Adventures In Reach (AIR) hopes to expand what adventures are possible for you, teach the skills to help make that happen, inspire you to get out of a rut, and increase your confidence outdoors. We encourage you to challenge yourself and try something new, from a backyard adventure to an expedition. Although all outdoor adventures are fair game, AIR generally focuses on small sailboat or Sunfish sailboat sailing and camping, rappelling, knots, ropes, hammock camping, outdoor adventures with dogs, compass orienteering, canoeing, wilderness travel, outdoor gear, camping, hiking, and cold weather camping and survival.

I finally did some night sails a few years ago, it was the best fun.

That didn’t seem sketchy at all. Lol. You’re right about seeing better without lights. If you give your eyes time to adjust to the dark you can see a lot better than you think. It takes about 30 minutes for your eyes to fully adjust. If there is good moon light you can actually see quite well. When I was in the Army doing field exercises in the desert we would do night convoys. We had night vision goggles, but on a full moon night you could actually see better without them because they were the mono tube type so there wasn’t any depth perception when wearing them.

Sounds like an interesting experience. That's an intriguing idea--sailing by night vision goggles.

@@AdventuresInReach just make sure you get some that have 2 tubes (not sure of the real term). The ones we had had 2 eyepieces but only one tube looking forward so the same image gets fed into both eyes. No depth perception with those so you will have a difficult time judging waves.

I love night boating. I've got clamp on nav lights for Firefly. Best to keep the cockpit dark so your eyes adjust, but have a really bright flashlight for spotting islands and buoys and signaling other boats.

The flashlight we had was strong but finicky.

I have never sailed at night, but I love paddling at night. I can recall getting stuck on the Pocomoke River on a moonless night, and it was darker than the inside of a cow. At midnight. In a total eclipse. I couldn’t even see the water. And a head lamp only made things worse. Now I insist on at least at least a bit of moon. Or a cloudy night. Here on the East Coast the city lights tend to bounce off of clouds and make night navigation easy!

Midnight during a total eclipse would do it. Through your comments it sounds like you've had quite a bit of experience. I've canoed at night once when leading a trip and it was completely dark except for the stars. About half of us felt dizzy and disoriented and couldn't tell which way was up and had to sit in the bottom of the boat.

@@AdventuresInReach I would never voluntarily repeat the experience! Paddling on a starlit night is fun (on flat water). Paddling in total darkness is not!
