8 Days Solo Through Wolf Lake & Sturgeon River - Tarp Camping Without A Tent In Temagami
Temagami is a magical place. It can heal the soul and feed the hunger for adventure. Both of those were welcome in August of 2024 when Jay embarked on his longest solo canoe trip to date.
.
After a long night playing a show, Jay left early in the morning in early August - heading for the public launch on Matagamasi Lake. A few years back, we both spent a few nights in the Chiniguchi Waterway Provincial Park area of Temagami on Wolf Lake and Chiniguchi Lake and were awed by the breathtaking scenery and towering Pine trees. We vowed to return as often as we were able.
.
On the first evening, Jay finds out that he only took the fly portion of our new tent, so was left with a decision whether or not to continue the planned 8-day trip as a tarp camping adventure, with the mosquitoes being far more active this year than is typical for mid-summer. Each night was a test of will and Jay even goes one night without any sleep at all - but it was all worth it.
.
The windex-like waters of Wolf, Dougherty, Donald, Colin Scott are something to see - not to mention the 80ft Pine trees that greet you on every shore. Jay is overcome with emotion on several occasions, feeling so grateful for the natural wonders we are so blessed to be able to journey through, even as reduced as they have been by human "progress" and "development".
.
After a couple of days on the gorgeous lakes of SW Temagami, Jay makes his way to the Sturgeon River. Though the water levels are low, as is typical in summer, Jay's limited solo whitewater skills were put to the test on a number of technical rapids. The Sturgeon is relatively remote and wild, so the scenery was unparalleled and the paddling was exquisite.
.
Without a bottom or netting for the tent, Jay decides to put in a very long day of paddling on the Sturgeon in order to reach Kelly's Portage from Pilgrim Creek in just one day - 55kms. This buys the time to have his next couple of days be very short, in terms of paddling.
.
Jay's two bandmates and close friends (Jay and Frank) meet him on Donald Lake to end the trip with camaraderie and music. The rain that had held off for 6 days finally fell in earnest on days 7 and 8, but there was limited travel remaining on the trip so the rain was welcomed.
.
We look forward to our next journey through the wilderness gem called Temagami.

Northern Ontario's Best Kept Secret - The Little White River - Whitewater Canoeing Paradise
มุมมอง 6K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Little White River, in Algoma, ON is a lesser known waterway, whose origins are hidden north of Elliot Lake. It is a major tributary of the Mississagi River, but relatively few paddlers journey this river each year. . It's only truly navigable in high water, so spring is the best time to make the trip down the Little White. With a rainy May/June of 2024, we journey the river in early June a...

We decided to go on solo canoe trips - together. So we chose a relatively easy route in the North end of Lake Superior Provincial Park - the Fenton-Treeby loop. We have done the loop together several times, and we thought it would be a great choice for Sheri's first solo canoe trip. . The fog was thick on our first day...so much so that it was actually difficult to navigate on Treeby Lake. It w...

Tawabinisay was a legendary Ojibwe guide in the Agawa region of Northern Ontario back around the turn of the 20th Century. Stories about his midnight hikes and remarkable navigational skills are still told to this day, but most notably his mention in Stewart Edward White's 1903 book "The Forest" tells much of what is known about the man. First time seeing an ultralight backcountry synthesizer 😊
Great video, beautiful country. Thanks for sharing your adventure. 👍👍
Great, great video. First of all, the music was excellent and I only discovered in your last video that you do your own music, very impressive. Too bad about the partiers on the island but you have a great sense of humour which I'm sure must have helped. I'm also impressed with your paddling and portaging skills especially on the white water and on those steep hills respectively. Finally, awesome job capturing the beauty of the places you visited and delivering really positive messages about camping etiquette and environmental stewardship. Well done and I can't wait for your Heaven's Gate video. 👍👍
This video is the best one yet son ! I was happy , sad and anxious all at once for you ! Thankyou for the best movie I've seen in a long time !
Thanks for the video! Loved it!
So enjoyed, we all truly appreciate your thoughts and sharing your adventures with us.. cheers
Cheers, Jim! Thank you for the kind words and for watching!
That was an amazing trip. I totally understand about trying to find answers in the backcountry on solo trips. This past summer for my 50th, I think I was looking for more than what nature could answer after planning a long 12 day trip and (spoiler alert) cut it short after 7 days. A minor injury and weather closing in made my decision a bit easier but I was still frustrated in the end. I definitely need to slow down more on trips and quit rushing through to get to a certain destination. Cause one thing Temagami backcountry has taught me; I'm really not superman and can't do everything that looks easy on a map. Lately, I've been itching to get out canoeing once more but winds have been brutal lately but I think it'll still happen before ice up. Planning some hot tent camping this November and into the winter. With both work and personal life issues this past month, I definately feel like I need more nature therapy lately.
Thanks so much, Darren! I know you're up in the opposite end of Temagami, but the whole place is magical. You're so right about slowing down...it's not something that I (Jay) do very well, but Sheri is better with taking it at a proper pace to enjoy the journey. I'm learning. Looking forward to your next adventure! We can't bring ourselves to hot tent, as we spend most of the winter travelling to our little shack in the bush - coziest place on earth in the winter 🥰
You have shared an amazing trip, thank you.
Thank you so much, Susan 🥰
Phenomenal work man, you created brilliant cinematic masterpiece here!
Thank you so much - coming from you, I'll take that incredibly kind comment! Much appreciated 🙏
what an adventure ! with a wonderfull filming ! well done.
Thank you so much for the kind words and for watching the video! The camera doesn't quite capture the beauty entirely, but we do our best 😀
Thanks so much for sharing this trip! Hoping to do Temagami soon. I loved the music throughout, had to wipe tears a few times! Thanks again :) Hope the general malaise / anxiety was gone for awhile after this - cheers.
Thank you so much for the very thoughtful comment and watching the adventure! That feeling is gone and hasn't returned...but we've done a few trips since, so it helps keep the proverbial wolves at bay 😉 I hope they were tears of joy for the lovely world we are a part of. Thanks again!
Thank you for the image of King's memorial. I knew him personally. A great man missed by many. Psst, there exists a portage between the North end of Kukagami and Donald lake. I've never seen a mention of it in any Chiniguchi video.
Oh, super neat that you knew him! We thought it was an interesting little tribute with the best view on the lake (at sunset especially). That portage to Kukagami was actually where we were headed before we were rained out on our lazy day! Thanks for watching and commenting, Steve!
You are a great story teller. Thanks so much for this beautiful video! ✌️🇨🇦♥️🍁
Thanks, Loretta! We do our best to capture the beauty of what we immerse ourselves in, but cameras never quite get it all 😍 Appreciate the kindness!
Thanks for this video! This is a route I have thought about and planned for a few years now! I feel the biggest draw back for me would be the unrestricted camping around the grotto. However, I do prefer tripping in the fall so may limit the numbers of people I would see. Once again, great video!
Oh, I hope you get the chance to do the trip! Being from Algoma, we're not used to the bigger crowds and full campsites - but we spent a great weekend on Wolf and Chiniguchi a few years ago in late September. The weather was gorgeous, so it was still crowded...but the views are so worth it. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about parts of the route, portages, etc. We're happy to help a fellow camper!
Amazing job job documenting this beautiful area - hard ti watch this when you have to went months to get back into Temagami backcountry - I’m planning gamble lake around lady Evelyn , Diamond and then down to emerald lake in 15 days. Gotta love Temagami winds and those instables💪🏽🛶.
Thanks so much, Curtis! We typically spend our winters editing our summer/fall trips from the previous year, so the heartache of the long winter isn't quite as bad 😉 It's the next best thing to being there! Good luck on that trip - it sounds like a doozy! Would love to have 2 weeks to hit the forest....
Really enjoyed this one! Especially the music at 29:16. Was that you Jay? If so, you definitely don't have to worry about imposter syndrome with respect to your singing! You do, however, remain a tent imposter with only your fly :p. Great that you were spared rain and that you made do with what you had. I had a similarly baking trip on one of my Temagami trips and I also had no appetite. It is hard to be hungry when it is sweltering. I stayed at the same site on Donald. How did you enjoy the red ant infestation? It was pretty bad the second time I stayed there. I saw that you are reading Bruce's book... I just saw him live a few months back at Massey Hall. He was amazing. Congrats on accomplishing (and filming) this challenging trip! Please consider adding more of your vocals to future videos! Cheers, Trevor.
Thanks a million, Trevor - you're too kind. Yep that song is actually from my most recent solo album - released it in 2020, so for reasons unnecessary to mention, I wasn't able to tour it and promote it haha. I typically prefer to not force folks to listen to my singing voice after enduring my yammering for the remainder of the video, but I appreciate the encouragement. I got so lucky with weather that I didn't see rain until the last 2 days - so grateful for that, especially because my tarp was my groundsheet 😂 I was pretty amazed at the amount and spread of the ants! A few people have noted that to me, but the site is amazing if you can keep them off of you. I only had a few bites here and there. Thanks again for watching, Trevor!
The worst item that I have forgotten was a sleeping bag. Wrapped myself in an emergency blanket. Worked OK for me. BTW, I cannot recall the last time I had a tailwind when paddling. Love the scenery on your trip. Thanks for taking the time to film.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting, Gary! Missing sleeping bag is pretty bad, for sure...depending on the season, of course! In summer, maybe not so bad. I edited it out of the video, but one time doing the Bark Lake loop a few years back, we forgot our paddles at home and had to buy some in Espanola (ssshhhhh....don't tell anyone!) 🥸
Too freakin cool. That was awesome!!!
Thanks, cuz!
When I was watching the premier I forgot to mention that I always keep an emergency mylar blanket in my first aid kit which doubles as a ground sheet if I forget to bring one Great video, makes me want to head back up to Temagami next year, I didn't get to go there this year!!
Thanks, Derek! We almost always have our first aid kit, but on this one I (Jay) forgot it 🙃 Packing after playing a show at 2am is a likely excuse, but I managed. I appreciate you checking out the premiere and for your tip! I hope you get a chance to get back up to Temagami...it's magical.
Oh my, one amazing adventure! One that surely will not be soon forgotten!!
Absolutely won't be able to forget it! Though the mosquitoes under the tarp would be a nice thing to forget lol Thanks for watching and the comment!
Tell us your toughest portage.
On this trip? The toughest was likely the one between Button and Dougherty - or perhaps Kelly's Portage, simply due to the 3.5km hilly distance. But all-time, would have to be Diablo portage between Diablo Lake and Santoy Lake in NW Ontario. What is your most challenging portage??
excellent video work ! big like
Thanks so much!!
Another wonderful video! Than y’all for sharing.
Thanks so much, Jerry! It's a magical place :)
Just finished day 2 with you guys! That’s so cool! My shoulders were in pain for 3 days just after 10 km paddling on calm waters😂 Will return to watch till the end 😊
@Shusts_in_Canada haha you get used to these things, trust us. The hard work is always rewarded deep in the wilderness with solitude and gorgeous views!
@@beautyofthebackcountry that’s so true, some you forget all you pain when looking at those views 🤩
I like that perspective 🤭🫣
haha!! Don't subscribe to the copy cats ;)
Looks like a very demanding hike but the view is totally worth it 🤩
The trail overall is quite demanding! This section is fairly technical and steep, but the reward is 100% worth it :)
Yay Sheri!🙌
Thanks, Jerry! It was nice to prove to myself (Sheri) that I could travel through the forest for multiple days on my own :)
Crystal lake.
Have you been up that way before, or are you perhaps from the area?
@@beautyofthebackcountry I know Elliot Lake area well.(Little White River my favourite area. Nice video!) Love following adventures. Just followed several clues and Google mapped it. I grew up in Elliot Lake , and visit it often, so I know about nostalgia. Love your videos!
ahhh amazing, thanks Frank! Glad you are enjoying our videos of the Algoma area and beyond. We sure are lucky to be in such close proximity to so many gorgeous wild places :)
Watching again with Jason. He went crazy trying to tell you to get the mosquito off your forehead at the end of day 5! Lol! Really enjoying this again guys!
Haha Those are authentic Northern Ontario bugs...no fancy post-production tricks here. Anyone who can wield a circular saw like Jason is bound to notice the little things ;) You guys are fabulous - thanks so much for watching!
Another amazing adventure. I loved it!✌️
@@tangenttrails Thanks a million! We had such a great adventure on the coolest river :)
What else is there truly?
Not much that matters, that's for sure!
Great video. Familiar with the creek and lake and always wanted to run that exploration adventure for the same reason. Cool to watch you navigate the unknown of the route and successfully complete. Thank-you for sharing !
Thanks, James! It's such a lovely and under appreciated canoeing area, Jay's been fishing on that creek since he was a boy. It was extra special with the fall colours being so vivid at this time as well. Thanks for watching!
We were on the Deer Run in June and wondered about this river. The canoe route is listed BR Maps. We stopped at the new bridge and checked out the rapids and thought...man that's a cheese grater! Kudos to you and your skills and making that route front and centre! Cheers!
Thanks, Richard! We were on the river in early June and it was in prime form, though we did run aground in a couple of spots, we managed to maintain the bottom of our boat in relatively good shape :) Always appreciate the kind words!
What a challenge.
It was indeed! The further we get from the trip, the more wonderful we remember it :) Thanks for checking out the series!
@@beautyofthebackcountry My son is there now. Hopefully late summer does not have the bugs and his weather is better.
@@cthymnn2010 Oh awesome! Best of luck to your son! The bugs should be considerably less intense this time of year, and water levels on the river are likely lower than when we went, but overall the trip should be fabulous!
Very cool! Those cliffs remind me of Devil's Rock here on Lake Temiskaming. The pure beauty of Northern Ontario never seems to get boring. Thanks for bringing us along.
We still haven't been out on Temiskaming in a canoe yet, but have heard some amazing things. Devil's Rock might push us that much more to visit! Thanks so much for watching and commenting :)
@@beautyofthebackcountry ya Temiskaming is what I often call little Superior. She sure has a temper some days and if you're not paying attention to her mood, you could be another statistic of the lake. So far she's taken 3 lives this year alone. One this past winter and two this summer. The third person they're still looking for but as I told the neighbor the other day; this is why I call it little Superior cause she often doesn't give up her dead. If you're ever in New Liskeard area, let me know. I'll show you the sites..... safely.
@@darrendavidsonoutdoors Whoa...yeah we've heard that she's super deep, and thus can be really cold even in summer. We'll definitely reach out if we make our way up to the Tri-Towns! Thanks, Darren!
I just drove through that area for the first time ever and just got back from a Rossport Island canoe trip. Anyway this river looks great but I think as with most Superior Rivers, they are short and sweet and a long drive away for many of us. Awesome video! You both are great to watch!!
We bet the Superior canoe trip was amazing! The Rossport area is so beautiful - we can't wait to canoe around those islands as well. Thanks so much for the kind words and for checking out our channel!
Awesome looking trip! That’s my type of adventure!
Thanks so much! We were so pleased with the trip - we can't wait to be back to do a bunch more fly fishing and run those rapids again!
Great run down the White. I've been wanting to do a fly fishing video on that river for a few years now. I've been to the river but never had the chance to enjoy it. Thanks for sharing.
It's a truly magical river - and the fishing is said to be excellent for brook and rainbow trout, though we didn't fish it very hard. Just a handful of casts from our campsite on the first night. We look forward to your video when you get a chance to make it. Thanks for watching!
@@beautyofthebackcountry thanks.... and YOUR music? Love it
Thank you so much, Shawn! It's nice to be able to set the mood just how we want by creating the music ourselves :)
I bet that was better than any carnival ride youve had in your life eh ? Lol
It sure beats the Tilt-a-Whirl! And it's free
Congratulations on your 1st Solo trip Sheri ! For sure it is a good practice for all adventure participants to feel confident they can navigate, camp and transport independently if necessary, not to mention the the solace that comes from being in such wonderful country solo. Also nice the way you guys planned this run to make this solo adventure happen. Great channel. Keep those adventures coming team.
Thanks so much, James! We completely agree with your comments - we're so lucky to be able to escape to such gorgeous country, whether solo or as a team. We appreciate the kind words!

You guys are doing great with whitewater! Nicely done! Loved the video and glad you didn’t go over those falls 😜 I could be mistaken, but I think that might be the river we followed last year from the Trans-Canada headed north to our out-in on the Missinaibi, near Chapleau. We kept remarking how beautiful the river appeared.
Thanks so much, Eric! We've certainly been bitten by the whitewater bug and it's super fun. I believe you would have actually been on highway 129 heading toward Missinaibie and Chapleau - that is the MIssissagi River that hugs the highway for a while. We have a video about that river as well you should check out - it's our favourite river! This one is a tributary of the Mississagi :) Thanks for watching!!
@@beautyofthebackcountry I'll be sure to check out that video too! I can see why it's your favourite river -- it's gorgeous!
