I bought this set along with one of their gouache and acrylic gouache set at comic con. They’re there every year and were selling 50% off for the con. Very excited to dig into these especially and glad to see they’re liked, I rarely see them mentioned on TH-cam
I hope you enjoy them.
Kris, thank you for reviewing these paints. I have never used these and they are much more in my price range.
You're welcome
I guess we could always combine the black and the white and get different shades of gray and do some value studies… Just so we don’t waste those two colors :-) I very much agree with using better materials, even as a student or else you get turned off to that medium if your materials aren’t cooperating. Great video, I love Holbein paint!
Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment
I just bought that set.
😀
This is a top recommendation. I found the starter set of 6x5ml at Jackson's (UK) for $16 😊. I could get so many wonderful mixes! I might add Burnt Sienna or Umber and then it would be perfect! You are right, goodnpaints make such a difference!
Thanks for sharing!!
I have this same set but I don’t like the color selection very much. I tried doing a painting with just the colors included and I found myself wanting certain color mixes that I couldn’t achieve! Like a “neutral” red that isn’t desaturated or leans too warm or cool and an ultramarine color but I couldn’t mix a nice one :/ I’m also not impressed with the greens very much. I love my Holbein paints a lot but this particular selection of colors I find to be a tad frustrating to work with. Much prefer the 6 tube essentials set by Daniel smith.
Thank you so much for your honest review. I have to admit, I agree with you. I reviewed this set for beginning watercolor artists -- who were taking one of my classes. They wanted an affordable set with lots of colors. So I tried this one. I continue to use Daniel Smith as my go-to watercolor brand. However, some people find it too expensive. Thanks for sharing. :-)
@@KrisDeBruineStudio maybe I just feel more negatively around it because I got mine for a higher price 😂 don’t remember exactly how much but it was around $50 I think
Thank you
You're welcome
Are these prices from the United States? I am in Seattle and that set of Holbein paints 5ml costs $60, and Daniel Smith is more like $15-20/tube. Open stock in my art store Holbein is usually quite a bit more than Daniel Smith, around $25/tube. Maybe it's just gone up.
Yes. I purchased this set for about $25 (in the US) about 9 months ago. Now they are priced at $57. Inflation I guess.
In my opinion they didn’t do the best job on color selection. They missed the mark on the reds. Where’s a quin rose? I’m also a little annoyed at all of the pigment mixes. It seems so unnecessary. A 3 pigment orange…? A three pigment red?
I guess you can’t beat the price for artist grade though
Thanks for sharing. I agree. I still prefer my Daniel Smith single pigment paints. But this is an affordable set.
This set is $55 now😢
Oh bummer....inflation.
Don't like Holbein.too many hues for what so called artist grade paints.sorry my opinion
Yep. I hear you. I was just looking for an affordable option for my students who can't afford Daniel Smith or others. I have students who couldn't afford my class otherwise. ☹️
