    We own all field bred dogs. A springer, a golden and a Labrador. I’m happy you guys touched on the subject but didn’t get really down in the weeds. I really don’t even like calling a retriever a flushing dog. I tend to think a retriever is a retriever. It’s never been bred for the intense flush. So, retrievers aren’t pointers or flushes there are ones the flush and ones that will hold a point but they are retrieves. I’ve seen pit bulls flush, they aren’t really “flushers”.

    Good interview! The yard work part is very similar to how I bring my field trial Spaniels (cockers and springers) along. The bird work is the last thing we do and then try to push them hard. I do feel the people that live in a area that can do most of their training on birds from the start have a slight advantage at the trial field. We do catch up as we put more birds on our dogs and our training is top notch so we win on that count.😊

    Interesting conversation. Pushing a dog with the collar on low level is something I rarely do except during the force fetch stage. I have used the collar for lack of effort which is more of a pushing into the behavior but is something I have for the most part avoided. I am curious at what point (if ever) you stop pushing with the collar? I am wondering about the aversive fallout of this system I suppose. I have multiple field trial dogs (Spaniels) so leaning on the collar going forward is not an option. My dogs always wear the collar when training but for my finished dogs I may hit the button once every 3 or 4 months or more.

      Thanks for watching! The ecollar is simply another tool the same as any other training item such as leash or whichever type of training collar system you may choose (prong, slip, pinch, etc). The same way we end up in the field without dependent on those tools is the same for the Ecollar. You aren’t “driving” the dog every rep for the rest of life. You’re training until you get the behavior to the appropriate/desired level then it’s up to you as a trainer to maintain the standard. For the concern of it possibly becoming aversive Im personally not concerned at all. Again, it’s a tool. If there’s aversive fallout then I didn’t use the tool correctly. The timing, consistency, and education is the most important part. Specifically the activation vs aversive level stimulation we briefly discussed in the video. Hope this answers your questions. Thanks for watching!

    I’m interested in training my dog to go duck hunting with me, I’ve seen a lot of very aggressive force fetch training videos, this video is obviously not one of them, but I am confused a bit. Why are we using negative reinforcement before asking for a behavior? I understand if he’s not dropping, give a correction, but before asking for a fetch, he’s not doing anything wrong, I don’t see why he needs to be corrected?

    • @gundogityourself
      @gundogityourself 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The naming of a behavior means little to the dog if they don’t understand what that behavior is. In this system you teach the dog they want to do the behavior before teaching them they have to do it. When you have the “want” and the “have to” then it’s easy to name the behavior. Remember, words only matter to the handler at the start. Also, it’s important to note, negative reinforcement is not a “correction”. That would fall into positive punishment if it reached the aversive level to stop them from doing the behavior. So it’s not about the dog “doing wrong.” Negative reinforcement is the clear communication for the dogs performance of a behavior shutting off pressure. But the pressure is so extremely low if we’ve done our jobs right that it’s not perceived as aversive. They’ve been prepared for pressure which is how you can see the dog immediately and enthusiastically start performing the task when it’s applied. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching!

      The ecollar is the same as any other training tool. For the same reason we end up in the field without a lead, check chords, prong collar, or pinch collar every time for the rest of the dogs life is the same reason why the performance of the behavior isn’t entirely dependent on the Ecollar. It’s how you train with the tool that determines the overall effectiveness of the training approach.

    Hi from Germany, I'm a new subscriber to your channel. I have learned so much in the last videos and podcasts and I am really happy that I still have so much content to catch up on. I wonder if the "Force Fetch" program is useful for all dogs even if they actually like to fetch and bring. The theory behind it definitely makes a lot of sense. I think it's a pity that nobody teaches this system here.

    • @gundogityourself
      @gundogityourself 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I believe there’s value in every dog going through a formal retrieve program. If for anything else just to set a clear standard and expectation for the dog. Believe it or not, the bulk of traditional force fetch programs are steeped in German training. There are a lot more people training this way (with E collars!) in Germany than what’s talked about. They just keep it pretty quiet so they don’t have to deal with blow back from people that refuse to understand the training approach. The German testing system over here is one of the main groups that advocates force fetching dogs in time for their testing.

    Great episode, Nick. A lot of great info covered! -100% agree if considering breeding, one of your first questions should be: "Is my girl dying a risk I am willing to take for this litter of puppies? What are these puppies bringing to the breed as a whole?" Real life isn't a Disney dog movie. -I think we are really in the infancy of learning the potential of puppies. Pat Nolan and his "Retriever From The Pup Up" program is really impressing me. I'm watching a friend with a now 5 month old Golden do some pretty amazing things. From 8 weeks old and on, he was started on the ideas and concepts of marking, running "blind" retrieves and casting/handling. A lot of the old guard would say not to really do anything much with him at all until he is 6 months old and can start formal obedience and force fetch, etc. Instead this dog is looking waaaay out there for things to go pick up, is way ahead of the stereotypical puppy in regard to retrieving, delivery and other big dog concepts. It's very cool stuff.

      Pat Nolan is THE MAN! His puppy program is excellent and I've recommended it to all of our puppy buyers (with the caveat that our pups aren't retrievers only, so there are some things we can hold off on, and some other things we need to bring into the picture early on.) You don’t have to have the T&T. We touch on that in the podcast episode going into more detail on the entire program. But long story short, you can mark and pay to the front. The main component to this is making sure the dog removes himself from the bumper and you’re not “taking” it from them. The T&T is convenient for that as the mark and access to the reward is behind them. It’s not required though.

    Until the cost comes down, buying from local farmers is never gonna be the norm or attainable by very many people. I raise my own hogs as I need to stock my freezer, I raise my own beef from time to time to stock my freezer. Faith and I hunt and fish for nearly every creature out there and stock our freezer. It's a job to keep enough meat stocked away from year to year. I reality very few people do this because of the time and effort required. They believe it's easier to earn money and just buy that meat. The issue for Faith and I is what we know about healthy foods. We can't buy from your normal grocery stores. We also can every vegetable and freeze what can be can easily. It's nearly a full time job to live self-sufficient. The cheapest way to buy beef I have found is knowing a farmer and going to the stockyard on the day he is carrying a load of his healthy cattle to sell and buying that animal and having butchered the way we would want. We average $4-$5 per lb doing this on occasion. There are many solutions to healthy meats.

      @@gundogityourself great attitude to have! It doesn't make it suck less, but being prepared helps knock some stress off the other end. Re: tires, the gold standard for many for a long time was the BF Goodrich KO2 (and I think they are still a great tire), but at the recommendation of a friend that owns a tire shop, we tried Falkens starting in 2018. We have the Falken Rubitrek on our Toyota 4Runner and the tires just hit 80k miles. Yes you read that right. They have seen a lot of highway miles, been all over the west on forest service roads, BLM, trails, all over. Falken has since released the Wildpeak AT3W and AT4W with similar durability and winter rating that I don't think the previous Wildpeaks had. For my next set of tires I'll be going with the Wildpeak vs the Rubitrek since they are easier to find at a random tire shop in stock if you should ever have a major tire boo boo. All of these I'm speaking of we buy in LT/Light Truck/E Load Range/10 ply. Some will say E load range is overkill for half ton trucks and SUVs and will do a C load range instead. C and E load range are a little rougher and louder on the highway than a P rated passenger tire, but the win is in durability. By comparison, the P rated all terrains that came on my GMC Sierra, one has already been replaced due to a sidewall penetration on a paved road and the tires won't last until 40k miles almost assuredly. GDIY needs a good tire sponsor! Falken, where you at!? :D

    Why don't you use a marker word?

    • @gundogityourself
      @gundogityourself 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You can use a marker word. Chris prefers to use the treat and train for the mark so the reward is always away from himself. It can help provide clarity to ensure the dog is always the one reaching to out the object in his mouth and, conversely, the dog removing his mouth from the object to go get paid behind him. If you use your marker word then the dogs attention will remain to you at the front. He advises in the episode that the treat and train isn’t required. He just prefers it. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching!

    Nick, GDIY gets better every episode I think. I started listening as an opportunity to hear more dog training content, but you have really surpassed my expectations in how curious you are and how willing you are to hear, discuss and comment on training theory and methods that are contrary to the "sacred cows" of dog training tradition, even if they aren't methods you (or others) find work for them moving forward. I feel some real kinship there as a person who has used many tools and many methods looking for answers in my own dog training/owning journey. At times it can be very difficult for others to understand or accept a position of: "I have no issue with you using Method X, I think Method X is probably the most effective method for the gundog space currently...but tell me what else is out there because I'd be happy to never use Method X on another dog...I'm here to learn." Keep up the great work!

      That truly means a lot and you nailed exactly what the show is about. It’s not about telling anyone how to train their own dog. It’s about putting forth all of the information and options the best we can do that each handler can decide the best path forward for themselves. I get asked all the time which method is best. I just say whichever method makes the most sense to them and their dog. At the end of the day if it doesn’t make sense to the owner then it won’t make sense to the dog. Appreciate you checking out the show and taking the time to leave the feedback.

    Do you have any videos or discussions about working with dogs with noise sensitivity?

    • @gundogityourself
      @gundogityourself 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Not specifically on noise sensitivity no. Just sprinkled in elements of episodes where we discuss gun introduction. I’m not one to equate the two very much outside of a few obvious notes such as there being a loud noise though. I think it’s deeper than that when considering such things as the dogs drive and whether they’re in odor or not.

    Went to the seminar they are talking about in video. Easily worth twice what I paid. It’s a lot to digest but luckily you get to keep the homework/read ahead info to go back and look at it with new eyes, which helps someone like me out a lot. Read, learn via hands on, read again and then I can really start applying with a real understanding of what’s going on and not just going through the motions of what someone else outlined for me.

      @gundogityourself 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Absolutely. Thats understandable and, to be honest, I don't think its worth throwing the baby out with the bath water. Theres still so much value and golden lessons in some of the "old school" approaches. However, the industry cant continue to claim the dogs are "better" and have evolved so much over generations meanwhile our training approaches haven't evolved at all. Its time the gun dog space starts opening up to some new concepts and try to slowly incorporate them within our current processes. Thats the only way anything ever improves. We cant continue to do things simply because thats how they've always been done before.

      @@gundogityourself training can be done so many ways and if the results are positive then your golden. For me it's about the dog and numbers of birds. In the 70's and 80's I would have a broke 1 to 11/2 year old dog, where today it takes 3 to 5 years to put a dog in front of the same amount of wild birds.

    • @gundogityourself
      @gundogityourself 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Absolutely. If anyone trains their dog and is happy with the results and where/how their dog ended up then I say they chose the right method for them. I don't add or deduct points to anyone's process on how they ended up somewhere as long as they're happy with the results. Thats a very good point in regards to wild bird populations. I would throw that feather in the cap of why alternative methods should at least be explored. We aren't operating with the same genetics in the dogs nor are we able to go out our back door and fill our vests with wild birds any longer.

    Question, - - my dog is free-shaped to fetch up the item, bring it to hand but is mouthing and not always holding it for a period of time. My concern is the amount of mouthing/rolling/biting the item and trying to not reinforce a bad habit. Typically you would extend the duration of the hold, name the behavior and then introduce all the types of items you'll work with at this time (if I understand your video correctly) before moving to the table. Because of the mouthing, should I just move to the table at this point to work on the mouthing/rolling/biting? Thanks.

    • @gundogityourself
      @gundogityourself 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The always famous response: it depends. Is your dog old/mature enough to start the entire table program? You can clean up a whole lot with the shaping process but you can also clean it up once you get to the table. If you're really only worried about the mouthiness getting reinforced during shaping then Id say simply don't reinforce it then. You don't have to mark/pay until theres a quiet mouth. If the dog is getting rewarded and reinforced for rolling it around then that would just mean that you decided to pay it. Long story short: dealer's choice. Im personally not super big on jumping on the table for a short glimpse of the program and getting off. So if you're only worried about the mouthing then I would probably try and clean up off the table. If you're ready for the whole program then why not? Thanks for watching!

    Bell Bowl Prairie's loss is heartrending. It's insanity. We talk out both sides of our mouths. We need this habitat, but nobody wants to speak out when development or production agriculture is the one doing the destruction. Regulation of these industries and a ROBUST program to purchase remnant prairie and wetlands and restore degraded properties needs to be a priority.

    I learned marker/clicker training from a lady with Mals almost 25 years ago. I was 15 and still learning how to learn so my results were mixed because my consistency/timing were mixed. I have a 17 month old Braque Francais now, and I started her with the clicker the day I brought her home. I was planning to force fetch this winter after the season, but I couldn't help but see what she would do knowing she was a perfect candidate for this because of our initial work. Guys... this will fundamentally change the way force fetch is done; It just makes way too much sense. messed around for a couple of mornings with targeting and progressed to fingers in mouth yesterday. Started there this morning, and 6 reps in went and got a PVC pipe. She reached and mouthed it on the 1st rep and by the 4th she held for probably 3 seconds and I paid out jackpot and we ended on that. It makes sense to me and so it will work for me. I might walk it back and look for longer holds before I go back to the PVC pipe, but she's getting it and it makes sense to her, too, which is definitely the most important part. FYI I Taught a release with the clicker too after the "Tug" episode (243 I think?). We'd tug and when she released, I'd click and give it right back. It was the fastest thing I've ever EVER taught a dog and an UNREAL experience to watch that lightbulb turn on for her. She loves to work and she LOVES to tug, but you say "give" and it's a super clean release. Thank you both so much for the work you're doing. I'm not exaggerating when I say this will change the Force Fetch experience for so many people and their dogs!
