  • Big 4 vs MBB - or Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers, EY and KPMG versus McKinsey, BCG or Bain. All companies brand themselves as consulting firms and are popular employers. However, what do these companies have in common and how are they different from each other? And is it a good idea to join a Big 4 company as an employee or an intern to later join McKinsey, BCG or Bain? In this video, I lead you through the consulting jungle to explore with you: Who is the consulting jungle king?
This video I start with a comparison of McKinsey versus Deloitte, PwC, EY and KPMG and share with you some of their KPIs in a way that I believe many of you have not yet seen before… so that you can decide for yourself who may be the “real” consulting jungle king!
I then explain you how the core service offering of the Big 4 companies - namely auditing, tax optimization and business valuation - actually significantly differs from the services offered by the MBB top management consulting firms, and how this affects the companies` profitability - and your salary 😉
Before I worked for McKinsey for five years as a consultant and project manager, I also interned with one of the Big 4 companies and got a first-hand impression of how it is to work for the Big 4 companies. In the last part of the video, I first share key insights from my own Big 4 work experience with you and how this may impact your own consulting career planning. Finally, I share with you my advice on whether it is a good idea to gain work experience at a Big 4 company as an employee or as an intern to prepare a later transition towards McKinsey, BCG or Bain.

Hi all, I can see (also from some DMs I have received since publishing this video) that there is quite some interest in the discussion on Big4 vs MBB. The main point of my video is not to say "working at Big4 is bad", but to alert you that IMHO it is not a good strategy to join Big4 as a preparatory step for later joining an MBB consulting firm.
Still, there are cases of course where former Big4 employees (Big4 interns, like me 😉) have managed to get into MBB. If you are one of them - i.e. have worked at a Big4 company as a full-time employee and later joined MBB, if you were willing to share your experience on how you did that (i.e. your strategy/approach), I would be very happy to host you on my channel for an interview! Please get in touch 🙂

    That's a great video i found today.
As a 2.7-year experienced analyst at Big4 i always wonder do i really need to do Mba or mca as i joined Big4 right after undergraduation in Bsc computer science.
Could you please help me clear out my confusion here

Hi there! Thank you for your kind words of appreciation. Based on what you say (BSc in Computer Science, experienced Big4 Professional), you certainly do not need an executive MBA - kindly check my video on this topic here: th-cam.com/video/8ZUpHPkj9bg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=5KNNLVht885gJWu7 However, a "normal" Master (in Computer Applications) could benefit you for your further career, since sometimes an advanced degree opens up some doors higher up in your career. I hope this makes sense to you!

Please help me confirm this opinion: Although past jobs in auditing/tax lines are Big4 may be disregarded by MBB, positions as Business Analyst or Consultant may be valuable in the eyes of MBB employers.

Hi Chi! I'd never say that Big4 work experience would get "disregarded" by MBB - this language is far too strong for me! Yes, I would second generally what you say: Working in the consulting arm of a Big4 company will make your profile more interesting than a track record in auditing/tax, since your consulting work experience is more relevant to MBB than auditing/tax work, which essentially are more routine activities. Still, I would not intern with Big4/Consulting for the purpose of preparing the entry into MBB, and whatever you have done inside a Big4 company, moving from Big4 to MBB will remain an uphill battle. I hope this answers your question to your satisfaction 🙂

@@YOUinConsulting I got your points now. it's all about the competition. I think looking into what MBB really need is an essential part in building a strategy to enter MBB. For example, a candidate may learn about what projects/industries McKinsey recently has and try to gain experiences in similar projects in the same industries. He may even become an employee of the company that is the client of McKinsey and participate in the project where McKinsey provides services. This requres intensive networking though.

@@chicuongnguyen9742 Yes, it is about competition, and a Big4 background usually does not make you stand out significantly from the pool of applicants (since Big4 companies are significantly larger than MBB in terms of manpower). Building up expertise at MBB client companies through interning e.g., in large industrial corporations contributes to an interesting profile. Hiring full-time employees from client companies happens less often, but I have indeed seen it happen, too. Often, experienced hires apply proactively 🙂
