Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.

I would also like to thank Dennis Kuntz of 2nd Chance Tackle. His videos have helped to fill in the gaps in my “reel” knowledge. Without his TH-cam videos I’m afraid Young Martin’s Reels would not exist.

Mike, I’m glad he liked it. Kissing fish was something my dad started in his later years. I’m pretty sure it started as a joke. Now it just seems to be a way of showing your appreciation for the fish you caught. Is it gross? Yes, that makes it even more funny.

First thing I want to know is how did your boat behave on this trip? It did not start out too well! Rick, you need to adopt the so-called fish rag (disposable) for use with stinking, slimy catfish. Can’t you ever grab a catfish by the tail and throw it quickly. I do it with sharks and even bluefish all the time. Of course, it depends on the size of the shark! LOL. Have you ever heard of a Bonnet Head shark. I caught a very spirited 3 1/2 ft. one at the beach this week. They don’t get much bigger than that. It is a member of the hammer-head shark family and supposedly very fine eating. We let mine go. He put up a great fight. As always I enjoyed the video. - Chris

The boat report is at the end of the video. I guess you didn’t make it that far. I’ve added another cute which I hope will clear up the problem in the next few trips. I have several rags in my boat for that but I always start out trying to rinse the slime off first. Never, grab a catfish by the tail. That is a sure way of getting the barb into your hand. They are extremely flexible and flip all the way back to the tail.
