The Art of Jazz Drum Solo - Max Roach's St Thomas - Transcribed & Played
Welcome to an in-depth look at one of one of the most famous jazz drum solos in history! In this video, we explore Max Roach's virtuoso solo on Sonny Rollins' "St. Thomas". For this video, I analyzed Max Roach's solo on "St. Thomas" note for note. The transcription covers the complete solo and a bit more, showing Roach's patterns, ideas and his innovative use of the drums. I have also tried to copy the sounds and guess at the techniques in my performance, but it can only be an interpretation and cannot claim to be absolutely accurate.
"St. Thomas" is one of the most famous instrumentals in American jazz and was originally popularized by tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins. Although Rollins is commonly credited as the composer, the origins of the piece are deeply rooted in traditional folk music. It is based on the Bahamian folk song "Sponger Money" and the English folk song "The Lincolnshire Poacher". Over time, "The Lincolnshire Poacher" developed into a children's song in the Virgin Islands, which Rollins' mother used to sing to him as a child.
"St. Thomas" gained great popularity when it was featured on Rollins' 1956 album Saxophone Colossus. In 1956, Rollins led a quartet session with Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass and Max Roach on drums - a collaboration that would produce the album Saxophone Colossus. This album marked an important phase in Rollins' career.
Max Roach's drumming on "St. Thomas" is a prime example of his innovative approach. Roach was a pioneer of drumming, and his techniques and playing styles helped to redefine the role of the drummer in jazz and music in general. He introduced a more interactive and musical way of playing, where the drummer is not just an accompanist, but an integral part of the melodic and harmonic structure of the music.
In "St. Thomas", Roach's solo demonstrates his ability to combine complex rhythms with melodic phrasing. His use of space, dynamics and sounds, among other things, creates a solo that is both technically impressive and musically captivating. Studying Roach's playing in "St. Thomas" provides invaluable insight and inspiration.

I like to keep this performance as original as possible to the studio recording in terms of playing. The superimposed sheet music is available for free download to subscribers of my site www.deinschlagzeuglehrer.de. The transcription is written with the notation program Finale. 🎵
I recorded in Ableton Live with two Beyerdynamic MC-930, a Beyerdynamic TG D50 on the bass drum and a Beyerdynamic M 201 TG on the snare drum. 🎙️

      Nice to hear if my transcription can help. But please remember, the transcription is a transcription of a musical event, which is due to the moment of the event. If you play with a band, the circumstances will most likely change and you will have to adapt your playing. A transcription is not a composition! :-) Much success!!! Let me know how it went.

    Thanks, very helpful video! I've been trying to get a closer look at how the hi hat is used in swing jazz because I'm looking at learning on an electronic drum set (I live in an apartment) and I'm concerned that most of them don't seem to allow for the half-open position. This was the clearest explanation I've been able to find. I do have some trouble with catching everything you're saying - not sure whether it's my lack of familiarity with your accent (I'm mainly used to American English) or that some words are spoken more softly and not picked up clearly by the mic. It would help if there was a transcript available. But the good explanation was worth the extra effort on my end. The jazz drummer who first sparked my interest and enjoyment of swing drumming was local boy Les Harris, Jr. Back when I was a high school student in the New England area, he played with an American east coast vocal quartet called The Ritz. They had a terrific rhythm section as well as great vocals. I caught their concerts whenever I could and found him riveting to watch... just so completely physically at ease and synched into the sound with his whole body, it was almost like a dance.

    • @JazzDrummersCorner

      Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you found the video helpful. Learning jazz on an electronic drum set can be challenging, especially with the hi-hat's half-open position, but keep at it! Even the expensive electronic modules only reproduce a few nuances between closed and open on the hi-hats. Unfortunately, the cheaper ones only offer closed, semi-open or open (even this is not obligatory), so depending on which module you use, I recommend that you try using the playing feel. If you still need help with this, please take a look at my video "From Stroke to Groove": th-cam.com/video/q33PbfPcFTM/w-d-xo.html. I appreciate your feedback about my accent.I'll adda ranscript to this video. Since I am not a native speaker of English, I may not pronounce some words or phrases correctly. Sorry for that! Les Harris, Jr. sounds like an incredible drummer. It's great to hear how his performances inspired you. Watching a drummer who is so connected to the music is always inspiring. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

      @@JazzDrummersCorner Thanks, I'll check out the second video! I did at least manage to find a lower-end set that can (theoretically) play the half-open sound (grabbed a secondhand Alesis Nitro Mesh)... my wallet just won't stretch to a high-end set right now, but it's a place to start and I'm pretty patient about learning to use less-than-stellar equipment to its best advantage - I play several other instruments, and this is purely for fun, so I can take my time to experiment and see what's possible. :) The transcript is appreciated, but no apologies needed; you speak a non-native language fluently enough to teach in it, which is better than I can do! And just for your enjoyment, here's a fun little clip of Les Harris, Jr. and his dad Les Harris, Sr. playfully trading riffs on the drums: th-cam.com/video/2uO0TzQikHg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=pV5312fnfhm2gExs

      I'm sorry to hear that you're upset and that what you've heard doesn't match your expectations, although I must admit that I find your upset somewhat over the top because I've assigned each note its meaning. are you concerned with the orchestration of the toms, are you concerned with the hand placement used? Funnily enough, I'm currently working on a revision of St. Thomas and I'm thinking about the tom distribution in particular. As for the original way the song was played, it can sometimes be difficult to determine exactly how it was played, especially on older recordings where the sound quality is sometimes not up to today's standards. Although I strive to faithfully reproduce what is played, there may be deviations from the original performance due to personal interpretations or limitations in the accuracy of the transcription.I would be delighted to hear what your interpretation of St. Thomas is. well, perhaps you can enlighten us. since you seem to know how it was played by max, why would you even be watching this video and cause yourself to be "very upset?" common, how about giving props. the performance is relaxed, creative, and technically excellent. as he said in his comment, it's not easy to analyze every single nuance of a recording that was down on vinyl 70 years ago. bottom line, i loved it. keep up the great work.

    11:07 Hallo!

    Can I get the transcripts in PDF and where can I find the complete videos?

    • @JazzDrummersCorner

      I'm sorry, but due to copyright reasons, I'm currently unable to provide the transcripts in PDF format. I hope you still find the videos helpful! I do not currently have a complete transcription of the song available. My aim with transcriptions is to give an impression of what was played in the original recording, to capture the essence of the music and then leave room for personal interpretation. I am actively working on the transcription of the solo part of the song and would like to finish it soon. As soon as it is ready, I will share it with you and anyone else who is interested. Thank you for your patience and understanding. I hope you still find the videos helpful!

    • @JazzDrummersCorner

      @ozdenhuseyin3691 I would like to ask you to tell us all, and especially him, what you think is right so that we can all benefit and everyone can form their own opinion. Ultimately, many paths lead to the same goal and none of us will become a second Max Roach. And now one more question, is there always only one right or wrong, especially in music?

    still quite loud on the snare imo...maybe if the snare is dampened more the high end would be reduced 👍🏻

    • @JazzDrummersCorner

      Thanks for your feedback! You're right, of course, a damped snare drum reduces the overtones or I could have played the snare a little quieter. The recording has also not been edited so as not to manipulate the result. Thanks again for taking the time to comment.
