Mastering Decorative Cuts: A Beginners Guide
The swivel knife can be one of the most tricky leather tools to get comfortable with. It takes a lot of time running one to develop good feel for it. After a handful of years, I still learn something new with it every single day.
A swivel knife is used to carve vegetable tanned leather and can be utilized to create beautiful pieces of art! While the knife doesn't actually remove material, it cuts the surface and opens up a small channel. Those cuts will often times make up the primary object of the design and will then be beveled, to add depth. The swivel knife can also be used to create single detail cuts, often referred to as decorative cuts, deco cuts, ornamental cuts, or dress cuts. These flowing cuts are generally the final step of a tooling project and play a key role in highlighting the intricate details of a pattern.
In this video, decorative cuts will be the main focus, but basic swivel knife usage is the most important part to creating smooth and effortless dress cuts!

How to Use Bar Grounders for Leather Tooling
มุมมอง 9K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Bar Grounders are a tool option in leather carving/stamping that are used to fill in the background areas of a design. The impression that bar grounders leave in the leather is the look of tiny seed clusters. Bar grounders are a step up from other basic backgrounding tools used in the craft. They take precision and patience to accurately and consistently replicate quality results. To some, bar ...

What are you making?
I am definitely going to practice using the freehand decorative cuts. Great accents to the piece
Rank 🔥👊🏽 thanks
How did you make your logo to stamp so easily?
They're a game changer for sure!
I’m going to make this for my woman, but I want to paint the three flowers pink! What kind of paint do you use for the white letters you do, acrylic? Thanks for the detailed video!
Just ordered a cobra 26 sewing machine and wanted a few suggestions on what brands of bonded nylon thread you would recommend or supplier of the thread. You do amazing work on your belts. Any suggestion would be much appreciated! Thanks.
Thanks
What is the foundation material that you are working on?
Great work!!
Where can I buy the screws that hold the blade and the ferrule of the Barry King knife?
Awesome tip, thankyou so much
Love your passion for this, keep it up!

Thank you for this video! Decorative cuts are one of the things I struggle with the most in my tooling, even to the point that on my most recent belt I started using veiners for decorative cuts on vinework I’ve noticed your videos are always very bright when I play them on TH-cam, I recently learned that turning HDR film mode off on the iPhone eliminates this. Love watching your content!
That is such a badass belt!!
Thank you for another great video. I definitely still struggle with my decorative cuts. This video will sure help me.
Beautiful
Fantastic!!
I love watching these videos and you have a great product. I do have to say the title of this video is a bit misleading. "I quite my job and started a leather business" (wife is an RN makes close if not more than 6 figures) not really a huge risk compared to people clicking this video who are the sole income for the family. Not trying to be negative just some feedback for future video titles.
Thank you, I see what you’re saying and I appreciate it; however, that was not necessarily the case. I quit my career and backed out completely on my college degree and the certifications I had acquired to take a long term bet on myself. We were also only about a month into being new parents and a month into her first job out of college when I started this venture. I gave up what was a steady, and our main source of income to pursue something I had no clue what I was doing and then put a large amount of pressure on her to take on that main role. I agree it may not have been as risky as some situations, but still risky enough in some sense. Especially since we have added twins to the mix and have 3 children that I now take care of while still operating everything around this. This video is more less just a background story of how this all started and giving insight on what I have going on. And although I wouldn’t consider myself successful by any means, I have grown this business to a point where I think it can be motivational to at least a couple people who may be in a similar situation and have thoughts around other ventures 🤙🏽
Understood, I believe I misread the situation. Mad props to you and your journey I love your content and will continue watching and learning from people like you. Also, thank you for actually taking the time to reply. ❤
I can appreciate a good conversation, I was just wanting to supply more context as well. No offense taken or intended. This video probably isn’t the best representation. It was only the first or second time I tried showing my face and talking on camera a couple years ago. Regardless, thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, I appreciate you!
Nice attention to detail and work!
On the stem, do you put a cut through the mules foot stamp?
Not always, but I have before. Or maybe even a single cut along each side of the mule foot! You can run a veiner or light pressured bar grounder along the side of the stem to highlight the edges and then that gives more room to add some cool cuts down the center of it!
@Girtyleatherco man I'd love to see a short video of that
Thank you! I've been waiting for this video from you. Very informative!
I 100% intend on making more videos over this topic going forward! Diving in a little deeper on the different placements and styles of cuts. I primarily wanted to make this video to cover the basics
Very helpful so now I get to practice more!!!!
We can never practice too much, there’s always something to learn or get better at! But this is a fun craft to practice!
@@Girtyleatherco I was a copper plate/steel die engraver for 25+ years. In that you basically push the material into the tool. I'm not used to pulling the tool through the material but I'm learning!
Nnn Thank you so much. Always look forward to your content. Your teaching style is perfect and the work in your “ scrap pile” is something I could only hope to achieve! Your work is beautiful.
Much appreciated! Thank you for taking the time to watch!
I LOVE your vídeos Ethan, GREAT MENTOR,i see your work and repply,lo mejor que pueda
I greatly appreciate your support, it means a lot!
You do awesome work. I really enjoy your instruction. Your work ethic is a great example. I'm a fellow okie. I live in California but plan to retire back in Norman. I hope to someday share some of my work. By the hopefully I will be up to par. Getting better every day. Thanks.
Thanks for the tips! Question- how much pressure are you using when starting your cuts especially when doing the initial outline of the floral pattern? I think you do amazing work!
It can honestly vary, especially if I’m tooling on thin leather compared to thick. I always take the moisture content into consideration too. I think it plays a role in how the knife cuts. Generally, I’m not going past the bevel of my blade but still sinking it in a decent amount initially. You definitely can cut too deep. It just takes some feel over time to find what you like.
Is there a place to get scrap leather I'm in the panhandle of Oklahoma
I put boxes of my scrap leather up for purchase, generally just for the shipping cost alone. But I don’t generate a ton of scrap so it isn’t very often. Panhandle Leather Co. in Amarillo might be a good place, somewhat close, that you can give a call or check out if you’re wanting to stay kind of local. Or Springfield Leather Co will let you order most things by the sq ft online!
Great video, thanks! My daughter does leather craft for 4-H. Decorative cuts is definitely an area in which she has room for improvement. We'll be watching this video together later!
That’s awesome! I hope it can be helpful going forward
These are some very helpful tips and great encouragement on how to get started and gain confidence.
I’m glad it’s helpful, I can trip over my own thoughts and words at times and I don’t know if what I’m trying to say actually comes out correct!
Useful stuff. Thanks!
I appreciate you watching!
Great video. Where do you purchase your leather?
Primarily Springfield Leather Co. but Weaver Leather, and Makers Leather Supply are also some of my go to’s for Hermann Oak. I have a video over my normal purchasing process that might be beneficial to you. There’s a ton of places to choose from depending on what you’re looking for!
You've giving me the type of carving I would like to start with. When I saw the picture of the cactus, I going to start doing and looking for mid-west landscapes. Thanks again.
Landscapes are fun! I’ve tried to create them on projects a handful of times and it can present a whole different level of challenges compared to floral work. I’ve seen some really cool pictures of work other makers have created and it’s inspiring for sure!
One of the goats 🔥
🙏🏽🙏🏽
Awesome tips. Thanks.
I like how you show more than one way, alongside with what you prefer. I really like you're style, I think it's uniquely yours. I'm still finding my lane. Right now it's figure carving. Elk, deer, moose, bears, fish, nature scenes basically.
Figure carving is something I’d love to spend more time working on! It’s always a good challenge when I try my hand at it. Seeing some of those items in the Stohlman museum awhile back took my breath away how realistic they looked!
What size thread do you use for your sewing machine
Beautiful work, great craftsman.
Beautiful blue belt, did you dye it?
Can I private message you?
Man I love your belts! I would love to share some products that I've done. I have done one belt. Lots of shields for fire helmets and radio holsters and straps. I never make the same design twice. All done by hand right down to stitching. I did invest in an airbrush for dying and clear coating. I've been doing leather for about 10 years-ish. I admit I've learned some things from you over the last few days watching your videos. Very nice work. Especially for a young man these days. You have a good work dying and character that this generation greatly lacks.
good tools are too expensive for the average person.
1 1/2 belt or 1 3/4?
Turned out awesome! Cheers
Looks great and you do awesome work. 👍🏻😁
