How To Underestimate A Hiking Trip And Live To Tell The Story - Hiking Through The Gateway To Heaven
Kitchitwaa Shkwaandem - The Heaven's Gate Trail in the LaCloche Mountain Range of Northern Ontario, Canada. This trail was built in the mid-1990's by a group of volunteers and remains very seldom traveled as a through hike to this day, though parts of the trail are well-traveled. An approximate distance of 40km is listed for the full trail - from Willisville all the way to Fort LaCloche, in Sagamok First Nation. This turns out to be quite misleading to the novice hiker, which we are.
.
The elevation changes throughout the trail make it so that the 40km 2-dimensional distance turns out to be more like 55km of true hiking, when factoring in the amount of actual terrain covered. 40km is a lot of distance to cover in 2 days, let alone 55km of almost constant climbing and descending 45-degree hills. Yet, this was our planned weekend in September of 2024 - just at the beginning of autumn. Oops.
.
The views, as you will see, are spectacular and so unique to this region. The gleaming white quartzite of the mountain range peeks out at regular intervals from the dense forest of Maple, Oak, Beech, Ironwood, Pine and Hemlock. Stunning views of the North Channel of Lake Huron, along with the North shoreline of the largest freshwater island in the world - Manitoulin Island - punctuate the arduous hike and give stark rewards at many spots along the trail.
.
One of the most breathtaking of these lookouts is the namesake of the trail - Heaven's Gate lookout. Our view from the top of it is the thumbnail of this video. It's about halfway along the trail, so roughly 20km of tough hiking in either direction - undoubtedly a great reward for hard work.
.
Early French explorers named the mountain range "LaCloche", which means "The Bell" in English. It's said that they would witness Ojibwe locals communicating to one another by banging large sticks on the quartzite in predetermined patterns to communicate different things to one another at great distances. The acoustic properties of the quartzite make it uniquely capable of reverberating sound long distances, hence the term "LaCloche" mountains.
.
We're canoeists, not hikers. But we do play hikers on (Rogers cable-access) TV. We enjoy portaging across long portages with canoes and heavy packs on our shoulders. But some amazing views and adventures can only be accessed by hiking over long distances on land alone, so we sometimes strap on our hiking shoes and slog our way through magical hikes like this. We're thankful that we did this. But next time, we'll budget 3 or 4 days...

Temagami is a magical place. It can heal the soul and feed the hunger for adventure. Both of those were welcome in August of 2024 when Jay embarked on his longest solo canoe trip to date. . Northern Ontario's Best Kept Secret - The Little White River - Whitewater Canoeing Paradise
มุมมอง 6K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Little White River, in Algoma, ON is a lesser known waterway, whose origins are hidden north of Elliot Lake. It is a major tributary of the Mississagi River, but relatively few paddlers journey this river each year. . It's only truly navigable in high water, so spring is the best time to make the trip down the Little White. With a rainy May/June of 2024, we journey the river in early June a...

We decided to go on solo canoe trips - together. So we chose a relatively easy route in the North end of Lake Superior Provincial Park - the Fenton-Treeby loop. We have done the loop together several times, and we thought it would be a great choice for Sheri's first solo canoe trip. . The fog was thick on our first day...so much so that it was actually difficult to navigate on Treeby Lake. It w...

Tawabinisay was a legendary Ojibwe guide in the Agawa region of Northern Ontario back around the turn of the 20th Century. Stories about his midnight hikes and remarkable navigational skills are still told to this day, but most notably his mention in Stewart Edward White's 1903 book "The Forest" tells much of what is known about the man. It's an intriguing book overall, and a must-read for outd...

This Is How We Camp! Spring HD Video Compilation - Wilderness of Northern Ontario
It seems that you have been downloading from our website again. Can you please share how you affected the car shuttle?
Yes indeed! We use your website often just to look for trip ideas, even. It's such a great resource and we so appreciate it! If you're wondering how we arranged the shuttle, it was quite simple, actually - we own 2 vehicles and parked one at the takeout near Kynoch/Bell's Falls, and took the other (with canoe) up to the put-in north of Elliot Lake. PS - we've added a link to myccr.com in this and future video descriptions 😁Thanks for the comment!
Great video! I'm enjoying your tolerance of other people and appreciation for the land and trees.
Thanks so much! It's such a privilege to access these wild places, so we try to be mindful of others having a different way to appreciate the outdoors, even when it differs from our ways :) Thanks so much for the comment!
I love the title of your video Thanks a lot for this nice sharing!😀👍Like 65 Greetings from new subscriber and friend 😀
Welcome to the channel, new friend! Thanks so much for stopping by and for commenting :)
Late watching this one but another amazing trip! Can feel your love for the outdoors in this Jay! Thanks for another great video?
Thanks a bunch, Mike! Glad you enjoyed it :) We both have a deep love and respect for the natural world and are strengthening that with each foray into the bush!
And just like that. . . 3 ft. . . some nice footage.
@RestlessViking Yep - just like that! We're getting 2 more feet right now... nice time to go for a snowshoe. Not a nice time to shovel.
Gorgeous yet challenging hike! Love it guys. Thanks for sharing ❤✌️🇨🇦
Very challenging indeed! But so worth the effort 🥰
Advil for the win! 😁💪
@@lorettaandjasonoffgrid 😂You got that right! 200mg of ibuprofen got us to the finish line lol
Gorgeous!! ❄️ ❤
So beautiful! Did you guys get a snow dump in your area as well?
@beautyofthebackcountry right now snowing down south near Shelburne. Haven't been able to make it up to the off grid camp due to all the crazy weather in between! I think it's snowing pretty heavily there now too. Near the west Arm of Nipissing. Hope to be able to enjoy it but not worth the risk of the 4 hour drive!
@lorettaandjasonoffgrid Best to be safe, for sure!! The lake effect snow is crazy already 😳
same here in Hanover, Ontario. green grass one day and hip deep snow 3 days later. Ours was heavy wet which made for some hard shoveling. 10 hours worth on the first 2 days, and that was just at home. Arms are like lead.
Ouff! That sounds like less fun, for sure...ours was light and fluffy, thank goodness!
Looking beautiful! Happy holidays!
Thanks, Jerry! It's definitely a festive time up here in the North 🙃
You guys look like pure joy!
Well put! We were overjoyed with the scene we hiked into. We couldn't believe our good fortune and timing! Cameras can't capture it entirely, but it's a good approximation :)
Looks sooooo nice! Nice to enjoy it after your big cleanup.
It truly is gorgeous after all of that hard work!
I wish!!!!
Careful what you wish for, friend! haha!
@ I’m dreaming of the snowfalls of my childhood….. bring it on! 😊
Y'all got a little bit of snow up there!! Cheers!! J & C
Indeed we did! Thanks to that big ol Lake Superior...Cheers!
Wow! What a great backpacking trip! Looks like my kind of trail, I love it! Do you remember the total elevation gain and loss for the entire trail? Thanks for sharing!✌️
You would absolutely love this trail, Jerry! It was quite challenging and so scenic at every turn. We don't have the exact elevation stats from our hike, because we only had the AllTrails app on periodically (to save battery life on our phones!). That said, the Alltrails website shows it as being 1285m of elevation gain, which is no joke lol see it here - www.alltrails.com/trail/canada/ontario/heavens-gate-trail Thanks for watching!
New sub! Cheers from Ontario!
Thanks so much for joining us on our journeys! Hope you enjoy as much as we do 😀
Great hike! Love the fall. No bugs and the colours!! 🍁🍂 I use a Madison River Outback hat. Works like an umbrella. Great for spring, fall and all winter.
Fall is absolutely the best time to hike! You can stay cool with temps under 10C at the warmest times, and the lookouts over deciduous forests are unmatched 😍 Jay uses a very similar hat to that one during summer to keep the sun off his face and neck. A key part of our kit!
My second time watching this one. Noticed that one of your hiking buddies and Sherry looked similiar enough to be sisters? Is that correct? 👍👍
Ahhhh...do you mean Dawn? She and her partner Rein were along for our second (and longest/most challening) leg of the trail! Dawn and Sheri have been best friends since childhood, but not blood related! They're sisters in relation only, but not genetically ;)
@beautyofthebackcountry yes I believe Dawn it was. They look quite a bit alike.....same smile. 👍👍
Horseshoe lake does look like a gem. What a veiw from that lookout too! Man that hike has it all, great views, cool forests, quartzite hills, way to soak it in. Fun to see a bear too. Looks like the perfect 3 to 4 dayer, way to rock it guys!
Indeed a perfect 3 or 4 day hike - 2 was a bit ambitious! Thanks for checking it out - not sure if your kiddos would be into the whole trail, but there are some really rewarding day hikes in either direction (from Willisville, or Fort LaCloche) that offer stunning views, without the punishing distances lol
@@beautyofthebackcountry thanks for the heads up on the Willisville area! And this trail. Kids have done some tough mountain hikes, they can do it, problem is I have to carry most of their gear..HA!!! So the day hike sounds goo. Maybe next time we head into Killarney for a canoe trip via Espanola this would be a nice side trip. We have to go two canoes now, so we are looking into Quetico, haven't been there since university. Have you done any fun routes that way?
@@21Swayzee Yeah your gang has been squeezing into that one poor boat, which was impressive! Time to get the canoe over their heads and portage 😉 We haven't been out camping past Steel River, to be honest, but we've looked at a bunch of routes around Quetico and beyond up near Dryden. Such gorgeous boreal out that way...less traffic even than here!
@@beautyofthebackcountry yeah, we are looking at a wabakimi train drop off too. I went to school in T Bay, so lots of amazing, less travelled routes that way.
@21Swayzee Wabakimi is on our list as well! We've been in touch with a lot of folks regarding that - people who helped create the park as well as folks who travel it often. Magical place!
Gorgeous scenery in there! And I've often had to use vitamin I as in Ibuprofen on some of my trips too. And yes, calling in to work is nice when you can but years ago before TH-cam days, in my much younger youthful days, I was once stranded after a snowstorm in the northern Ontario bush. A group of us were in a remote cabin and we made it out to the vehicles but the logging road was definitely not passable. Snow over the hood of my truck, no cell range, no Inreach. We made the executive decision to go back 3 kilometers up the trail to the cabin and wait another day for a plow to hopefully come. Work was not happy they didn't here from me but understood when I explained where I was and that the plow trucks couldn't even get to us and they needed to use a bulldozer to clear the road. The joys of living in Northern Ontario and playing in the backcountry. Often Mother nature wins.
Such gorgeous scenery, yes! That must have been a harrowing couple of days getting stuck in winter...at least you had a cabin to go to. It sounds like your squad made the right decision. For us, we didn't even bring our sat-com device on this trip, which was an oversight (it usually stays attached to Jay's PFD), so we needed to reach cell service before 9am so as not to panic our work colleagues 😆 Thanks for watching!
@beautyofthebackcountry yes. We had snowmachines at least but with the deep snow it was even difficult on those. And it was almost an hour drive on the logging road on a good day to get back to the nearest town with cell service so we simply said it's too dangerous, let's go back to camp. Family in town knew we were experienced with winter travel in the north so when we didn't come out, they simply said; after that storm they probably decided to wait an extra day. I used to joke with them; if you don't hear from me, just wait longer. I'll be fine. Wasn't my first rodeo doing that and my boss learned quick if it was Monday and I said on Friday I was going camping and I wasn't there..... then yup, I didn't quite make it out on time. But then again, there was a couple of times I could have if I pushed it but, meh, sometimes work wasn't a priority at the moment. LOL! Just don't tell my old boss that. Now with an Inreach I don't have an excuse not to contact them.
@@darrendavidsonoutdoors haha we won't mention to your old boss when we see them 😆But it sounds to us like you had your priorities straight back then too 👌
What a hike! Those mountains streams, the towering cliffs, the breathtaking island views at Ararat, and the Heaven’s Gate payoff at @24:18 … Wow. What an incredible hiking trail. And nothing like a surprise bear to keep things interesting along the way :p. Especially glad to see that there were no mishaps - especially on slippery day 3. Well done guys! I hope the legs and the feet all made full recoveries.
It's a highly challenging, but equally rewarding hike that we'd recommend to folks who have at least 3 or 4 days to complete! The Heaven's Gate view actually brough tears to both of our eyes and was a very special moment for sure. Surprise bears can be exhilarating, but we'd prefer to have more distance between us and our ursine neighbours when possible 😅 We were a bit apprehensive that final hour of hiking out, being atop that one final rocky peak, but that was navigated safely enough and we managed to get out with just aches and pains for a couple of days. Fully recovered now and magically looking forward to more hikes!
Mad core strength on you two! Bravo!
haha thank you! This is how we build our strength, though we sure didn't feel all that strong immediately after this one 😪
Wow, awesome but tough looking hike. You 2 are hardcore! Those 20+ kms that first day had me tired & sore just from watching! Beautiful overlooks and the trail through old forests never disappoints. I bet your sudden chance encounter with your wild friend was startling for sure. The smiles at the end though are what it's all for. Thanks for sharing. 👍👍
Thanks so much! Yes, the chance encounter with our bear friend was invigorating to say the least 😅 We couldn't believe the views and our fortune with the weather (until the very last hours lol). Thanks for watching!🙏
Awesome video... one question... why do people do that long portage from the Kelly Farm to Muskillonge Lake and not paddle Kelly Lake all the way down to Gomagawong Lake then portage to Gawasi/Green lake to Muskilonge? Would be easier lol.
haha great question! For me (Jay) it's because I don't mind long portages and find them better than the in-and-out of the puddle jumps. Both Sheri and I actually enjoy a nice walk through the forest, so don't shy away from a long portage. I can't speak for others on that point, but for us that's why. Thanks so much for checking out the video and for the comment! 🙏
@beautyofthebackcountry awesome. Loved your video. We have a family owned camp at Glen Afton called Cowboy LaBelle on the Sturgeon River. Love it there. Aldo I never been in the back country much I will one day... but we do enjoy the area around camp... Chinigouchi river... Sturgeon River... lakes around it too. My dad went to Kettle Falls when he was younger... I'm next to go 😉
@@michellabelle6357 That's beautiful country out there! Highly recommend visiting the more remote parts of the Sturgeon and Chiniguchi Rivers...they're magical! Thanks so much for watching and commenting 🙏
Just love your videos. Thank you for entertaining us. We needed a nap after all that uphill🥰
Thanks, Karen! We needed a nap after this one too 😅
That was a fantastic video you guys ! The difficulties you face are 40:37 unbelievably treacherous sometimes but you slog on and make it back safely !
Thanks mom 🥰 We made it out, thankfully! Sometimes the journey is tougher than we anticipate, but we always make it out ❤
Have hiked portions of La Cloche…super beautiful area! TY!
It's so beautiful! And it's also surprisingly large - many people associate the LaCloche range with Killarney, but it extends quite far west. Thanks for watching! 🙏
Wow!! Well done. You two put out such great videos, with the focus on the sights around you, thanks. It's funny, I spent time this summer looking intently at that mountain range from my vantage point on Philip Edward Island, and thinking there must be some great hiking and exploring to do there. I didn't know of this particular trail, but this video definitely peaks my interest. Walking out in decreasing elevation on rock and in the rain must have been quite a challenge.
Thanks so much! Yes, the final hour of portaging down the soaking quartzite was a bit touch-and-go, but we took it slowly and were certain of our footing and made it out without a fall. Highly recommend the area - there are many shorter day hikes from either Willisville or Fort LaCloche (south of Massey - quite close to you!) that are very rewarding and not so...arduous lol Thanks so much for the kind words and for watching 🙏
Hello hello! What a hike! Guys you are an inspiration indeed 🤩 Loooove the views, thanks for sharing! 🫶
Thanks, Lana! We highly recommend this trail if you and your partner are ever able to take the time. It's challenging for sure, but if you can budget 3-4 days it would be a delightful hike. Thanks so much for watching and commenting 🙏
What a fantastic episode my friend! You nailed it here! Flawless presentation
Aww thanks, friend! Sometimes you just can't get bad footage of such a lovely area 🙏
Hahaha "this day is brought to you by ibuprofen" 😂, try some Salonpas patches on the hot spots at night, I usually put one or two on my knees to help give em a rest. You two covered a lot of distance over 2 days 😱 Really nice scenery out there! Next time don't bring the chairs and fry pan😅, share the katadyn filter between the two of you instead of bringing the additional Platy. That"ll save you 6 pounds!! Also must be nice to get to sleep in the Durston tent with a mesh inner this time 😂
We'll look into the Salonpas for sure - the aches were real after that first day! The scenery was unbelievable - we'd seen the LaCloche range before, but from the tops of the peaks overlooking Huron, she's a sight to behold 😍 We're not hikers by trade, so the extra weight of the frying pan and chairs are things we don't even think about haha. The Durston is definitely nicer with the interior...who knew? 🤣
Beautiful hike. What a slog! Love the old growth hemlocks and quartzite ridges. The naanzarotti looked awesome! Glad I could inspire a meal!
Thanks for the inspiration, Tyler! Naanzarottis were delish and hit the spot after a long day 🙏
That was a endurance test for sure. Great content. Spectacular scenery from some good people!!
Thanks, Jeff! This one is basically in your backyard, if you're ever considering it. Worth the slog for the views, as long as you give it enough time to not have to rush...or be late for work lol
Well, this anxiously awaited video did not disappoint. I'm impressed you guys went as far as Wright's Lake in one day considering the terrain and the weight you guys had on your backs. I think you probably turned on the trail that leads to Camp Manitou when you got that Alltrails notification; it's a very well-worn trail used to get to the lookout where you were earlier. Glad the weather cooperated for you, more or less. I love that trail and that wilderness, so glad you documented your trip. Well done.
We think you're right about where the trail split - there were trail signs clear on the trail down toward Camp Manitou, but none directing you westward toward the rest of the trail, so we had to look pretty hard for the correct trail. We were inspired by some of your videos showing the area of the Heaven's Gate trail and we're grateful for your insights and experience. Thanks so much for checking it out 🙏
Added comment - don’t forget the bear repellent. Thanks for the introduction to the area. I had no idea the La Cloche range extended that far west.
This part of LaCloche is magical and typically much less travelled than the Killarney area - something to keep on the list! Bear spray is something we haven't added to our kit just yet, nor are bear bangers. We typically stick to camping in areas where there are no habituated bears and are remote enough that they run from humans as fast as possible. We are definitely considering adding one of them to our kit these days, now that we're closer to civilisation. Thanks for watching!

Aww haha thanks, Derek!! 🙏
I bought a little cabin about 20km north of the start of your trip. Feel really lucky to have been able to do that.
That's awesome! It's such a beautiful area up there - quiet and full of lovely vistas. We highly recommend canoeing this river in spring. The fishing is said to be superb as well, though we didn't manage to catch any. Congrats on the cabin!
Another lovely film, even better to spend time with good friends. What is Zane's channel please? I couldn't see a tag or link
Oh! Zane's TH-cam channel is just getting underway slowly now, but you can find him at @avocado.adventures on TH-cam, Instagram and Facebook. It was truly wonderful to be able to share our journey with our great friends. Friends in general are such a blessing <3
Awwwww... you two are such beautiful souls... i loves ya. Thank you so much for your films and for letting us be part of your adventures and magical life. 😊
Thank you so much for watching and commenting! It really is something to be able to do these things with the person you love most (for both of us), and we count ourselves eternally blessed for that. Many more to come!
Yes Sheri! You nailed it sister!
Thank you so much, Joolz! It was a challenge I've (Sheri) been working towards for some time and am so happy to have accomplished.
At last! Someone nearer my age doing this stuff! Yesssss! Those other 30yo guys make me feel old!!! So glad i found you, i will be binge watching. Such a beautiful country, and you have so much love and respect for Nature... right up my street (or river). Looking forward to travelling with you, albeit on youtube, which is as near as im likely to get. Respect to you from me in 🇬🇧p.s. just realised that you're a musician too...same! We're definitely friends now!😅🎵
Haha Those 30yo's have the market cornered, but we 40-somethings still have some spunk 😉 Fellow musician! Welcome to the channel - hoping you enjoy what we do out in the Northern Ontario of Canada wilderness. Welcome aboard, new friend!
Very nice trip and great filming. Love the drone shots and the sharing of your thoughts. Maskinonge lake is one to avoid in my book. Typical junked up campsites when ever there is easy access, I'm not one who cares for lakes with dams to raise water levels either. Love Wolf to Chiniguchi Lakes, just wonderful!
Thanks, Donald! I agree regarding Maskinonge, but it's such a lovely lake and deserves to be paddled, even if you have to dodge some pontoon boats. I knew there would be plenty of motorboats, but the raging kegger on the tiny island next to me was a wild card I couldn't have planned for lol The whole area is complete magic, when human disregard is taken out of the equation. Thanks for tuning in!🙏
@@beautyofthebackcountry Yep, sometimes other peoples activities can interfear with a place or time. When that happens I just move on and continue enjoying where I am and try to keep some distance from the busy places. That's usually not hard for me cause I only go out in early spring and very late fall. I'm not out in the summer.
Awesome 3 part series on the Steel River! We really enjoyed that. We're hoping to do this loop next year. Cant wait to check out more of your videos!
Oh, thank you! We 100% recommend the trip, if you can take at least a week. Reach out if you are looking for info or maps or otherwise help on planning your journey. Looks like you enjoy similar trips so we'll check out your channel as well!
@@beautyofthebackcountry Thank you so much! You guys are awesome :D definitely will do. Love planning next years trips through the hard water season
Thanks for sharing. Great video
Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
I love this! You did such a good job! Just awesome footage of this beautiful area!
Thanks, Mike! Who knew you had a TH-cam channel?! Amazing 🥰
this "cracked" me up. "Butt" I think this is fake? 😂
@NotSoEpicAdventurer Haha this was an April fool's short we put out this year... who's to say what is real and what is fake these days with AI? 😉
@ I recall seeing them too - just couldn’t avoid a few bad puns lol
Sure is a beautiful area! Good job, TY!
It really is! Thanks so much for watching :)
i keep hoping that your next video's music is turned down. i just can't do it anymore. peace ☹
Appreciate the feedback - sorry it's not for you. Best wishes!
Hello! Congratulation on another great trip and amazing video. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and beautiful places ❤
Truly, it was our pleasure to share. Temagami is such a gem of wilderness that we can't wait to return at the next opportunity! Thanks for watching and for the sweet comment!
Hello Ontario friend. Such a beautiful video and story telling about your adventure. You have gained a new subscriber. 💕
Thank you for the kind words and for subscribing!
Paradise Lagoon is a gem, yep as long as people enjoy with destroying it with garbage. It's been a long time since I've been to Wolf Lake, so cool to see it again, and the rest of the route. Oh man, I've have forgotten so much crap over the years, way to adapt and rock out a solo adventure. Beautiful trip.
It really is a gem - the whole region is so special and we can't wait to get back. Thanks, Mattias!
