I once read an interesting story where the things that happened in a chapter are written twice in two different POVs. It was very a very interesting experience because you were excited to find out how the other character perceived the events etc.
I'm writing a third person rotating, and my biggest issue is STICKING to the 1 chapter per switch rhythm I've held for most of it till now! You know? Like, I feel like character A needs more time to figure out something, but it's time to switch to character B, and it's frustrating me. Good vid, it did help a bit
I usually write with third person limited but occasionally break it up to write in third person rotating. I usually like to focus on just one character at a time to delve into their arc, thoughts, etc. Unrelated, but I really love your aesthetic. So colorful *_*
Third person limited is definitely underrated, I think. I've written some oneshots in limited POV, but someday would love to write a longfic in it. I've always preferred to use the dramatic irony of multiple POVs over the mystery of limited POVs, but it'll be nice to challenge myself by doing something new.
i’ll be honest when i first started writing fanfic i always wrote in second person which was/is considered cringe but me n my friends loved it at the time. the thing is it a difficult way to write 😂 i’m trying to figure out what pov my current fic idea should be in so thank you for posting this miniseries
I usually default to third person limited or rotating. My main long fic is rotating while my one shot is limited. I have one fic that utilizes both 1st and 2nd pov but I’ll save that so I have a comment for the next video lol ^^
Lovely to hear from you again~! Rotating is what I'm using for my current longfic and limited is my preferred choice for oneshots too. I especially like using the POV of an "outsider" to the relationship/friendship being focused on, especially if it's a dynamic that tends to be misunderstood in fandom.
one of my favourite things to do is 3rd person rotating, but instead of having it clearly defined like one chapter = one character's pov, i love doing oneshots that just kinda drift slowly between characters. it'll start off in one person's head, then move to narrating dialogue or other things that are happening in a bit more of a neutral way, then drift to another character's actions and then thoughts in response. it's probably not the way you're "supposed" to do it, but to me it's just super fun to write, so why not?
@@goblinducky-huzzah i'm so happy you find it interesting! it's something that is built gradually throughout a whole fic, but here, have some short lines from a recent fic of mine, moving from the narration of a character named Hailey to one named Jay: (also, sidenote, an easy cheat way to do this is separate the characters for a bit, and then choose which one for the story to follow) beginning - She grins. Hours ago, she’d been worried about never hearing that laugh again. middle - She would know her way around his apartment blind, and it means Jay gets to enjoy the sight of her small frame, half-covered in blankets, clumsily heading for his couch. end - Jay watches her silhouette leave. Sweet dreams, he thinks, hoping it’ll be true for her at least.
This was really helpful. It's interesting to look at this from bilingual perspective. In Russian fanfiction it's pretty common to use first POV but it's feels weird to read second POV. Just opposite of English. I prefer using second POV when writing in English. It gives really good immersion and honestly feels good to read. I think of creating self insert and still using second POV with warning at the beginning. Because I didn't read a lot if any first POV in English it feels unnatural to write like this. Anyway thank you for the video. Have a nice day!
Nice to see another comment from you! Really interesting to see how POV styles and preferences compare between Russian and English. I think first person has a negative association with YA fiction and blank slates for the readers to project onto or for the author to insert themselves, but in the hands of a master, it can be so immersive and help characterise the POV character in such an interesting way.
i feel like 3rd person omniscient is by far the most challenging perspective to write from. If you disclose too much information, the story becomes rather dull, yet it's really hard to decide which information to reveal and which to obscure. The head-hopping issue can be mitigated by opting for a fly-on-the-wall approach but again, that makes for a rather boring story and very clinical narration (stories that are character-driven are most interesting to me). so yeah, i'm not gonna use this POV any time soon is what i'm tryna say here.
but yeah, playing around with different POVs is super fun. I'm thinking about a concept for a fic right now where I'd switch from 3rd person limited to 1st person perspective. the desired effect would be that this second POV character is so powerful and self-absorbed that the whole POV switches for him. buuut i'm not sure if i'd be able to pull this off without it being too jarring (besides, i don't really have a grip on that characters "voice" yet) so for now it's just an ambitious idea inside my head.
I actually really like first person……………… 😮 I really like stories where characters reflect on the past, like saying “I was only a kid back then, and I didn't know any better.” I don't know what it's called, but it's feels very confessional. I also like this in fic ahaha Super unpopular. Not a fan when first person is in the present tense though… but I can be swayed if the story is really really good ;) I like third person limited too, the most honestly. Third person rotating isn't as interesting, but that's cute too. I feel more immersed in the story when there is the not knowing what the other character is thinking (especially since I only read non-poly romance fic). Third person omniscient simply is not a good choice for romantic fic TO ME (not hating on anyone else who likes it, everyone is free to write as they wish). It's just not immersive enough! I don't get that stupid smile on my face when something cute happens lol!! Maybe I just haven't found one written very well. But I don't tend to encounter this point of view too often, and I think that Has to do with the fact that my fandoms are older, maybe. Third person omniscient that is actually the head hopping thing is so annoying… but we all start somewhere :) Currently I am writing a third person/first person fic (narrator is telling someone else's story). I mean, that's what I was writing…. I will hopefully get back to it when I feel better if I get better
Can't say I like second person… but that's because I don't wanna imagine myself in romantic relationships with characters XD that being said I think it gets too much hate :( Live and let live, right????? Some people can be so mean!
@@elag5301 First person does seem to be a bit of aan overhated icon honestly, because it can hit really well if used correctly. At the same time, I do get why it can often be grating, but we'll cover that next video 😉
I do prefer third person because its more versatile. I can use multiple POVs to show multiple sides of a conflict or drum up dramatic irony. While I do think first person can be done well, it just isn't suited to my favourite elements of storytelling.
I have read the Third-Person Rotating point of view before and really enjoyed it when I read Rick Riordan's "Heroes of Olympus" series for the first time. Originally I just picked up for something going on in school but ended up just getting hooked and have absolutely loved the series. Makes me want to attempt it in the future because it is such a good concept to work with.
@@CoraMaria I watched your video on 1st and 2nd person POV and realized I got that wrong but either way I still feel like it was done well. First person rotation not the third person
Your hair and the way you dress is honestly how I strive to look. I love the colorful outfits!!!❤
Aww thanks, lovely!

Have you written in any of these POVs before? Which one do you think your next project will be in? I'd love to know~! 💖
My first two were first person since I wanted to get really into character studies but I switched to third person rotating after getting on my feet.

I don't like writing first person because I worry I use the word 'I' too much. In third I can interchange pronouns with the character's name XD
Yep that's the beauty of third person haha
