The path to the perfect jazz swing pattern - from stroke to groove

Welcome to the world of jazz drumming! This video is about my philosophy on the technical realization of the signature swing pattern, the heart of jazz drumming. I'll take you on a journey to master this key element of jazz and give it the perfect drive.
The swing pattern is not only at the heart of many jazz pieces, it is also the most constant element in jazz drumming. Find out why this element lays the foundation for the entire groove and the driving pulse it creates in jazz music.
I explain why the quarter notes are the decisive interface to the bassists and how you can bring drive to your swing through dynamic playing.
Step by step, I'll guide you through the necessary stroke techniques such as full stroke, downstroke and upstroke. Discover how a good stroke technique makes the swing pattern swing. Three principles of movement help to play the quarter notes evenly and make the transitions smooth.
We practise on the pad and the ride cymbal to internalize the movement sequences. Use the exercises to improve your playing and achieve that swing feeling.

Hey man! Huge fan of your videos. I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on Philly joe Jones’s Latin groove on stablemates. Specifically the one he plays on his drums around the world record or the one off of Wes Montgomery and milt Jackson’s record bags meets Wes. I’d like to learn the groove using sticks as I already know a sort of variation with brushes.
