Is this the "Rockiest" Trail in Pennsylvania? - South Trail an AT Alternate
Between Lehigh Furnace Gap and Lehigh Gap one can find some of the best hikes in Eastern Pennsylvania. High on top of the Kittatinny Ridge, the world famous Appalachian Trail can be found on its course between Georgia and Maine. In this section however, several alternate or side trails have been developed allowing for hikers to make loop hikes along with the AT. One of these loop hikes involves the blue blazed South Trail which takes hikers to the very crest of the mountain and seems to intentionally navigate through and above every rock pile in the vicinity. As a fan of rock scrambles I was eager to do this moderate loop of about 4ish miles and see what it was about. Starting at the tiny parking area at Lehigh Furnace Gap and after ascending a rough and heavily rutted dirt road, I made my way northbound on the famous AT. It was mid September and the weather patterns had shifted, the air was cool, and delightfully crisp. The sense that Fall was around the corner was palpable as I made my way through a breezy forest. After about a mile I crossed the western trail junction with the South Trail. I continued for a mile longer until I reached the eastern junction. From here I began to follow the blue blazed South trail- heading south - and back towards the direction I had started. The rocks began immediately and did not stop. I passed an old faded sign warning that the trail was hazardous, and potentially dangerous. Views to the south over the Lehigh Valley began to emerge. At times the trail dipped into pockets of forest only to reemerge amongst more rocks. The fading afternoon sun cast a golden glow and long shadows, I was hiking into the light and loving every step. When I thought the views had finally ended I came into an immense rock field with 360 degree views, I was at the very peak of the ridge. I was blown away by the scene before me, I struggled to accept that this amazing landscape was a mere 60 miles from my home in the Philadelphia area. I took many pictures and marveled at the thought that these rocks have been eroding on this ridge for hundreds of millions of years. Another amazing hike in #scenicpennsylvania .

You were right in my backyard! That is a beautiful section and in fact there are plans in the works for the coming year to reroute the A.T. through that section much like they did with the North trail a couple years ago. I think we actually have a trail work day scheduled next month to do some prep work. The section from Lehigh Furnace Gap to Blue Mountain road is the best section of A.T. in PA. Really enjoyed this Walter.

Thanks for that information and update Ronman! I have to say I am a bit surprised by that. Although I found the section to be absolutely awesome and enjoyable, it was simply a day hike for me. I find it hard to believe that actual thruhikers would be happy to learn that another section of the AT in PA is being directly routed into never ending rocks lol! Thanks again for all that you do, and I do believe this loop along with the north loop and the climb east out of Lehigh Gap are three of the very best hikes in Eastern Pennsylvania!

Additional Comment for Graffiti: I saw this at High Rock in Maryland. A wonderful view across the Creation, but somewhat spoiled by those who have no respect for much of anything. Most people comment on how bad it is. I've also seen a few comments that say it is an expression of art. An easel and a simple canvas is an appropriate place to express oneself. In the example seen towards the end of this hike, not only is a disgusting distraction from the beauty of the rocky terrain, but vulgar and totally unnecessary. As a 71-year old grandfather, I see it as another example of how some in our society completely lacks discipline. And, it all starts in the home. By the way, that example did nothing to detract my empathizing and rejoicing with Walter in his wonderful expression of joy being in the Creation. God Bless all!

Hi Walter. First, I appreciate the way you took this loop hike and made it so special. I consider it special for these reasons: 1. two unique trails (AT and South Trail) 2. The wonderful views from the rocks, and how nice they look as a trail in their own 3. Your excellent filming and narration 4. The spirit you convey in how happy you were to be there I have a series on my youtube channel called "Walking in Creation - Hiking the AT". I too feel a calling to share the beauty of the Lord's Creation with others. I have some of the same feelings you expressed when hiking and filming and producing a video. I recall two of your videos in particular that were very enjoyable: - Hike south on the AT from Lehigh Gap to those wonderful views on the relocation - Your excellent video on the Dolly Sods loop I look forward to more. Keep up the great work, and God Bless!

Raymondskill Falls are magic, but the dying Hemlocks absolutely break my heart. I can remember back to the 90's when the trees were much healthier (although I think they were already being affected by the wooly adelgid back then, too). The environment and understory created by a thick and healthy Hemlock canopy is truly something to behold. Sadly, the same decline of the hemlocks is occurring in the nearby "Tumbling Waters" at PEEC.

    • @WALTERZOLNA

I agree wholeheartedly, it's absolutely devastating and sad to see. I have noticed the consistent decline over time myself in multiple locations.
