My Sturgis 2023 Bike Week Summary, Thoughts & Pics
Another Sturgis Bike Week experience to talk about. Some things were better, and some things were worse, but we always have a great time. The riding is hard to beat, and after a lengthy period of planning (or not), it all comes together. Understand this 👉🏼 I cannot post all of the pictures I took, and risk getting booted from TH-cam, nor do I want to get anyone else in trouble! ✌🏼

2021 Harley-Davidson Road Glide M8 107 Budget Stage I Upgrades - Part 2: Slip-ons & Tune

I took the OEM stock Harley-Davidson touring mufflers and cut the baffles out, and removed all the internal fiberglass wrap. I then tuned the bike with the Screamin’ Eagle Pro Street tuner, which worked like a champ. This little project truly exceeded my expectations!!!

  • @richardrussell500
    @richardrussell500 ปีที่แล้ว

    Take a look at the DK Customs torque thrust inserts now that you have removed your baffles... they claim it improves torque, sound and performance. Something to consider. The unfortunate thing with the HD tuner is that it will still only tune to an EPA lean situation. An aftermarket tuner will allow you to richen the tune, which will allow your engine to run cooler. Of course, if you are still under warranty it will cause problems with your warranty. Enjoy your new ride :-)

    • @whiskeymechanic
      @whiskeymechanic ปีที่แล้ว

      I wasn’t aware of that detail with the tuner… 🤔 interesting & annoying at the same time 😄

    • @richardrussell500
      @richardrussell500 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@whiskeymechanic I understand you can tweak the HD bluetooth tuner a tad bit... but still within EPA limits. all it does is allow your engine to run a stage 1 setup without destroying your engine. you will still have the same M8 factory level tune, which is too lean. however, with that said, it is my understanding the M8 factory tune is more rich than the twin cam engines. so much so that you can either run slipons OR a high performance air cleaner without having to retune. of course, retuning to a richer setup is always better. I have read that Powervision(?) has modified their tuners for EPA reasons. don't quote me on that. EPA is clamping down. a Yamaha/Kawasaki/Suzuki dealership here locally was threatened by the CARB for selling offroad tuners. they had to pull them from their shelves or pay a HEFTY fine. and the EPA is getting stricter. all in the name of electrical vehicles.

  • @richardrussell500
    @richardrussell500 ปีที่แล้ว

    I highly recommend installing the Trask vented transmission cover to allow your case to breath properly... if your engine is healthy, you will get zero snot out of the head breathers. No more oil/water/hot air into the intake manifold. Your engine will be happier and the top of your pistons will not have excessive carbon buildup, which leads to detonation. You can buy a Screaming' Eagle air filter badge to replace that 114 badge.

    • @whiskeymechanic
      @whiskeymechanic ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree 👍🏼 …AND let me add this little note! 👉🏼 the range of deflection is smaller, tighter when done with the wheel on the ground. For my year & model, the “range of deflection” (R.O.D.) was a total of 3/16” on the ground, and (the R.O.D.) was about 1/4” (technically 0.24” or 6.2mm) in the air. 😵‍💫🤯

    • @richardrussell500
      @richardrussell500 ปีที่แล้ว

      My 2022 service manual for my Street Glide says to do it with the wheel off the ground... however, as a longtime HD owner, belt deflection was always measured with rear wheel on the ground. A trick I learned years ago is to twist the belt with the rear tire on the ground, no passenger and no luggage. If the belt is properly adjusted, you can turn it by hand 45*. More than that and your belt is too loose. Less than that and your belt is too tight. My manual also has the silly oddball measurements with no number rounded.

      I love that sidecar setup... I once looked into it so I could take my dog for rides. The problem on the new HDs is the drop sensor. When turning these bikes like a trike, the ECM gets confused and tells the bike to shut off. I asked HD about this and got a stupid look. I stopped looking after that. Enjoy :-)

I’ll be inspecting and probably replacing that bearing with an aftermarket throw out that has conical pin bearings.

    Likely these types of failures are caused by not enough free play in the clutch adjustment. If the pushrod that goes through the clutch to the adjuster spins this thrust bearing will also which it's designed to do but not constantly. Car clutch thrust bearings fail the same way if there is not enough slack in the adjustment or if the return spring fails.

      👍🏼That is another consideration… I have seen “coring a cat” done too, but I have 1 concern about it. I want to find out if the core of the cat is helping minimize reversion, sonic pulses, and thermal pulses… all which can rob power from your engine. Not to mention, I know the cat produces a ton of heat due to the mass of material inside it. Right now, as the bike is configured, I still have the cat’s core in place, and much like the old popular power cones that sat in the base of the header pipes, there is actually a power cone (of sorts) at the inlet of the mufflers. So, being this close to my trip to Sturgis, I’m going to leave it as is and research this more. Stay tuned! Be safe!✌🏼

    So my brother in laws whole foot shifter assembly came out of his 2003 ULTRA Classic going down the road !!!! Went to shift and because of that little bolt at the back the whole spline shaft including the shifter pegs came out of the casting. Also check the rear transmission shifter arm ( right side looking at the bike ) for movement with the bolt being tight enough on the spline shaft . Known problem for the touring line up . If you strip the transmission shaft it gets EXPENSIVE with the whole derby cover having to be removed to get to the transmission arm .

    • @whiskeymechanic
      @whiskeymechanic ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s very unfortunate for your brother-in-law! It’s a startling moment when you go to shift and nothing is there. You’re correct about the transmission shaft could become a pricey repair. As for the heel/toe shifter shaft… as long as the pinch bolt stays even loosely inside the inner shifter arm, that shaft shouldn’t fall out. The bolt prevents the arm from sliding off because it can only be installed in the recessed groove…But like he experienced, if that pinch bolt falls out, or the inner arm was never properly installed (only half way) on the shaft, big troubles are coming. 👍🏼 Thanks for watching, and stay safe. ✌🏼

      I thought so. You only get a basic instruction sheet in the package. Then you have to look up & print the full instructions from their website. It’s around 10 pages, but a lot of it is pictures and/or the same information but for the different models. First thing that will likely happen is you’ll need to download some updated software/firmware… that’s just the way it is with wireless devices. The fact that you can do a tune at any time with you smartphone is worth every penny… in my opinion.

      I’d compare the sound of my modified mufflers to Tabs… very deep growl!

      Yep… Hammock seat and mini boards for the wife. Taller clear windshield for the long trips, extra tail lighting, and so on… $$$ Always trying to find a way to save a little money.

    You need to get rid of those stupid stock breather tubes too!. Get 3 pieces of 3/16 tubing, place on the breather ports, connect the 2 two tubes to 3/16 tee, Drill a hole in the lower back plate and run another 3/16 tube off the tee out the drilled hole in the back plate and into a catch can or the ground!. My brand new 114 milw-8 from mile one isn't eating or ingesting it's own poop!.. See DK customs video on the pistons all carboned up, proformance loss and future engine damage!.

      👍🏼 Thanks for tuning in here crockett11000. I have seen DK Customs’ video (and many others) on modifying the head breathers. I run a catch can on my truck, and have absolutely seen the benefits of it. So, I totally agree with you on the topic, and once I decide on which design to go with, I may make a video as well. Here, I’m just trying to throw out my option to y’all on a simple & more affordable “budget” Stage I for a 107” M8. I couldn’t stand the sight of that air cleaner, or the “sewing machine” sound of the engine. The days of straight pipes and jet kits are quickly fading away.✌🏼
