Oulton Park - Mini R56 JCW (18.11.23)
November Oulton park with MSVT. Great day with plenty of trouble free sessions. The track was wet/ greasy all day, Druids was especially hairy. Had the car on worn Michelin PS4's all day, which were hanging on surprisingly well.
This was a morning session following Mike (Silver 182), Matty (White Megane), Jams (Red 197), trying to catch the GR Yaris.

First wet track day at Anglesey Trac Mon. Great day with very few red flags and the car performed flawlessly. The track was very wet in the morning with standing water in places. A dry but greasy line appeared in the afternoon. Didn't manage to get on the semi slicks but Pilot Sport 4's performed extremely well all day considering they are a road tyre.

Make sure you have a decent geometry set up or you’ll find certain sections of Anglesey painful (rocket in/ out for example) with the standard geo. I run -2 degrees camber (the max my top mounts will allow) and parallel toe at the front. -1.5 degree of camber at the rear. Still very conservative but much nicer to throw into a corner than standard. If (when) the clutch gives up I’de like to fit a proper mechanical diff too which would make a huge difference

      @@Richard1637 awesome, it’s something I need before taking it on track, how do you find the ds1.11 on the road from cold? I have run ds2500 previously on other cars and found them a good all rounder! Are you running standard or braided lines?

    • @Richard1637

      @@jamesdamien121 standard lines, ds1.11 are fine from cold but do squeal. I highly recommend updated rear pads too since the “e-diff” in the JCWs just destroys oem rears.

    Hey Richard, love the vid. Lovely driving too. I noticed the oil pressure and temp data and read in another comment that you were running those off the adapter plate? Would you mind to share a bit more please? I’m currently trying to fit an oil cooler + sensors myself. Happy to purchase a full solution from yourself if you offer that. Cheers!

      Thanks Mathieu, I used the HEL performance sandwich plate with a 13 row Setrab oil cooler and AN-10 fittings/ lines. You can just about fit the 13 row oil cooler under the upper grille with minimal trimming. Any bigger (16 row+) and you'll need to either cut the crash bar and/or grille. Even with the 13 row unit it's a very tight fit and routing the lines is a pain due to the lack of available space. I also included an inline thermostat, but if it's a track only car or you live in a warmer climate (than the UK) I would personally not bother. The HEL sandwich plate has an M10 plug which accepts a temperature sensor, I used a BOSCH NTC part. The tricky part is converting this variable resistance into a meaningful temperature reading, you need to match the response profile (found on the data sheet) to a temperature, but the response isn't linear. I ended up linearising the response, converting to a temperature and then logging. For the oil pressure, you need to tap into the car's already present pressure switch. Note, this is simply an ON/OFF 'switch' which triggers a warning when pressure drops below a threshold (say 10psi for example). I bought a T piece which allowed me to keep the standard pressure switch and also run a 0-150psi sensor from the same feed. This is a bit easier to decode than the temperature, as it's an active sensor and output is linear with pressure. Units such as this: www.demon-tweeks.com/uk/innovate-motorsports-mtx-d-oil-pressure-temperature-gauge-inn3913/ Are be a hassle free solution if you aren't bothered about logging the data.

      @@Richard1637 Hey Richard, thanks for such detailed answer. I think I'm on a very similar path to what you already have as I was looking at the HEL Performance Oil cooler with thermostat as I do live in the UK aha. Only recently did I notice some of the sandwhich plates have plugs to route a sensor. But I thought there were two plugs (pressure+temp), did yours only have one? I also have a Craven Speed T line adapter to mount the pressure switch and other sensors if the sandwhich plate isn't enough. Regarding the gauge, I was looking at an AEM Electronics X series one but the one you sent is even better as a 2 in 1 solution! So cheers for that! Lastly and probably most important, I almost pulled the trigger on a 19 row cooler until you said 13 row is a tight fit. Do you have social media or Instagram or something that I could reach out to you on by any chance? It's almost impossible to find photos of people who have done this on their car on a bigger cooler.. Thank you! Matt

    How do you get all the data like oil temp and coolant temp usw? I also have a Mini r56 JCW and I cannot find a way to get the data 😅

    • @Richard1637
      @Richard1637 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I made my own data logger which pulls most of the information from the OBD port (standard parameter ID's). The oil temperature and pressure are a bit more involved. I fitted an external front mount oil cooler with temperature and pressure sensors on the adapter plate. I then broadcast this information over the CAN bus and log in the same manner as the standard PID's. Mini R56 do not have an oil temperature sensor as standard (at least the UK models). Loggers which claim to be able to do this are using a software based estimate which is a function of other parameters.

    • @Richard1637
      @Richard1637 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! It’s a homemade data logger using an STM32 and custom PCB. I pull most of the information straight off the CAN bus via the OBD socket. For the oil temp and pressure I added my own sensors as part of the oil cooler install which I send out over custom PID addresses and log in the same manner. I write to the SD card via SPI so I’m limited to around 10Hz which is fine for visual overlays like this (the STM32F103 is lacking an SDIO peripheral). I then use race render to stitch the videos/ data together.

      Both cars similar spec, R53 reduced pulley, exhaust, FMIC, FMOC, remap etc. It was the better car through the corners (or was certainly being driven better), the r56 had the legs in the straights.

Engine wise: airtec FMIC, setrab oil cooler, panel filter (standard box), decat, colder plugs and remap to ~265hp Safety devices half cage, meisterR CRD, rear adjustable control arms with a decent geo setup and 595 RSR’s. Also got a set of sparco evo seats which transformed the driving feel over the stock mini seats.
