Fishing Trip Calaveras Lake -- 13 Sept 2024 -- Young Martin's Reels
This was a fantastic fishing trip to Calaveras Lake on Friday, the 13th of September 2024. This was one of my best days of fishing ever. We caught a 30", a 32", a 23", A 28" and another 30" redfish. We had a blast.

Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.
You can join Young Martin’s Reels on Facebook@ YoungMartin’sReels | Facebook
If I can be of assistance, feel free to contact me Rick48cj2a@yahoo.com
I would also like to thank Dennis Kuntz of 2nd Chance Tackle. His videos have helped to fill in the gaps in my “reel” knowledge. Without his TH-cam videos I’m afraid Young Martin’s Reels would not exist.

    The original bailes on these reels had a manufacturing defect. The bail wire was spot welded to the fitting on the take-up end. That was the weak point. They have a replacement 2nd generation bail assembly to fix that problem.

      You know what they say about the blind squirrel. Well that was me yesterday. I was told about that spot two years ago. I had a little less luck there two other times but never like that. I’ve revisited the spot no less than 20 more times in the last two years and caught nothing. You just had to be in the right spot at the right time. Awesome! If you’ve never caught a nice size fish on a thumb drag conventional reel, you really need to try one. It’s an amazing experience. I’m not done with it yet. I still want to catch one from start to finish. I don’t think I’ll get to go fishing again until sometime in November. I’ll need my doctor’s okay after surgery so I’m impatiently waiting for another crack at it.

      Melo, the only reason I knew to be there was because you told me about it two years ago. We had a great time. The odd thing was that there were at least 10 other boats out there around us and I don’t think any of them caught a fish. We were in the right place at the right time. It looks like I won’t be back out now until November. I get to meet Oscar with Finaddicts tomorrow for their clinic. I don’t suppose you are going to it? I’ve got 20 rods and reels ready for them.

    Thank you for this video. I have a 304, the internals are a little different. Its says CAP on the side cover. What does CAP stand for, and there is a little inner planetary type gear that sits inside the main gear. I believe that is what runs the spool up and down, but it does it in a strange fashion. It kind of bobbles as it goes up and down. maybe I misaligned it during reassembly. Again thanks for the nice video and I look forward to your response. PS I’m a new subscriber to your channel.

    • @youngmartinsreels5314
      @youngmartinsreels5314 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I borrowed this from the Michell reel museum, “The CAP reel, eventually becoming the Model 304 reel, was originally made exclusively for it’s “inventor - wholesaler” or jobber from Angers, La Canne à Pêche (CAP, AKA C.A.P.), most likely the largest jobber in France at that time. Carpano and Pons at that time had no direct sales responsibility or territory at all for the CAP reel but did for their own reel referred to then as “The Mitchell”, with completely different mechanics and “sexy” looking as well! Carpano & Pons formed “Mitchell” as a separate corporation in the mid fifties along with the introduction of their own “round Body” called the Mitchell CAP 54. Thus the soon to be called “Mitchell 304” series was born. (Updated October 5th, 2008 by JP Gumprich)” That planetary gear is to create a more varied line lay on the spool. It does cause a slight pause on both the up and down stroke of axel shaft.

    • @youngmartinsreels5314
      @youngmartinsreels5314 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Did you remove the locking clip that holds the spool on the hub. If not, remove it. Does the spool rotate? If not, the drag knob may be too tight. Loosen the drag knob all the way up. Does it rotate now? If not, someone may have miss adjusted the drag screw. Lift up the drag knob until the screw disengages from screw head and unscrew the screw a few turns. Does it rotate now? If not, you might have corrosion inside the center of the spool. Try soaking it in warm vinegar for a hour or so. If during any of these steps, it rotates, pull out on it while rotating.

      Chris, I buy the acid brushes in bulk on Amazon but if I'm in a pinch and need one right now, I buy packages of 5 at Dollar tree. The only thing plastic in this reel is the center spindle that the spool slides over, the release button, and the plastic retrieve pin assembly inside the rotor. That Laker II reel is mostly made that way too.

      I’m glad you found it helpful. When I first started servicing reels, I was taught to keep the clutch free of grease and oil. As I got more experience I found many anti reverse clutches rusted away and broken and I wondered if grease might have prevented that. After that I got the chance to work on newer reels and I found that they were coming from the factory with the clutch bearings greased. Now I always either grease or oil those clutches. I had one that slipped with grease so I oiled it but I mostly use grease now. I glad the video helped.

    Well, the story of this reel was pretty cut and dried. In general snd as you know there are very few South Bend reels that I feel are worth anything. The ones with the Gladding name are awful for the most part especially the ones made in Hong Kong. The only ones I like are the Ohmori made Classic Series South Bend spinning reels. I own two of them. I’m sorry this Black Beauty wan’t so beautiful after all. - Chris

    • @youngmartinsreels5314
      @youngmartinsreels5314 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Chris, but you are wanting to compare this reel to the high quality saltwater reels you are used to using. This was a nice little graphite reel that was sold at a low end price point. I think a better made pinion could have kept this reel alive but that soft metal couldn’t handle the stress. I put it in the same lot with the Shakespeare reels that look very similar. It just wasn’t designed to last a long time.

      @@youngmartinsreels5314Rick, you are right about this as I was making an unfair comparison. That's a sad end for a reel.😥 IMHO, the best end is when the reel is retired and put on display in a place of honor after wearing to the point of non-function, having caught lots of fish in the process; and the best reel is the one that has lots of good memories associated with it.

    • @youngmartinsreels5314
      @youngmartinsreels5314 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I feel that the failure of this reel was due to the operator. Once the line wrapped around the rotor they kept trying to wind it. It was too much stress for the pinion and it snapped. I believe all of this was caused by using too heavy a line on the reel. It’s too bad because it would have made a great kids reel.

      Mike at the 33 minute and 33 second point in the video I install the axle shaft. At the top of the axle shaft is the clicker cog for the drag. On top of that is a drag washer. Dishwasher is used to set the level position of the spool. When the spool rides too high, you should remove the washer. When the spool rides too low, you should add washers. Yours may require removal of one or more washers. it’s also possible that your spool just isn’t fitting all the way down onto the axle shaft. Do you know the history of this real? Have you ever seen it operate correctly? It could be built up of incorrectly mated parts That said, it’s still more likely to just need an extra drag washer removed. I hope this helps

      Try pushing in and pulling out the spool. Does it move in and out much? If so maybe the axle shaft isn’t secured to the crosswind block properly.

    I’m really impressed with your handle trick. I own this reel but in better cosmetic condition. I am a fan of vintage Roddy reels as I have a few in my collection. There’s something wrong with that oscillation block and axle shaft. My reel is not like this. That pinion gear with the clip can be a pain in the butt! I’ve found these Roddy reels to be quite solid reels. I have not used all the ones I own yet. I’ve never taken mine apart to the extent that you have because I did not need to. That AR claw and spring was a difficult chore. You did very well with that pinion. I’m glad it went togethe so well. - Chris

    • @youngmartinsreels5314
      @youngmartinsreels5314 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Chris, one thing I’ve learned working on these old reels is that even though they made subtle changes to a reel, the manufacturers tended to leave the model number alone. This might be an earlier example of the reel than yours. It appeared to me that the crosswind block could have been from a different model reel but was adapted to fit this reel. I say that because of the dual screw holes in it. The second hole had never been drilled all the way through. It was as though it had been cast with two holes but only one had drilled out to fit the axle shaft. This could have been done to use up crosswind blocks left over from another reel design that Roddy had left over. All of this is speculation on my part. It doesn’t appear to be a field repair. That anti reverse claw certainly gave me a lot of trouble. I think the last time I had that much trouble was working on the jack plate spring of the Dam 700B. I’m wonder if I’m loosing my touch. It looked a lot easier than it was when I was taking it apart.

    Haven’t used my 440 in almost 20 yrs, took it out to give to a friend and found it’s action to be very stiff. It needed a cleaning and lubrication, very grateful for your video as it saved me time and errors. Works like new now and ready for many more years of fishing. BTW, the 440s are smooth with a fast retrieve, strong and powerful under pressure. My last fish on it was a 28# salmon out of the Sacramento River, a 45 minute haul in on 15# line on a humble fiberglass trout rod. The reel was totally reliable and up to the task, performed flawlessly. I like vintage reels, still use my modified Penn 300 for open ocean fishing.

    What kind of grease and oil do you recommend for cleaning and lubricating this reel?

    • @youngmartinsreels5314
      @youngmartinsreels5314 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      As long as it's a fishing reel grease, I pretty much use it. Mostly I use Penn Reel Grease and Superlube. For oil I use Penn Reel Oil, mostly because it's inexpensive. I usually clean my reels with WD40.

    • @youngmartinsreels5314
      @youngmartinsreels5314 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      WD40 and a toothbrush mostly. Once the grease is broken down, I use paper towels and cotton swabs to wipe it down. Sometimes the grease it hardened to the point that even WD40 has trouble breaking it down, that’s when I use a screw drive to scrape flat areas and an ice pick to clear gear teeth.

      WD40 works well to free parts up but it doesn’t work well long term to keep parts moving. Hot water also helps to get parts moving again. I good fishing reel oil should keep it free once you get it moving again.

    • @youngmartinsreels5314

      As far as I know, parts are not available for this reel. Sometime parts can be found on eBay as old repair shops are liquidated or you might find a parts reel. Another option is to make one yourself. You can measure the diameter of the spring, and then purchase spring wire that size to make a replacement. If the collar is in good condition, you should be able to reuse it.

      I have a garage I operate out of now and PB Blaster still stinks. I’d rather use a product that works better and doesn’t stink nearly as much. Occasionally now I use mineral spirits or vinegar in my parts cleaner for really corroded or grease choked parts and they stink too. However, their smell usually dissipates fairly quickly. I’m just not a fan of PB Blaster. I didn’t like the smell, or how it worked.

      Say, there is an automotive product made for body work preparation called "wax and grease remover". It is even sold at hardware stores. It comes in a gallon container and will be on the shelf right near the mineral spirits, acetone, naphthalene, etc. It smells much better than PB blaster for sure and not as strong as paint thinner plus it will be safe on plastics and stickers and all metal too, maybe give it a try, good luck buddy!
