The Benefits of Creating a Ten-Step Value Scale
They are the best I own from the 14professionsl watercolors from around the world..they are on my biggest and most used pallet In my studio , waiting till I can recover and get out of this dammm bed.
I only just started painting about a month ago after doing much research & watching many videos. In the process of gathering supplies, I had the opportunity to get a FREE block of Arches cold press paper from Joann’s with a 60% off coupon & a $25 gift card! 🎉 But knowing the value of it I hesitated even opening it up, thinking I would save it until I got ‘good enough’. But yesterday I decided to at least open it up & try it to see if it really was worth all the fuss & money. I compared it to a few other papers at the same time. Well, that did it-I’m now spoiled to use anything else 😂! And all I did was a simple color wash, not even a picture, but the fact it hardly buckled & the colors flowed so well was amazing. I’ll still use my other papers for practice & experimenting (I love mixed media art too) but will definitely plan on using Arches in the future. I also loved the 300-lbs handmade card stock I got for painting Christmas cards! Wow, is THAT ever great! I just found your channel today & am enjoying your content-thanks!
This is very helpful as I’m in the process of starting my watercolor journey-thanks!
I've been sharing this all over the place. I call them "SCABS" of paint (those disgusting little dabs of paint on the palette). I want people to have a visual: pussy nasty scabs of paint do NOT lead to vibrant paintings full of life.
ANOTHER FABULOUS VIDEO. You are EXACTLY right on this.
You are wright...😮
The english pronuoncement of turqoise, is horrible! Like the town from US, Des Moines!
Beautiful colors, thank you!
Bold colours can also be found by using gauche rather than watercolour.
Thank you! ❤
Great video! Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
I needed this! Thank you!!!🙏🏼
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
Your fanny pack is ideal.I am curious to know how you set yourself up to paint when up on the mountain. Do you carry a table upon which you set up your palette, big water container and sketch book. Thanks Kris.
Great question. When I'm hiking I just prop my sketch book on my lap. I set the palette and water container on the ground, or on a log, or on a rock ...whatever is available. I'm usually hiking a fairly long distance...so it is essential that the kit is lightweight and portable.
brilliant! thanks for sharing!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching and leaving feedback.
I have a 24/3row plastic palette. I'm considering 15pans of primary/secondary's warm and cold and 9 convivence pans on the side. The wheel layout looks great.
I really like the round palette. It is great for mixing and identifying complements. However, most of the small portable palettes some in rows.
I’ll subscribe this very useful !
Great. I'm glad you liked it.
I hope you are doing well. You are sooo clear & helpful in your videos!!! I just hope everything is going well since it's been several months ❤
Thank you so much! Haha. Yes...it has been a while since I've put up new content. My summer got VERY busy. I hope to get some new material out soon.
Just what I've been looking for. Lately, i have collected different honey paints. Looking forward to finding out if they rewet when the finish is applied. Fingers crossed! Debs in Montana
I have used M. Graham paint in the past...that contains honey....and didn't have a problem with the pigments reactivating when applying an acrylic UV spray. I wish you the best!
Just whative been looking for.
Awesome! Good to hear!
Thank you Kris for your video and advice on paper Academy /Baohong..Q:please your opinion about the paper "Hanhmade white Deckle Edge blank paper "?
Hi. I'm sorry. I don't have any experience with handmade paper.
Very helpful, Kris. For a lesser expensive pallet, I’ve considered a ceramic model. What are your thoughts on ceramic vs. porcelain?
This might not be accurate, but I have seen those two terms used simultaneously for the same palette. A quick Google search reveals that ceramic and porcelain are similar, but different only in the type of clay used and the temperature at which they are fired. Knowing that, I really don't think you would experience a big difference between the two, when mixing watercolor paint. I'm sure the result is similar. That said, I use a porcelain palette. :-)
@@KrisDeBruineStudio Thank you, Kris!
Good morning can please connect me to the final videos on this piece. For this has been very helpful. Thank you 🙏

@@KrisDeBruineStudio thank you
I have another Hazel Sloan book, think it’s The Essence of Watercolor. She is amazing at capturing light, something I struggle a lot with and envy in other artists. I also find How to Make a Watercolor Paint itself by Nita Engle interesting - she does all kinds of crazy stuff, using spray bottles, lots and lots of water, for all these amazing atmospheric effects….nothing I have ever been ambitious enough to try, but it makes for fun reading.
Thank you so much for these great recommendations. I will have to keep an eye out for those books. :-)
Great pencil set. I have two. But my favorite is the Ohto MS01 or the Rotring 800
Thanks for the recommendations.
Thank you for sharing really helpful information.. I have some of the Neptune brushes and absolutely agree with you as I sometimes struggle with the fact that they don’t spring back to their shape. I appreciate the dome of the rock painting behind you
Thanks for watching. I really like having a variety of brushes, so I can get a variety of effects. I wish you the best in your watercolor journey.
Very well done, thank you
Thank you very much.
Kris I love how you get right to the meat of your video without 5 mins of talk that really adds nothing. I am such a bottom line person, lol.
Hey. Thanks for the encouraging feedback. I agree with you. :-)
The tube of cascade green that you hold for the camera says Raw Sienna not Burnt Umber.
Hmm. I'll have to look into that. Maybe I was mistaken. I made this video quite a few years ago. :-)
What came first the colour or the duck 😂
Haha. Hmmm. Good question. I would guess the duck! :-)
thank you ! this information is very useful
You are welcome!
I don't have a wood cutter and have three 10X16 watercolors on paper. Where do i go to have them cut for me? I would love to mount them on craddle boards to hang them on the wall. Would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.
You can have the boards cut to size at your local DIY store -- like Home Depot. If you are going to make cradle boards, you will also have to purchase and cut the 1x1 boards for the frame that attaches to the back of the board. If you do not have the tools for all of this....it would honestly be much easier to just purchase your cradle boards pre-made. They come in standard sizes. Then...always create your artwork to these sizes. Unfortunately 10x16 is not a standard size. Here is a link to pre-made cradle boards: amzn.to/47nyKCK I hope this helps.
@@KrisDeBruineStudio Unfortunately I am overseas and buying premade is nowhere to be found. I will have to look for someone to construct one for me.
Hi Kris, I did find someone to construct one to fit my painting,. Which wood is best? Say warp proof. I saw an article the other day that plywood is the safest. Could you comment based on your experience.?
I use birch wood. It is smooth and sturdy. It is also fairly inexpensive. However, the main thing you have to be careful of...is that the wood doesn't stain and ruin the painting. There can be chemicals and oils in the wood that can affect the paper.
Thank you for sharing this! I found it very helpful! I've been using Princeton's Velvetouch brushes (which I love), but I'm wanting to try something new. I think the quill brush is exactly what I'm looking for!
I think you'll love it. Have fun!
Thank you so much! BTW the painting of the Dome of the Rock behind you is superb😍👌❤️
Thank you so much
If you twist the pencil you can get different types of lead as well
Thanks for watching and leaving feedback.
I need to make the green gold with colored pencils can I use the same colors as the paint
Sorry. I'm not experienced with colored pencils. I encourage you to give it a try and experiment with different combinations. It will be exciting to see what you come up with.
Except DS has Payne's Grey as well as Paynes Gray 😂😂😂
Yes!!
I think it is a very usefull color but I think ugly color by itself!! Since I try learn watercolor and know this color I discovered why I'm very picky to choose a black ball pen because I like the more black than gray , now I understand that I preffer a warm gray black than cool blue, like the people that tattoo black sleeve and faded so ugly blue gray like paynes gray. I think is important and very usefull but not a fan!!! I feel when I say this is like people condemn white , when I use white I use almost as a gouche to paint white over a color. I write to much.
Thanks for sharing your perspective. I appreciate. Thanks for watching. I think it is fascinating how everyone has different preferences and different colors they are drawn to. We are each created unique in our own way. Have a great day.
Thank you. I enjoy it so much and i did paint along a few times
Awesome. I'm so glad. I hope you enjoyed the process.
Very informative and to the point tutorial 👍
Glad you liked it
This is now $246 in September 0:35 2024 😅
Oh my. The price keeps on going up.
Thanks ❤
You are very welcome. Enjoy!
Glad I own both ! Almost 200 brushes
Wow. You have more brushes than I do. :-)
Yeah paper is the most important item for watercolor, palette with cold, warm and complementary colors, like 6 professional tubes and cheap brush to start, after than some of us are collectors a lot options just to have
Thanks for watching and leaving feedback.
Best video ❤
Thank you very much
Hi Kris! How come the 2 warm yellows shown don’t have “O” as part of their pigment names like the Cad Yellow does? I can see they are leaning warm and orange but the label doesn’t reflect that.
Great question. The "O" in the pigment designation stands for "Orange". Some yellow colors are made with a combination of yellow and orange pigments. However some yellows are made with only PY (Yellow) pigments. It is purely the qualities of the pigments that determine how warm or cool the color is. These numbers are assigned by the Colour Index International. Hope this helps.
@@KrisDeBruineStudio Thank you, it does!
I have had a large print of The Blue Boat hanging over my sofa for many years. Homer’s watercolors are one of the reasons I decided to learn this medium. I have painted an 8”x10” of The Blue Boat. It was a very good learning g experience. Thanks for this video!
That's funny. I also painted the Blue Boat about a year ago. I love that painting and find it very instructive to paint the works of artists that inspire me.
I highly recommend Kilimanjaro paper from Cheap Joe’s, which is significantly cheaper than the expensive brands like Arches, W&N, Fabriano Artistico, and SW. in fact, I’ve used all of those brands, and I think I like Kilimanjaro the best. It lifts spotlessly, it stays wet for ages, and it can handle a metric crap ton of water and pigment. I absolutely love it, and while I do own those other brands, I do feel more comfortable reaching for my Kilimanjaro pad than I do the others, if only because Kilimanjaro is so much more affordable, yet will still give me the results I love when I use expensive paper. And of course, as with all paper, buying the huge 22x30” sheets is your cheapest route. Cheap Joe’s (and I believe also Jerry’s Artarama) has a mix and match of large, hogh quality sheets, and if you buy ten, you get 20% off. Just buy a paper cutter and you’re good to go for awhile. I would also recommend Kaede, a handmade paper from India that uses recycled rag cotton. I know handmade paper can be a bit sketchy, but Kaede paper is actually phenomenal, and I love working on it. I only have the small, paperback sketchbook for now, but plan on ordering single pages in the future once I run out of what I currently have.
Thanks for sharing your recommendation and lots of good information here.
I really love Baohong’s watercolor journals. They’re everything I want in a journal: Sewn pages, lays flat, nice cover, and high quality paper. I painted a witch last night in my cold press journal, and her hat had about four heavy washes of color, with another layer of detail. It barely buckled, and I can easily paint on the next page as well.
Thanks for sharing.
