Watch Me Create a Western Floral Design in Leather

  • Raw footage of me working on a unique leather project in my shop. This is a highly un-edited video of what it is actually like while tooling a custom leather project. Long hours and lots of tapping.
This particular item is the front panel of a custom notebook cover. I am using Hermann Oak full grain natural veg tan leather. I drew this design from scratch with an 8B pencil, directly onto the leather. After quick-casing the leather with water, I used my swivel knife to slowly and precisely carve all the linework. From there, many different tools including: Bevelers, Thumbprints, Flower Centers, Leaf Liners, Veiners, Bar Grounders, Mule Feet, etc. are used to highlight all the details of the design. I use a one pound maul to strike each tool, one tap at a time, to leave each desired impression. Towards the end, I use my swivel knife once again to free hand decorative cuts into many of the elements to add more, in-depth flow.
Although this isn't the most entertaining way to show my work, it is a very true representation of what it is like every day in my shop. I hope some of you enjoy it and can appreciate what goes into making these items one at a time! This is awesome.
I have been studying closely your swivel knife work and how your knife gently cuts a curve. Keeping my knife straight has been challenge. I ended up undercutting so I appreciate you taking the time and considerable effort to video your work.
    Thanks very much!

Awesome ! Your design is getting pretty close to the Art Nouveau floral "whiplash"-style. Check out : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whiplash_(decorative_art)

You have some of the nicest bar grounding I have seen. Just starting mine look like you know what. Very frustrating and makes me want to just forget it. If you could do a video on just this going into detail it would really help.

That is extremely beautiful work. Thank you for sharing. It really does the value of hand crafted pieces like this over mass produced items that are all identically stamped with machines. 😎

Ahh okay I have the size 35 and have really been struggling with my bar grounding. You definitely have some of the best if not the best bar grounding I have seen! Thanks for the reply!
