Advancements in Organ Perfusion and Preservation by Gabriel Oniscu MD, FRCS(Ed), FRCS(Glas)
Gabriel Oniscu is the Professor of Transplantation Surgery and Head of
Transplant Division at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. He
completed his surgical and transplant training in Edinburgh, Birmingham
and Kings College London and is a Fellow of the Royal College of
Surgeons of Edinburgh and Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians in
Glasgow. He is the past Director of the Edinburgh Transplant Centre and
former Transplant Advisor to the Chief Medical Officer in Scotland.
His clinical focus is multi-organ transplantation. Gabriel has been one of
the pioneers in the field of novel organ perfusion and preservation
technologies in the UK and has made a significant contribution to the
development of Normothermic Regional Perfusion in DCD donation.
He has a particular research interest in the role of technology in
transplantation, organ perfusion and reconditioning and optical sensing.
Prof Oniscu is the recipient of the NRS Career Research Fellowship, an
MRC confidence in concept award for technological developments
relating to normothermic perfusion and an MRC Clinical Academic
Research Partnership grant to investigate therapy delivery during ex situ
liver perfusion. He published 140 papers, 15 book chapters, edited two
books and gave over 100 invited lectures at international conferences.
Prof Oniscu is the President of the European Society for Organ
Transplantation.
This State-Of-The-Art lecture was presented at the INEDSYS Hepatology Club meeting on July 27, 2024. The problem is that research needs to be done on the various natural supplements out there on cirrhosis. Also we need a study of 3 days and 7 days water fast on cirrhosis. We can't just look at simtuzumab and then call it quits.

I was diagnosed with cirrhosis based on Fibroscan requested by my gastroenterologist and on december 2021 my score was 15.7kpa, so stage 4 (cirrhosis) which was caused by fatty liver disease, I started the ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting , 1 year, 75 fewer pounds later, yesterday I went for another fibroscan, my score went from 15.7kpa to 4.5kpa, stage 1(mild/no fibrosis) so...YES Cirrhosis IS reversible

Your fibroscan score was certainly an indication of liver inflammation and possible cirrhosis but the only accepted diagnosis of liver cirrhosis is through a liver biopsy. Congrats on changing your lifestyle and reducing your fibroscan score but the fact you were able to reduce your kpa score from 15.7 to 4.5 in one year is a strong indication that you were dealing with liver inflammation
I had normal LFTs with Ultrasound showing grade 1 fatty liver, but my fibroscan is 16.4 but my GI told it’s fibrosis and not the cirrosis and it’s reversible with medication, regular exercise and weight loss. Hoping to reverse it or at least make it better in a year. I am on Saroglitazar and Vitamin E
