear from an owner.
Great review! Your review is spot on. I own the 40th GLI; it's been a great VW so far.
Thank you! Every time I see one now I smile. I think it's a great car.
I think it's great that you put this together for us! Who knew VW put so much thought into addressing some of the common complaints of these all-touchscreen systems? Considering the challenges faced by early adopters of these systems, it's nice to see this level of thought and user functionality being baked into the systems by the manufacturers who insist on adopting them now. As the owner of a 9th gen Civic with the 1st gen HondaLink system I am definitely biased against these screens because of the poor functionality and responsiveness of mine so I was very appreciative when Honda brought back the buttons and knobs. Of course, like yourself, the touchscreen alone was not a deal breaker for me either and I basically just leave it on the radio screen, other than to make the occasional phone call, and use the steering wheel buttons to adjust volume or change songs so I don't have to interact with it.
It dawned on me when playing around with it after I bought it that it had so many features I didn't realize. I thought I've seen sooo many reviews on this car but no buddy has mentioned about how you can preload certain key features like your heated seats, temp and steering wheel heat so they come on while the Infotainment is booting up. I thought if it was helpful for me it might be for others too.
@@Neutralreviews For sure, that makes perfect sense! These modern infotainment systems and driver UX screens are so complex these days that they have a steep learning curve to really get to know all the intricacies. I think this is very helpful and it would be great to see this sort of video for other cars too!
@@chrisbrook1234 Great idea!
BRZ seems like your car of choice, as you're always comparing it with ND3.
I owned one at the time. I 100% would take a mx-5 over the BRZ because of how incredibly engaging they are, but if you can't afford one as a second or third car and need to daily the BRZ/GR 86 come in.
Why do I feel like your backrest needs to lean back more it's like you're leaning into the steering wheel🤷
🤣
it's a 4-seater because it has reduced payload capacity. Can't take the weight of 5 ppl. thanks for the vid!!
Interesting! And thank you:)
I'm a Korean who started a channel because I love golf so much. If it's okay, I'd like to add Korean subtitles to this video and share it with people who love golf. The MK8 R is not sold in Korea, so it's even rarer. I'll put your link and tag as a basic feature. ❤❤
Such a great car! It's frustrating when they don't sell certain cars globally! That's how we feel here in Canada about the Toyota GR Yaris. Thanks for commenting and sharing.
Time 💣
Hope not lol! It's scary because you are essentially buying a computer on wheels now a days
even more so , this car won't have parts to support it and keep it alive long term. Especially with the strike i hear and its $$$$ to maintain past 100k miles.
Nice review. Lot of info and details that so many other reviews left out
Thank you! That makes me feel better because I think I must drive everyone else nuts with all the detail lol. I just feel guilty every time and think what if someone was watching because they were thinking of buying one and not just interested in learning about it for fun.
I have a 2023 Golf R manual bought new. One big disappointment is with only 3400 miles popped error of AWD system fault and only FWD available and to service the car. My car is at the dealer and they ordered a new Haldex unit to change out the old. I have not abused the car and not driven harshly, not had aggressive clutch drops to preserve the clutch. All I have read can be electrical problem, clutch wear(not likely) or fluid contamination or clogged filter-also unlikely since service is recommended at 3-4 years interval or lastly pump failure. I have had Subaru STIs in the past and the AWD systems are much more robust in my opinion. I have lost confidence in VW's solution for AWD. Otherwise love the car.
Sorry to hear that! Hope it is not a thing. Good to know so thanks for sharing
That's pretty out of the ordinary for the Mk8 AWD system, it's using the rear diff from the new RS3, not the old Haldex system of Mk7/Mk7.5 Golf R's. Best of luck. Hopefully just a fluke.
@@tsenif good comment and let's hope you're right!
@@tsenif Hope so. Should be getting car back tomorrow. If I have any information to share from service department will report back.
I was curious about how common that was. VW dealer that's in a network where a good friend works had 2 buy back R's. He looked up the paperwork, and both were purchased back for rear haldex/diff replace.
Go ahead just put 22” wheels on it… why not! 😂
Plz bring it South Africa
Why don't bring this Jetta GLI in South Africa course lots people want it😢😢😢😢😢
It's so frustrating! I know here in Canada we don't get certain cars too we really want like the GR Yaris and others.
Congrats on the Golf R! I am waiting for the 2025 for myself. Gonna be a nice upgrade from my Acura ILX.. Hopefully reliability won’t be to bad lol.
Thanks! I went with this because I love driving manual, but I personally really like the more aggressive front facia of the 2025. Thanks for commenting and hope you get the car you want.
I'm also patiently waiting for the 2025 Golf R here in the States. Go to the /r/Golf_R subreddit. Generally speaking, these Mk8/Mk8.5 Golf R & Golf GTI's are pretty reliable. They're all made & assembled in Germany. Golf R has forged engine internals while the GTI has some forged & some cast. I think the Golf R is fairly reliable, especially if you take care of it properly. Take it to the dealer for regular maintenance intervals (or do it yourself if that's what you prefer.) & you should be good. I think the only thing that people complain about is that dreaded water pump. IIRC, they did update/fix that for the Mk8/Mk8.5, but I could be wrong.
@@tsenif great comments/thank you! And you will love it!
Get the manual, plain and simple more fun to drive. Still driving my 2012 Golf R manual with 135K miles, sunroof, track weekends history, perfect car (northern Wisconsin), did timing belt at 125K. My best car ever... Jim Bob
@ Cool car! There was one in my old neighborhood! Thanks for commenting
What tire are you using? Are you using all weather tires?
265/30ZR-19 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires. This was a press car and still had the factory summer tires.
Love the intro!
Thank you! It was fun to make.
It’s a 2.0l 4 cylinder what do you think it would sound like
🤣
Love the Golf R. I have a Pure White 20th Anniversary that I'm trading in as soon as I can get a hold of a 2025 Black Edition.
I wish they still gave a manual option but I have to say I love the new more aggressive front facia on the 2025 mk 8.5! Good luck and enjoy
It's my daily too... so sick man... once tuned these cars come alive. 8K plus miles on APR Stage I 93 Octane full torque tune and no clutch slippage, I think the stock clutches appear to handle up to 400 TQ with no slippage
Interesting! Happy for you. I really am glad I got it!
May I know the offcial name of the colour of the car please?
I believe Aero Grey Metalic. Not exciting in pics but looks classy and unique in real life.
2024 golf R is badass. I got a white one(more invisible) put some neuspeed 18 inch wheels with Pilot Sport 4s rubber along with neuspeed lowering springs and 2-piece 370mm rotors with 6 piston calipers and Ferodo pads. Now braking from 150 to 100 in a blip is no sweat with perfect handling. 60-0 braking is insanely good. The seats are extremely comfortable. A real driver's car. I recommend Liquimoly oil from Germany. They have great customer service.
I bet that thing is fun to drive! I was so close to getting the white but I had a car in a similar blue years ago I missed it.
