Love my 2009 3.6tdv8 Westminster. Apart from one of the turbos going last year, it has been fantastic to own and drive.

Great video. From your experience, would you consider the purchase of a one owner 2007 3.6 tdv8 very high mileage (around 280.000 miles, I assume mostly highway miles) if it has a decent service history?
@@i.p.g8428 Thank you. Quite honestly, I wouldn’t let the mileage worry me too much at this point in the car’s age. If you bought one with 50k it may well be original but parts will be perished etc. A high miler now is likely to have had a lot of maintenance to get it to cover that distance. If it’s a one owner car with good provenance then buy it based on its condition. If you know it and the owner that’s even better. It’s all going to come down to price really isn’t it? If it’s cheap enough and you have a pot of pennies to invest in keeping it on the road, I’d say go for it. Whatever you buy you’ll need to invest in I expect and it could make for a good story. Not knowing your circumstances, I’d warn that if it’s cheap due to its mileage and that is how it’s ended up in your price bracket, you’d be better off walking away. These things need a healthy “rainy day fund” and if you don’t have that, you’ll likely end up regretting your purchase. Wait, save a bit more money and then buy one. I’m sure that one of the main reasons these cars get such a bad reputation is because they fall to an “affordable” price point without people realising that although the car was only a couple of grand, they’ll still need to buy parts or manage complexity for an £80k car! Cars get cheaper with age but parts and labour generally don’t.
@@FatNFurious Thank you for your opinion. I am well aware that the costs of running a V8 range rover aren't those of a Suzuki Vitara for example. As you said luxury cars equal luxury manteinance no matter the age of the car (maybe with the exception of the few parts shared with more modest models). In my particular case I have made my mind that I'd like to own a Range Rover (especially after a recent trip to the Cotswolds). Although I like the looks of the newer versions I won't be going for one of those because I find the sweetspot for my needs/desire in older models. I have been reading and watching videos about what to buy and I have narrowed it to an L322, a Range Rover Sport L302 or even a Discovery5, any of them preferrably with the most reliable diesel engine. I own several cars at the moment (two daily drivers and three "classic" cars, one of them I'm finishing restoring at the moment) and the fact is that I do not even need or use a car on a daily basis (I live in a medium sized city with all the services in hand and I do not have to commute for work nor use the car as part of my job). My inital idea is to get rid of my oldest daily (high milleage kind of "beater" with very little value other than the service I get from it) and get the Range Rover for esporadic use on weekends, so I won't be putting many miles in it. I tend to keep my cars for years and if I like them I won't consider selling them unless I really need to. At this point I have been searching the classifieds and among the cars I've seen worth to check, there is this high milleage one. I do not know the owner nor the car and I haven't contacted him yet to ask for further information, but considering the car looks right on the pictures, it's a one owner car with that high mileage advertised as a perfectly running car (I assume that with the original engine as it doesn't say otherwise), it makes me think it must have been mantained, otherwise it would be visibly falling to pieces. The price is lower than the average but not ridiculously cheap. I am not based in UK and the prices for these cars in southern europe are not even near from those of UK, nor the quantity or quality of cars on sale is the same, so I was debating if 270.000 miles were too much to bother checking the car and if I should pass and go for the alternatives (cars around 120.000 miles mostly with several owners already and lost service history). I have also seen a couple of "mint" ones (also around the 100.000 miles mark) but commanding prices around 25k euros that are over my budget for my needs and they still are cars of the same age or around it which are not free from the problems that arise from the age (components degrading) even with less use and regular manteinance, so the idea of spending less on a higher milleage car (given it has the most problematic areas like turbos, egrs, etc. solved) and keeping some budget for the problems that may appear is tempting me, considering also that that high milleage will keep its value quite low for the average potential buyer if I ever need to sell, although the investing aspect is not the biggest factor in my decission.
@ I do honestly believe there’s a lot to be said for maintaining the older stuff and stealth costs can be a factor too. I know it’s quite expensive to register cars in France and I’m fairly sure that is on a percentage of its value too so an older/cheaper one will leave more money for fettling on that part alone. I’d suggest you drive the L320 and the L322 before you chose the L322 😀. We have an L319 Discovery 4 which is utterly excellent and my wife adores it but the L322 is next level for the drivability. Also, if you want the most reliable version, I don’t think you’ll want the 3.0 TDV6/SDV6. They are well documented for snapping their cranks and I personally know someone who went through it with hers which was shortly thereafter written off in a non fault head on collision, she bought another D4 and that snapped its crank a few months later. So far, we’ve been lucky with ours but when (not if) it breaks it will get a remanufactured engine put in as my wife like she’s the car so much she won’t consider parting with it. For me, it’s TDV8 all the way but it’s not an option in the Discovery but weirdly is available in the RRS. I’d consider a 3.6 RRS but it won’t drive as well as a full fat. Let us know how you get on if you do decide to buy one.
@@FatNFurious Thanks again for your suggestions. I also believe TDV8 should be the way to go for me. L320 RRS are a more common sight around here and there is much more to choose on those at more affordable prices, altough maybe the smartest choice for one of those would be the supercharged petrol engine, especially considering I wouldn't be doing that many miles on the car. I am aware of the engine problems on the 3.0 TDV6/SDV6 (in fact many of them are advertised with having replacement engines) and that is why I lean to the TDV8. As the car looks I do aesthetically prefer the L322 over the L320. The BMW 177 bhp engines I don't consider as i find them underpowered for the car that is and the price difference against the 8 cilinder engines is not that big to make me consider them. In the end I think it is going to be an L322 TDV8 (either 3.6 or 4.4 like the ones you've owned) if I can find a decent one inside my price range which could be a bit stretched if justified. And by "decent" I mean one with the least hidden costs and neglection possible being open to higher mileages if it's an honest example. I'll share with the channel what do I finally get, until now I have been trying to target the model I'd prefer and now I have to go through the cars advertised and ask for detailed info, check them in person when possible or have them checked for me, etc. Regards.
3rd option be happy and get the 5.0 supercharger jag engine L320 or L319. It’s thirty but is a tank, a fast tank on the roads. Major faults NONE. Just regular oil changes twice a year or every 10.000 km +- 6000 miles , keeping an eye on the coolant hooses that pass between supercharger and the engine block and changing tensioner belts every 80.000 km or +- 50.000 miles. Watching the fluid levels once a week for precaution and everything will be more than fine. No turbines to change nothing just a fine supercharger injecting life on the engine and roaring miles away on the road faster on 0-60 than any golf or mini cooper sport.
Have you still got the 3.6 for sale?
@@NeilEdwards-r6z No, it went very soon after the video was released.
Fantastic review!! Thank you so much! I am in exactly in that position where I.m considering what to replace my Disco 2 with, which I love and have spent a fortune on improving, but it's getting old, (as in mileage is over 200K ) though I am still a stick monkey and love a manual plus not sure whether I'd rather spend money on it, like another engine or upgrade to a BMW 3 litre and have it all sorted rather than start again with another vehicle with unknown gremlins. Only real consideration is extra space, but IF I do decide to sell "Duke" and get a 322, now it will almost certainly be a 3,6 as late as I can affortd. I love your easy to listen to, thoughtful cadence, not trying to be a slick, scripted presenter but just matterr of fact and honesty with no axe to grind either way. I have enjoyed watching this immensley and it has been a big help. Cheers Guy
Thank you so much for the kind words, I really do appreciate it. Keep us up to date on what you decide. I've never owned a Disco 2 and have only driven one a very short distance; they're NOTHING like the D3/4 and very far removed from the L322 but they really do have a certain charm to them.

Great video thanks. My 3.6 does 25mpg average, mainly small trips and best is 42mpg 100% motorway at 65mpg. Do fancy the 4.4 however its the maintenance side that puts me off slightly, its the 8 speed box I fancy
The best and the worst Range Rover it’s the one you have. I love mine .
Hmm,...the worst Range Rover was the P38. The L322 3.6 is much much better. But I miss the P38 seats though, they were great. Fun fact: 3.6 V8 har excactly twice the power of the P38 diesel.
"Once a week I take it over 3k rpm..." What? Once a DAY if you want to keep the turbo waste clear! Might explain why you've got 20 mins of smoke behind you - my 4.4 tdv8 (2010 bought for £8k in Jan this year) only puts out 'a large puff' when I floor it. Think you need to increase your 'floorin' it' frequency.....
😀
Hi. Im about to build one with a bmw 520 estate. Do you have any pictures etc of how you welded the caravan chassis to it.
Just read a comment. Dpf is an issue on 4.4 . 3.6 didn't have dpf . Short journeys with 4.4 dpf light will come on yellow in colour. You can clear it yourself with along run . Light will go off . If goes red . Limp mode . Then a fortune to have it cleaned. DPF DELETE AND STAGE 1 REMAP IS THE ANSWER . BUT IT DIDNT COME FROM ME
My 2008 3.6 has DPF. I used a long drill first, the a hammer and a chisel and now it is open. A computer guy deleted DPF from the software. It all looks original from the outside. EGR is also blocket, and deleted from the software. Use a GOOD protecting mask when hammering out the DPF, that dust is definately not good for your health. Engine now runs very sweet and finds 6th gear quicker than before. 290 000km.
Want one.
I remember this😂
Nicely done! Thanks for taking the effort to video this procedure.
real good interview of the car ! solid personality !
I just got the same issue, it was P0300 and P0308, and then I got P0316 and P0300. I swapped the coils and waiting for the issue to return hoping it is the coils or spark plugs. But I also noticed that this issue right after a weather change in the Bay Area, it was very hot for 2-4 weeks and now it is really cold. I have a 14 5.0 with a CAI, off-road Xpipe (catless) and corsa extreme tuned.
I tried swapping things about like that with mine but the fault remained the same. If you've got a decent diagnostic, the crank sensor will be a cheaper fix but only if that is the issue. Let us know how you get on and the fault is when you've got it sorted.
@@FatNFurious Hello, so the coil from cylinder 8 is working properly. Next thing is to check the spark plug on cylinder 8. Although, I know that’s not the issue but it is a quick diagnosis. I think your approach is going to solve the issue. It is a very weird issue because the car drives perfectly fine but with no power, it is not heating up and A/F ratio is good. I think S197 platforms are going to have more issues because it is an old generation now. We should all start some sort of PAGE or a forum so we all can help each other.

No matter how much you try and convince yourself that the 3.6 is the better car, once you’ve bought one, you’ll always wish that you had bought the 4.4. The 4.4 is dropping in value like a stone right now. 18 months ago, you would have paid the same for a 3.6. The turbos on the 4.4 are less prone to failure (not exempt from, but less prone) Turbo failure on the 3.6 will wipe out any saving you made on the purchase price of a 3.6. Unless the very reason that you’re considering an L322 at all is because the 3.6 has dropped into your budget zone, then buy the 4.4. Also though, if that is the case, you might want to think carefully about Range Rover ownership at all. To be fair, if I had a 3.6 for sale, I’d probably say it was the better car as well!
My 2010 Range Rover Sport has just thrown its crankshaft out of the window. I am now looking for a 2012 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 v8. I hope it goes well, as they look great. Thanks for your videos.

Based on my 3y usage if 4.4d - the mpg figures are always showing 2-3 liters less vs reality. I am not getting less then 9l/100km, but the dash can show 6-7 l/1000. At the same time the km till empty tank show correct figures. I would say my average is 11-14 l/100km which is still fantastic
I have the 8 speed ZF in my XF, from a stationary it takes 2nd gear by default. If you go into the settings and allow the flappy paddles in normal drive, flick the paddle and slow to a stop, it will downshift when needed but will not go into 1st and will pull away in 2nd. Is the RR the same? This could be why when you lift off the brake it doesn't take off. Excellent video, btw.
Thank you. I don’t think this does start in 2nd, I’ve had a couple of Mercedes that do that like your XF but I wonder if the L322 is too heavy for that to be realistic. The f you count the changes it always seems to start in 1st too. It would be cool if I could configure the dash with GapIID to show the gear (just as a point of interest) but I can’t find an option to do that. I expect the reason it doesn’t take off so hard is to reduce drag on the box and aid economy etc. probably just advancement in torque converter technology. It does still move well just not as urgently as the ZF6. I’m happy with it now I’m used to it. I’d like to try an XF some time, it would be great to see what these engines can do in a lighter form, plus they look cool.

Hi mate, look up technical bulletin LTB00513 to get rid of the smoke at acceleration. I have a 2012 4.4 TDV8 that I bought at Xmas last year. My mechanic and I were scratching our respective heads about it for about 3 months until we decided to give the drain pipe upgrade a go. Wasn’t a cheap fix but I haven’t seen any smoke since it got done. Well worth getting it done.
I have a remapped 4.4 westy, drug dealer spec in fiji white, tinted windows and l405 diamond cut alloys. Black interior with piano black inlays. Hk hd sound system is beautiful. Oh and factory bodykit. The mapped 4.4 is a different car and shocks me everytime I plant it. Big bills but massive smiles. Just driven from Norfolk to the Scottish Highlands, next week back down to Newquay and then back to Norfolk. Cannot think of a more comfortable car to do these miles in. Bank account hates it though.
With reference to your oil build up and smoke issue.. I’ve had my 2011 4.4 for 12 years love it fantastic vehicle. I noticed this very early in my ownership. Took the vehicle back under warranty and the issue is actually the scavenge pipe which takes the oil away from the turbo is of two small a diameter so the oil gets past the seals and into the turbo then engine and burns off.. the fix is to drill and thread a larger diameter in the engine block and get a larger pipe to the turbo.. I had it done under warranty and apparently it’s a long job as the subframe etc needs to come out.. never had a problem since.. I remember ranting at the main dealer that if I’d of wanted a car that smoked that much I’d of payed a visit to a local car auction on a Wednesday evening with £200 quid in my pocket and no doubt got fixed up 😊
Had two 3.6tdv8s over the years was considering getting a 4.4 but now might save my money ha ha
I have had my 4.4tdv8 for almost 5 years, and have completed 80K miles, now it is up to 145K. Very happy , yes they do require maiintenance and most would say the LR specced 15K miles scheduled engine oil change is a joke and recommend changing at 8K which is what I do. Enjoyed the vid off to watch a few more. I have the idlers to do as I have a squeak on start up, oh joy , joy , joy.
BTW, ‘Harry’s Garage’ also agrees with you, albeit from a slightly different angle!
Great comparison! I think I’ll stick with my trusty(?) 3.0 L TD6 with 222k on the clock that I’ve had for 7 years and have spent a kings ransom on it! I know all it’s quirks and annoying habits, maintenance is simple in comparison and the tax is very low, again in comparison. If I want revs I just stick it in sport mode. It is regularly serviced, gearbox annually and other oils eg diff etc bi-annual. Have fun!
I drove my TD6 until 175K miles, but changed to the 4.4TDV8 and it's from completely different level.
I think the L405 with this engine also has AdBlue... I've also heard it's not as reliable, but anecdotal. A lot of stories you read on the internet seem to be from people who don't know the difference between a fullfat and a Sport, or don't know what engine they have, let alone why it's broken or the exact details of how or why it died.
@@JohnBaxendale ah yes, AdBlue. A friend of ours has that in her Discovery. Got a bill for around £1800 when it crystallised, ruined sensors and had to have tank replaced etc. I’m probably better off with the dearer road tax actually. Totally agree on the internet stories, I just wish people would come back and let everyone know what the resolution was once it’s fixed. As you say though, half the time they ask things like; “my car makes a noise, what is it?” Err, help us to help you please!
Good video, one difference you didn't mention is the 3.6 doesn't have a DPF, and the 4.4 does. Having had previous issues with "DPF full" warnings due to short journey city driving, and having to go for a blast on the motorway to clear it. I chose to buy a 3.6 for that reason. So if you are like me and do lots of short journeys it might be a consideration. They are both great cars though and I probably could be tempted one day with a late model low mileage 4.4. to replace my facelift 3.6 which I have had for over 7 years now and still love to bits. Good look with the channel.
@@jimbarron4444 There were a few differences I missed and you’d have thought I’d have mentioned the DPF as it was an issue with mine when I bought it! I’ll try and cover it in another video on the 4.4 and what I’ve gone through since purchasing soon hopefully. Thanks for the comments too, greatly appreciated.
Hey mate. Iv owned multiple of both. The 3.6 is a great machine and so much cheaper. But i think the 4.4 is the better one to own as the 8sp zf box really is the ducks nuts and i love the full throttle performance the 4.4 offers when your inner hoon rares its head
