ATTACK on McKinsey: Ex-McKinsey reacts to @moreperfectunion roasting the #1 consulting firm
It has just happened again: The US Initiative @moreperfectunion delivers a scathing attack on McKinsey & Company and its alleged wrongdoings. In the reportage, investigative journalist Gabriella Spielberg leads through 10 well-known McKinsey scandals, for which the world’s leading management consulting firm has already been exposed in the McKinsey scandal book “When McKinsey Comes To Town” and by John Oliver in his famous "Last Week Tonight" edition on McKinsey. For this reportage, More Perfect Union’s reporter interviews the “When McKinsey Comes To Town” author Michael Forsythe as well as whistleblower and ex-McKinsey consultant Garrison Lovely.
I find that this documentary again is one-sided, so that I add my perspective based on my five working years at McKinsey & Company and my experience as an independent management adviser. I estimate the number of consultings project delivers in 2024 and contrast it with McKinsey’s scandal projects, address More Perfect Union’s question what consultants actually do and reveal McKinsey’s true actions in-between cost-cutting and pro bono projects. I also address in my consulting satire what would happen if McKinsey got banned, and I comment on Garrison Lovely’s whistleblower reports in the two McKinsey whistleblower articles by the Nation (“Confessions of a McKinsey Whistleblower”) and in Jacobin (“McKinsey Is Ultraprestigious. It’s Also a Blight on the World”).
Lastly, in this reaction video to More Perfect Union’s blast at McKinsey, I conclude what this means for your business and consulting careers.

    I appreciate the nuance you provide in this video. I don't know if I agree with all of your points, but I genuinely respect how you lay out your perspective. Thank you very much for your nuanced comment. We live in an increasingly polarized world, where we are made to believe that either Black Or White were true (aka the "radical left" versus "neocapitalism"). The truth very often lies in the middle. Yes, my goal indeed has been to be mindful with overly flat conclusions. I love being a consultant, which role I define for myself as serving my clients on problems they cannot solve themselves, and offering help and previously unconsidered solutions on complex matters. That is pretty cool! And of course, we have ethical choices to make in every job. The consultant who lacks any morale in their profit-maximizing recommendations. The doctor who executes unnecessary surgeries to increase their income. The job applicant who tunes their credentials to create an unfair advantage over their peers. Making McKinsey the scapegoat of all failings of this world - beyond condemning McKinsey's proven failings for good reason - I am afraid is too simple!

    • @YOUinConsulting
      @YOUinConsulting 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Bro not sure I am biased - it is just that I have been working in the consulting industry for more than a decade, and half of the time for McKinsey. So I believe I am knowledgable, but also have enough distance by now to aim for a judgement. I wholeheartedly agree with you (and so so in my videos) that the projects were a couple of McKinsey consultants have sacrificed moral and company values for money at ANY cost are shameful, horrifying and to be condemned. What I don’t agree with is the belief that based on the 10+ horror projects it could be concluded that all of the 45.000 McKinsey employees and hundred-thousands of consulting projects McKinsey has delivered were evil. Quite the opposite, many McKinsey consultants are (surprisingly!?) idealistic, and most projects probably nobody even cares about (because they are comparatively banal).

    Pro-bono work and charity by corporations are used as a mean to clean up their image and not because they feel like doing free work to better the world. I know that it is painful to admit that you worked at a company that overall has been bad for humanity. What i don't understand is that if mckinsey helped fuel the opioid crisis to increase sales , the chances that they have done even more horrible things in pursuit of profit is very high. Why would you give them the benefit of doubt ?

    • @YOUinConsulting
      @YOUinConsulting 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I am afraid it's not that straightforward. The pro bono project I worked on and talk about in the video (understanding the pathways of ocean plastics leakage and reduce it) took place upon the very personal initiative of the initiating project manager, who was passionate to find ways for cleaning up our waterways. By the time I joined the project, McKinsey had managed to forge a coalition of rather different clients (the American NGO Ocean Conservancy, and the American Chemistry Council, partially sponsoring the project and representing the interests of plastics producers). McKinsey subsidized the project as well by working at heavily reduced fees (which also was a reason why I had to work my ass off...). The project manager left McKinsey after the project and went on to Indonesia for further local trial works on how to reduce plastics entries. While I do mind impactless greenwashing, I do not mind if people/companies do things supporting a good cause and THEN also talk about it. However, as far as I can tell, the pro bono work McKinsey (occasionally) does is impactful (well, most McKinsey’a work is impactful). To address your last question, McKinsey has significantly exacerbated the US opioid crisis by educating its client, Purdue Pharma, on how to target doctors who were more likely to increase prescriptions of the drug. McKinsey even continued doing so at a time when it had already been obvious that the heavily addictive drug (oxycontin) caused huge health problems in the population. McKinsey has fired the responsible Senior Partners and I believe it is the first time ever that McKinsey has even come under criminal investigation. It has been horrible, if you want to understand it better, it is meticulously described in “When McKinsey Comes to Town”, pp. 130ff.

    • @ukweli1786
      @ukweli1786 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@YOUinConsulting I am well aware of mckinsey role in the opioid crisis , i was not sure you were aware you look crazy defending a company that did that. This will not age well , i am sure we only know the tip of the iceberg as to all the illegal things mckinsey did. Secondly greenwashing is an attempt to distract from all the negative stories about mckinsey by trying to clean up their image , this allows nefarious companies to operate longer than they would have been permitted to . Greenwashing and hiring great pr companies is how bad companies keep getting away with doing illegal and ethically dubious things. I'm sorry you worked for an evil company and you cannot come to terms with it . Opioid crisis , worsening the conditions in prison industrial complex. Mckinsey is a net negative to humanity. Last example of mckinsey's evilness "The corporate consulting firm reported bogus numbers and flailed in a project at Rikers Island. Today, assaults and other attacks there are up almost 50%."

  • @lost-prototype
    @lost-prototype 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Comparing the total number of "good" vs "bad" projects misses the point Oliver was making. This isn't a blow by blow. Your bell curve doesn't represent the *impact* of the bad projects. It would look very different if you plotted for "number of lives ruined" vs. "total number of projects". Although, did anyone really expect anything different from this reaction video?

    • @YOUinConsulting
      @YOUinConsulting 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey, thank you for your comment. I understand your line of reasoning. I indeed tried to discuss the number of projects, not yet their impact. How do you know though that good projects touch fewer lives? Whatever McKinsey touches, their impact usually is large, since they operate on a very strong scale. I have run another analysis suggesting that McKinsey most probably is not systematically evil - judged by the sheer number of projects it accomplishes annually. It is part of a reaction video published today to a brandnew "McKinsey bashing" video published a few days ago, you might be interested in both: th-cam.com/video/PfGNdurMQpc/w-d-xo.html Finally, on your last comment: I do not have any ties with McKinsey anymore, but present my private views that are indeed based on my professional experience. My aim is not to defend McKinsey for any s*** or damage done, but do provide a differentiated perspective on McKinsey and my industry that I know inside-out.

    • @lost-prototype
      @lost-prototype 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@YOUinConsulting - What you're saying is a classic case of bothsideism. You're trying to act like the bad hasn't happened to reset the conversation in the name of "perspective". The perspective is already there. We got it from John Oliver when he explained to us that these firms are at the root of a lot of evil. It doesn't stop at just one either. When you look at right wing political meddling and profiteering, these kinds of firms are always at the ready to produce doctored reports and press release ready content to manufacture a point. It doesn't matter whether you're associated with anyone anymore. You're just trying to protect your nest egg which is a space that is habituated to and far too casual with evil.

    Hi, I have a question because I wanted to do an MBA. I am Italian and I am on my way to become a US citizen Would it make sense to make an MBA to access the US market as a first generation US immigrant to enter top tier consulting? Are Americans and US offices open to first gen immigrants, or are they like European offices where in general you stay in the country where you were borned? (I really don’t want to return to Italy and I can’t since I did not graduate from Bocconi, and entry level salaries at McKinsey are 40k/year gross with COL in Milan comparable to LA)

      Hi, interesting question! Yes, generally the US offices hire foreigners, and if you will be a US citizen and do not need a visa, it of course makes everything easier. In your individual case, I believe it indeed may make sense to consider doing an MBA to obtain the "US education imprint" and get access to the Schools' networks that are designed for a smooth entry into MBB and other top companies. • @YOUinConsulting
      @YOUinConsulting 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Sure, you are referring to question 10 at minute 36:42. The Operations condition says: "Operations is scheduled with the same difference from sales as it is from R&D". Given the first 3 slots are taken already, Operations has to come fourth (otherwise, it would be impossible to have the Operations workshop be equidistant to two other workshops). Then Operations is two slots away from sales, so it must also be two slots away from R&D. For this reason, R&D must take place as the last workshop, and the remaining slot no 5 is assigned to Marketing. Clear now?

    • @YOUinConsulting

      Hi! You refer to question 2 at 18:47, right? In order to solve for C, you need to plug in the solutions for A, B and D into the fourth equation, hence: 250.000 = (4xC) + (4xC - 92.200) + C + (C + 4200). This equals to 250.000 = 10xC - 88.000. Now, you solve for C and obtain C = 33800. Is it clear now?

I did notice a small correction @ 24:37, please correct me if I'm wrong! - You mentioned Animal 3 will divide its calories needed between B and C, so 4,500 / 2 should be 2,250, however the slide shows 2,750? But you say 2,250 in your narration so no harm done!

      I appreciate your attention to detail, but... I think you are wrong on this one 😃 Animal 3 will divide its hunger between producers B and C, hence the calories provided by both producers diminish by 2250. The slide then shows their remaining calories provided, which are 5000 - 2250 = 2750 🙂 Agree?

    • @YOUinConsulting
      @YOUinConsulting 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! Next time, kindly add question number / video minute for reference 🙂 But I got ya, your question is about question no 1/13 at 16:42. I am afraid your calculation is not correct. The task states that in 2021, the company had 10% fewer customers than in 2020. Equivalently, this means that the number of 2021 customers amounts to 90% of 2020 customers. In order to compute the number of 2020 customers from the given number of 72.000 customers in 2021, you need to multiply by the reciprocal value: 1/90%, or 1/0,9, or 10/9 (as it is written in my solution). When applying a percentage reduction in one direction, in order to return to the original number, you always have to apply the reciprocal value. For instance, if you increase 100 by 10% (or multiply by 1,1), it yields you 110. If you then again (wrongly) reduce by 10%, you land at 99 instead of 100. Instead you have to multiply by reciprocal value 1/1,1=10/11 to return to 100. If you are still unclear, take a look at my percentage calculation recap video 🙂

      I am not sure which scenario you refer to. In the base scenario at 16:01, animal 2 has animal 1 as the only food source. Later at 25:27, it indeed can prey on animals 1 and 3. However, game rule #2 at 14:19 prescribes that those animals that provide the highest amount of calories are eaten first, hence animal 3. Does this answer your question?

      @@YOUinConsulting Well, there two aspects that made feel that way: 1. Structure: especially the fact the he chose FoodCo as the Company and not Smilk. Generally, when being asked to assess factors of a market to client I tend to focus mainly in the market (size, growth, competitive landscape) company (profitability, business model and value proposition), synergies (especially important when a big conglomerate buys a smaller and similar business) and risks & capabilities (Financial capabilities of the acquiring company, personal fit for the acquiring company and the risk of cannibalisation because the businesses are similar ). However, when looking at your structure, off course it's more thorough than what I wrote, but it would just take me too much (2 minutes just for the writing). How'd you recommend delivering your structure to the interviewer? 2. Eric's good performance: overall, Eric is very creative, shows great presence and objective driven. I was really impressed by his interview and thought it might me a little pre-scripted😅

      @YOUinConsulting Two things made me feel that way while watching the video: 1. His structure: Generally, when assessing whether to acquire a smaller, similar business, I consider factors like: Market (size & growth, market shares, and current offerings), Company, the acquired one! (profitability, business model, value proposition), synergies (revenue and cost synergies), and risks & capabilities (cannibalization, skills of the client, investment cost). I was confused by his narrow structure, especially focusing on the client's company. After seeing your suggested structure, I realized I might have been correct. However, while your structure is MECE, I can't see how I'd manage to pull it of during an interview-just the writing would take me 2 minutes😅. 2. Eric's performance: Eric is a very strong candidate. I was impressed by his case leadership skills and presence. At times, however, the whole situation seemed somewhat unrealistic and pre-scripted.

    Just finished the game! I noticed a couple of inconsistencies: 1. In the tutorial, they only let you see the first producer. 2. There are only two feathers available, not four. It seems like there should be two lines for location characteristics, but there's only one line with two options: depth and temperature. I only had two minutes left, so I focused on delivering the ecosystem. However, I checked back later and realized I placed one wrong animal, that made the whole ecosystem not sustainable. Do you think I can still get an interview?

    • @YOUinConsulting
      @YOUinConsulting 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi there! I don't think there are any inconsistencies 🙂: 1. Yes, during the tutorial time you can only take down those (limited) information that are already displayed to you. 2. What do you mean by "feathers" - you are referring to the location parameters, right? You probably played the coral reef scenario, in which indeed only depth and temperature appear. In the mountain reef scenario, you would additionally face wind speed and PH range. Hmm, if you took so much time and sincerely believe you logged in unsustainable food chain, then I am afraid it might be unlikely you will pass the PSG. However, wait it out - some candidates wake up to unexpected surprises 🙂 Good luck, Jack

For the Redrock Study, a number of different scenarios are in play, and I would not rule out that each scenario comes with a pool of questions to draw from to avoid that candidates have the exactly same experience. I am not sure to what extent the parameter values are randomized in the Redrock Study. The gist: Do not try to learn the question by heart. Instead, understand the strategies to solve the games.
