I love watches but was always intimidated by mechanical movements. For my birthday recently, my partner got me a specht and söhne with the nh35a movement to learn on. I didn't want an expensive watch, but this one blew my mind with the quality of the build. And yes, the movement is very forgiving and almost idiot proof 😂

The Dial size is bit small, is it good for mens wrist?

I’m a Citizen fan over Seiko, so the Miyota would be my pick. But the NH35 is the only automatic I own, it’s a reliable, and accurate workhorse of a movement.

On TV in the 70’s URI Gella used to get viewers go get an old stopped watch from their draw and would tell everyone to imagine the watch working through psychic power and many did start ticking away but it was through the heat of the hand that got the watches going…..😅

this is fantastic and inspiring! so question on these DIY watch builds with automatic movement. When the movement stops working...do you just replace it? My hesitation with any automatic movement is that over time service costs far outpace the value of the watch itself...

I observed all my seiko nh35 for 10 days and the results varied from day to day. a timegrapher is useless if the setting is not stable. Cheap watches do not need to be adjusted because they will never be accurate.

I’ve noticed that many of these models seem to have a mismatch between the lume on the hands and the dial. Is it because the hands are serviced prior and therefore replaced? Or is this mismatch typical for this watch?

A very reasonable perspective. I would categorize the American railroad watch as something different than a scientific instrument. While technically, it is of similar quality and capability and very expensive when new (subsidized by the railroads), it was a work watch. It was functionally similar to a ship's deck watch as opposed to a marine chronometer. (the wristwatch equivalent would be pilots and divers watches) These watches were optimized for timekeeping AND durability/reliability. I would argue that most of the 'instrument' watches were optimized on precision timekeeping above all else. Maybe an extra category for 'work watches'; just a thought.

A few quick points: I think your position is good from a European centric view, not necessarily from an American or Asian view. I can speak to the American view. 1. No watch is necessary (wrist or pocket) - timekeeping via computer and smartphone is ubiquitous. Watch value now depends on fashion, 2. Wearing watches in jeans (at least American jeans): most jeans made today still retain their pocket watch pocket. Wearability is really a non-issue. 3. American watchmaking focused on very accurate, durable and reliable timekeeping. The American railroad watch is capable of timekeeping that is on par with a modern Rolex and is deigned to do so reliably in the dirty and challenging conditions of the cab of a steam engine. As long as you have the watch attached with a chain or strap, the lack of shock protection is largely irrelevant. 4. The American production system means that many 100 - 150 year old American pocket watches have a plentiful parts supply, including new old stock and new manufactured (e.g. you can get new springs). These watches are still easily serviced and worn; arguably less expensively than a mid-market Swiss watch, such as a Rolex. However, much like cars, these are a wonderful collectable but a poor investment (unless you get lucky).

My watch alba A3B025X1 using this movement NH36 ,, very exciting, seiko never do this before

I've had my aquascaphe for years now and wear it doing concrete work, demolition work, and general carpentry. It has gone through a - lot. Getting paint splattered on it, getting concrete dust/wet concrete on it, using violently vibrating tools (multi-tools and sawzalls) and knocking it on framing and tools and trailers. It has shown no structural damage and the movement runs very accurately still! I also take it bicycling where it also receives a fair amount of impacts. It's a tough watch! And thank god for modern day shock protection. on another note, I recently purchased a tudor black bay 54, I was enamored with photographs of it, it's so beautiful and the way it looks like the vintage tudor sub from 1954 really got me. However when I received it and wore it for a week it felt too flashy, too expensive, and also too big! and It's 2 mm smaller than the aquascaphe! (i have 6" wrists so most watches feel too big, my daily wear is a tudor black bay 32 which fits me perfectly). the BB54 just didn't feel like a dive watch, or like a tool watch, and i kept wanting to put my aquascaphe back on my wrist in that week. And you know how it is when you typically receive a new watch it's all you want to wear. The same magic I had instantly with my baltic wasn't there. All signs pointed to SELL IT and I did after that week. Now I'm thinking of buying a second aquascaphe :)

I gifted myself a model 218 in 1974 for my 30th birthday. Fifty years later, I only wear it for special occasions. I've kept it in pristine condition. I have since added a model 214 "Rail Road", a Rolex Air King and several other watches but my 218 remains my treasure.

We are a pair of watchmakers here since 1993 we do have our own collection of movements for the wristwatch, but we do also have maybe a dozen or so pocket watches in various states of condition, we do not service pocket watches for clients only for ourselves as the machines and tools we own are more sized for watch movements then pocket watches. Pocket watches are great we love them so much and with theft of the wristwatches in today's society s high. We love pocket watches and are considering wearing one on a chain in our pocket or perhaps around our neck for fun. To be honest and through our observation of our clients I really do not like the collector take so many are purchasing these pocket watches and wrist watches saving the boxes, papers, cards and such is getting tired to us. Buy something nice wear it and do not worry about it, enjoy life when done and left to your appointed inheritors they can always have it updated services and sold or retained. Ferrari 288 GTO 1985 would be our selection here, we would drive it often as well, enjoy these things our you just have stuff. Stamp collection died as many others (train sets) are headed that way, we think the pocket watch will survive the long run. Lance.

1. For a relevant measurement, you should set a second hand on the movement. It has lots of inertia which interferes with movement. Without a second hand, any movement can show a great result. 2. I got a watch with pre-2019 8217 (24h) without second hacking. Its power reserve is about 50 hours from full wind to stop. Two complete turns of 24h hand + 2 hours. Decent movement.

Don't forget, the American Waltham was the inventor of the concept of interchangable parts, making it the first to be able to produce more high-quality movements than their competitors (both domestic such as the Elgin National Watch Company as well as foreign watches) for less. True to form, their movements are still much less expensive than their finishing would suggest, regularly being available in perfect order for under $300. Similarly, the Soviet Chelyabinsk Watch Factory produced the Molnija ChK-6 from 1947-64, a licensed-built clone of the Cortebert 616 from the early 40s. You can have a movement that actually was used in Rolex pocketwatches of the 1940s, with the only real difference being a change in manufacturing location. A Rolex-branded pocketwatch with the 616 inside will cost at least $1200 (which all things considering is still quite inexpensive). The Molnija clone? Maybe $100 instead.

Guys like watches because it's like having an engine on our wrist.
