  • In this video we disassemble, clean, lubricate and reassemble a Julius Vom Hofe Ocean B conventional fishing reel. Most parts of the reel are either stamped or engraved with the number 18.

Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.

I would also like to thank Dennis Kuntz of 2nd Chance Tackle. His videos have helped to fill in the gaps in my “reel” knowledge. Without his TH-cam videos I’m afraid Young Martin’s Reels would not exist.

Rick, Dennis Kuntz called this reel “ the Holy Grail.” It has been suggested by Dennis that the lever in the side plate is not another clicker but is a spool lock for when the reel is not in use. Julius Vom Hofe invented the star drag. IThis reel is not priceless but it is close from everything I’ve found out about it. Your friend, made an astounding purchase. Rick, you are one brave soul to take this reel apart! Dennis also said that Vom Hofe eventually merged with Ocean City. ORCA had extensive information about and history of Julius Vom Hofe reels. This may be one of your best videos ever Rick! Wow what a reel! - Chris

I'll bet the reel has two sets of clickers so the user has a little control over how much tension is required to move the spool. Small clicker in still water, big clicker in a little bit of current, both clickers in fast current.
That's a chunky reel. The gears are massive! And the anti-reverse dog and ratchet too! But why? The reel has only two drag friction washers, so the maximum drag that can be applied shouldn't be all that high. And the reel has brass posts going between the two sides, so I'll bet reel flex also limits the amount of drag that can be applied. Hmmmm.....
Maybe the stout gears and massive anti-reverse were intended to withstand the significant shock loads you might get when a big fish hits your lure while trolling with heavy Dacron line. I'll bet the reel predates monofilament, so shock leaders probably weren't a thing when the reel was designed.
    That's a cool reel.

I think you could be correct about how the two clickers are used. Since I’ve started working on this reel I have found that Julius Vom Hofe filed the first patent for the star drag on fishing reels. Would someone else have come up with this design, maybe so. However, we can certainly trace some of the best ever reel design features back to him.
Did he even have an understanding of surface area vs max drag, I don’t know. This reel was most likely built before 1939. Did early reel designers understand the physics involved in how a reel works. Many people during that time were highly educated but we’ve had so much more mechanical experience over the last hundred years to pull from. Do you think the first conventional reel designer was concerned with the shock applied to the reel when a fish hit. I don’t have any idea. This reel is a beast and it was built to handle big fish. The reel definitely predates monofilament line. Apparently these reels are highly sought after by collectors. I hope I haven’t devalued it with my amateurish repairs.

@@youngmartinsreels5314 Interesting questions. Pre-1939, yeah, your thoughts are probably closer to the truth than mine were.
