    As someone who discovered your awesome channel this past Autumn, I'm so proud of the growth I've been seeing in you and your content in such a short time. I've learned so much from people like you and Yvonne UX, and as someone who isn't in the space to afford lessons, these extra tidbits have helped me learn and challenge myself as a UX writer. I hope you continue creating for a long, long time. ♥

    This is such a lovely video and loooove your neighbourhood - thanks for sharing it with us :) So, this time my curiosity question is on.. what are the softwares you use to get your tasks done? I can see that you use Miro for organizing ideas and Figma for the actual work (writing). In this line, can you brief what other software helps in your day-to-day activities as a UX writer? And one more, do you also work on copywriting and other writing tasks for the part time job you mentioned as it's a startup? If yes, how do you switch between different types of writing (mentally and technically)? Also, I wanted to mention that your Udemy courses are a gem (sooo resourceful) but still I keep throwing a lot of questions at you - sorry, can't help :P Let me know :)

      Pavi, good to see you again! Thank you so much for your kind words and more questions! I actually love so much to engage and discuss and share information, so always feel free to ask MORE questions, haha ❤️ Regarding the tools questions: I don't know if you have seen it yet, but I just published an Instagram post where I share all my tools and what I do with them! I hope it helps! And regarding your second question: This question is so, so good! In my startup setting, I am required (or well, asked) to literally write all kinds of text: UX copy for our website and shop, blog posts, letters to our customers, Instagram ads, Google ads, job ads, YOU NAME IT. And it's so funny because having to do these different kinds of writing has really showed me how important it is to have a systematic approach. For UX Writing, I have that, no problem. Blog writing, I've learned that, no problem. But (good) copywriting is something I can only do when I'm in a certain creative mood. Luckily, I don't have to do a lot of copywriting, but I'm currently becoming increasingly aware of the fact that I need to learn copywriting properly in order to have it easier when switching between disciplines. Right now "switching" between the different types of writing for me means, I just do my copywriting tasks when I feel like I'm capable of doing them. What helps me is looking at inspiration of cool copy pieces (and I also have a collection of them) and brainstorming, but taking a class on copywriting is definitely on my to do list for this year! Hope this helped ❤️

    Hi Kat! Hope you're doing well. Awesome video as usual :D My question is not specifically related to this video but I have heard you say to get certifications from big institutions like Stanford or Oxford but they don't offer UX related courses online. So, how do we actually gain one? I mean I have been learning a lot from your courses but as you spoke about getting certification from these big names would enhance our profile.. I'm just curious on how can I get it. Let me know :)

    • @write-with-dr-kat
      @write-with-dr-kat หลายเดือนก่อน

      (1) Hey Pavi! Always doing good, always loving to see that profile pic ❤️ Unfortunately, TH-cam restricts the length of my reply, so I have to split this into several parts and make this your weekend reading 😅 But it's such an interesting question, I HAVE to dive deeper here. I think when it comes to UX areas (but UX writing especially), we have this misconception that we mainly have to go for certificates and programs carrying the word "UX" in their name. If we take a closer look at what UX Writing actually is we see that it is guiding, linear (i.e. one-directional) communication that is perceived via digital interfaces and is supposed to help users complete a process.

    • @write-with-dr-kat
      @write-with-dr-kat หลายเดือนก่อน

      (2) Any type of education that helps us understand any aspect of this better is helpful, for example, communication in general, information processing, psychology, readability of text on screen, intercultural communication etc. The same is true for working in a tech team, organizing agile projects etc., so for example, from Oxford University (Department of Continuing Education) you could choose short/online courses like - Technical Team Communication - Technical Team Leadership - Culture & Conversation - How to Navigate Intercultural Communication - Inter-culturally Speaking - Managing Workplace Behaviour for Better Performance - Language and Perceptions of Identity - Exploring Psychology: Understanding Human Behaviour. (Some of these are online, some are short on-campus courses.)

    • @write-with-dr-kat
      @write-with-dr-kat หลายเดือนก่อน

      (3) Just as some examples! I think moving away a little bit from the narrow concept of "UX" might help us to even broaden the horizons of our field and to understand not only the practical but also the scientific basis that UX Writing is built on. However, if you want to combine both - the very academic stuff AND the UX specialization - you might also want to check out Coursera! Doing some research for this reply, for example, I came across courses like - User Experience Research and Design (University of Michigan) - Introduction to User Experience Design (Georgia Institute of Technology) - Interaction Design (University of California San Diego). All three are pretty decent schools to have certificates from! Sorry for this wildly long reply, I hope that at least it was helpful 🫣❤️

      Hey Kat! You have no idea how helpful this is to me. Thank you so much for taking the time to find these courses and help me understand that just studying "UX" related courses is not actually gaining knowledge about it. Really gained a new perspective today. And ohh I love to read those big replies which are extremely helpful. So, no sorry-ss :) Thanks a lot again, "Daria" buddy!

      Hello and thank you for your question! ABSOLUTELY! In both fields, finding the right words to correctly convey meaning is crucial, so your skills will definitely come in handy in UX Writing. I think, Localization of digital products could also be interesting for you! This field is all about adjusting apps, websites, etc. to the local demands of different markets (culturally, politically, language-wise etc). Definitely a great fit!

      Hello and thank you so much for your comment! Very interesting and important question! No, as a UX Writer you don't necessarily do all the writing in a project. Some of the content may be written by other departments (the Marketing department, legal department, copywriters) and they will give the content to you. This is often the case in big companies that have a special department for everything. In smaller companies, however, the UX Writer often does ALL the writing!

      Liebe Arianna, hui, gute Frage!

    • @write-with-dr-kat

      My go-to source is startup conferences! In Germany, we have Bits & Pretzels, for example, but there is also the Startups World Conference or the Hello Tomorrow Conference. I don't attend these, I just look at the names. However, the problem with many startups is that they don't have enough funding to hire a UX Writer (usually, at this stage, most of them just cover basic roles like designers, developers, and sales experts), so I also recommend taking a look at UX/UI conferences because, sometimes, there are pretty awesome UX consulting firms and UX agencies that might be easier to join as a UX Writer. All the best ❤️

      Thank you for your kind words! It always makes me so happy to hear that my videos are valuable! Glad they are of help. I personally found it very exhsuating to create the portfolio itself, but once it was finished I felt so, so proud of myself because it showed me just how much work I've already done and how far I've come. Wishing you the same!

    Kat, thank you for your sharing! I love that you showed us 2-sided views and figures to picture the industry changes. Your thoughts inspire me to re-think about reality and how to react. In times of crisis, we must all decide again and again whom we love -I read this quote from a book. I wish I could make a wise decision and keep going :) P.S. I also enjoyed your Udemy class, especially for User Research And Testing For UX Writing.

      Thanks so much, Kay! Also, I love this quote - it's so true. Sounds a little cliché, but I also think that times like these test us and ultimately, some will stick with UX Writing, and others won't. And not sticking around is okay, too! Health, happiness, and security are more important than any career. Wishing you all the best for your future! May your decisions lead you to exactly that: health, happiness, and security!

    This is a very insightful video Kat. Thank you. I just got my first role as a junior UX Writer and tbh, it's not the easiest and I understand why top companies are only hiring seniors now. There are a lot of 3 weeks, half-baked UX professionals who don't have actual measurable results. Thank you for your courses on Udemy. They are now a holy grail for my UX work.

    • @write-with-dr-kat

      First of all, thank you so much for your kind words! I'm always so, so happy to hear that my courses help people feel confident working in UX because it is such a cool field and UX Writing is such an awesome, interesting career path to follow. And also, congratulations on landing your first role in UX Writing! 🎉 How cool is that! Especially, as you said, since junior position have become so rare these days. Also, I completely agree with what you said about "half-baked professionals" in UX. Everyone starts somewhere but I see a lot of people thinking that UX is a field that you can just jump right into because it doesn't require a lot of qualification. I think that is also because so many experienced UXers make such harsh comments - some of them just feel insulted by the way their profession is looked at by newbies or outsiders.

    hi kat, ux writer from asia here 🙋🏻‍♀i wanna ask a question. i am the first and only ux writer in the company, so the condition here is most people don't know what ux writer do or what ux writer can bring to the table. basically, most people are clueless about how to work with me and what expectation they can have from me. so far, ux writer's works are measured from how many jira ticket i can work on (i am placed in technology department that is why the measurement is still follow the measurement of software engineer). last week, the front end manager discuss with me about how to measure the work of ux writer. i am clueless. based on the discussion, there is no career path yet for ux writer, so i concluded that the measurement will not affect my salary or job level. the discussion will be carried over to our next 1:1 meeting. do you have any idea of what i have to do? or should i just follow your suggestion to grab my best shoes and runaway from this company? hahaha just kidding. thank you for your time kat!

      Ah, sorry I haven't replied yet, this is such an interesting case, thank you for sharing your story! So how did the situation unfold, DID you grab your best running shoes? I NEED TO KNOW! 😄 Funnily, I was put in the exact same position in this first quarter of the year. I didn't grab my best running shoes 😄 But, as you say, it is tough. What I did is, I looked at the particular tasks that I have in this first quarter. For me, these were conducting a user research on the value of the information of our entire website, re-writing our website's FAQs, and improve the conversion of our company blog (i.e. help people go from the blog to our product page). For these, I found specific metrics to measure my work, for example, for the FAQs I chose page views, scroll rate, engagement and number of support requests (my assumption was the number of support requests would decrease if the FAQs were good enough. I know, bold take 😄 ). To sum this up: I would definitely make sure that you measure the success of simple tasks, not your entire work as a UX Writer. Hope this helps!
