Welcome, Eloy Jimenez! Locked On Rays
In this festive Locked On Rays episode, we break down the Rays taking a chance on former White Sox/Orioles designated hitter Eloy Jiménez with a prove-it deal. We break down his $2 million contract with incentives (if he makes the team) and discuss his power-hitting potential, injury history, and what he could bring to the lineup in 2025. Can he follow in the footsteps of past successful Rays bounce-back stories? Then, we get into our Rays holiday wish lists. (Hint: We’re asking Santa for more offensive help in 2025, plus shovels in the ground for a new Rays stadium in St. Petersburg.)

As someone who live in Vegas, I believe the construction for the A's stadium has already started. They demolished the Tropicana casino already
Eloy Jimenez, Danny Jansen, Joe Boyle.... Championship! 😂
Congrats on 2k subs! Hope you and the rest of you all have a Happy Holidays and here's to 2k more soon!
Guys, I really like you and listen to every episode. Which does not mean that I agree with all of your opinions. And hey, I completely disagree this time: you are happy about a player who - will probably last half a season, if we're lucky - will "maybe" hit 12 homers in that span - will only be playing as DH and not even that all the time...??? Sorry, but these potential 4 million $ could be spent better somewhere else.
Congratulations on over 2K subs. Insofar as Eloy Jiménez, he reminds me of Christopher Morel without the defense. A DH with power, low batting average/on base percentage. Hopefully, he stays healthy. Very surprising we are heading into January with Pete Alonso and Anthony Santander still out there. Not that either is coming to the Rays, but surprising nonetheless. Merry Christmas, guys. Thanks for the great pod. 🙌
My wish is Junior turns into the new face of the franchise.
Love you guys so glad you guys made it to your 2k goal this year to many more good years 🍻
I wish for world peace. That, and that I hit the Powerball. Merry Christmas! 🎄🎁🎅
My wish is to have the Stadium crap totally resolved.
My wish would be to get the trop repaired in time for 2026. Another wish would be to get more offensive bats. And do something about the outfield. I like caballero at SS better. Not to mention he's a better offensive player than walls
Santander would be nice but I highly doubt it.
@@johntardis75 Disturbing that the Rays are the only AL East team (as far as I know) who has not at least reached out to Anthony Santander.
@@Elephant2024 indeed, I’m worried about the Red Sox and Blue Jays next year they are only getting better and especially if they sign Santander
Is he an option at First base if the Rays trade Yandy Diaz.
Is Johnathon Aranda going to be with the Rays next year h e started to show some pop in his bat when he got playing time.
He's definitely in the mix...with the short porch in RF, it would be nice to get some pop from the left side and he could do that.
In terms of immediate impact, looks like the trade is a straight up exchange of Springs for Boyle. As Ulises mentioned, the Rays signed Eloy Jimenez (former White Sox OF/DH) to a minor league contract. Guess it will be discussed more the next podcast.
Excellent crossover pod. Saddened by the passing of Rickey Henderson. Painfully ironic he passed away just after the A's left Oakland. Rickey was only 20 years old when he came up to the A's in June of '79 as a rookie. And during the 1980 season, both he and Manager Billy Martin were the two central components of the team, which revitalized the franchise keeping it in Oakland when it looked as though relocation to Denver was a certainty. Rickey was always a catalyst for the A's or whatever team he played for.
Stu needs sell the team. This team needs stay in Tampa
PLEASE, could ANYBODY tell me what our score is at Yankee Stadium? It's said hundreds of time that the Rays win more games vs. the Yankees in New York than vice versa. I cannot find those stats! Please help me out, and even if it is just for the last 3-4 years... THANKS A LOT!
Stu sternberg you clown, just sell the team. They never gonna build a new stadium.
Maybe have a Rays IPO. What about a Publix sleeve patch. Or even a Hard Rock patch. Or even better a official lap dance sponser from Mons Venus arm patch.Maybe raise money for naming rights for the new stadium. Or a Rays car wash.
21:51 to suggest that the other owners of mlb should help fund a new stadium for the Rays is lunacy. They would pump those millions into their own franchises
I think STU is going to find someone to buy the team. This way he can save face Tampa Bay Rays have a stadium and STU can end his MLB chapter as an owner of a team..
18:19 the ongoing maintenance and insurance should be the responsibility of whoever owns the stadium, not the team. That's the way it works with every other stadium. If the county is assuming ownership of the new stadium then the county is responsible for it's maintenance and insurance
MLB and its owners are tired of Stu's antics and want new ownership and a new stadium in Tampa. Manfred met with City, County and the Govenor to formulate a plan to oust Stu and move team to Tampa or at very least a location in Pinellas closer to Tampa, their plan was to pass the bonds to force Stu's hand, which he doesn't have a hand and never did. The problem is where do they play for next 4 years? It's still St. Pete's responsibility to provide an MLB stadium for them to play through 2028. Somehow MLB will force Stu to sell.
i hate stu sternberg but RAYSUP🎉🎉🎉
Miss the days when the off-season discussions centered around who could potentially be added or subtracted from the Rays roster. Nevertheless, a necessary discussion. We can only hope for a positive outcome out of all of this with the team staying in Tampa or St. Pete. Really don't know what to think from day to day. Thanks to Evan, Ulises, and Kevin for all of the great coverage. Wishing you all the most joyous of holiday seasons.🎄
Good stuff, guys! They county did what they had to do so, I commend them. Stu needs to plow ahead, bring in a partner, or step aside completely. I agree with the sentiment that Manfred reassured the governing bodies that baseball is staying in TB with or without Stu. This was a win for baseball in the TB area. Now, let's get back to baseball to end the year and give this some time to cook out of the foreground.
I personally think that if Stu breaks this deal he will be force by MLB to sell the team because the commissioner was to confident saying the rays moving is close to none and talking about new owner I agree that they might make him sell to someone that can afford it.
I'm tired boss
We used to speak about baseball on this podcast.
@@LockedOnRays the good ole days!
Stu might want to move the team but what makes you think the MLB will allow it. It was MLB that told Stu to stop with the sister concept not Stu
This is exhausting, stay or go I don't care as a fan .
Yes, it is exhausting... But, you're a fan you do care if they stay or go... You are not going to stay a Rays' fan if they move to another State... Just ask A's fans if they are still fans of the A's...
@@marcsimon3275 It is mind boggling how this nightmare could be happening to another team and fanbase. We all saw what happened in Oakland. We are not even a year removed from that debacle. Guess it is a combination of $$$ & egos.
@@Elephant2024 I do think the A's situation will help the Rays... MLB took a media hit... It was a bad look for them... Now, Manfred almost looks like a hero changing No votes to Yes... His legacy can't allow this again... I think he will make sure this deal goes through... Even if it means either raising the loan to Rays... or forcing them to sell...
Paredes, Siri, Springs....How f ing stupid can this team be?
Springs should be back to full strength now.
Loved the promo for term life insurance - it is a very inexpensive way to provide security for your family. At 46, I took out a $700,000 15-year term policy (to supplement a $300,000 policy thru work) and I paid only $49.50 a month for the entire 15 years. It didn’t expire until I was 61 and my daughter was grown and through college. It gave me such peace of mind while my daughter was growing up and I was building my savings.
As much as i like this move i do wish they wouldve gotten an offensive bat in this trade. But cant wait to see what joe boyle brings to this team. Im sure he will give the rays some pump. I do believe Yandy will get moved sometime soon. Just do not want a repeat of last season where the offense wasn’t there.
The most amazing thing about this trade is that for the first time in almost four seasons it is the Sacramento, not Oakland A's, who are increasing their payroll adding an established major league player in exchange for prospects. This coming after their free agent signing of pitcher Luis Severino. Easily the highest salaried player on their team. From a Rays standpoint, this is low risk, potential high reward. Jeffrey Springs injury history and recovery from it makes him questionable at best. Don't know how much if he figured into their 2025 plans anyway. Same with Lopez. Boyle could be a good addition. Not sure about Simpson or Watters. I agree with Ulises that it would have been better if the A's had included at least one established major league bat in the trade.
Good stuff, guys! With Springs injury history, now was the time. Perfect storm w the A's needing to add salary. I understand the frustration, but the A's bats are cost controlled. They aren't parting w those guys for an injury risk like Springs. W the pick, this move is an A for me Yandy will likely be next out the door once Alonso and Walker are signed. I still think Fairbanks is heading out as well.
I’m a fan of Boyle and don’t mind this trade. But like you guys said, we need major league bats. Don’t know if I can stomach another season of Walls playing everyday
Boyle is really, really good! He has electric stuff and will be a MLB closer within 2 years. I love Springs, but Rays maxed out on the trade. Round A pick is so so big! Just hoping Springs can be healthy and the Springs we know. We will see….
I'm excited that they passed it, but I'm apprehensive about what happens next. I watched the whole meeting today (until they voted for the Rays stadium) man, they'll let anyone get up there and talk, huh? lol. I think Chris Latvala is a little... flawed in his belief and trust in Rob Manfred. After all, Manfred told Oakland that he believed in Oakland and that MLB would regret letting the A's walk out of Oakland. Manfred isn't to be trusted further than he can be thrown. That all said, the ball is now in Stu's court. If he was intentionally trying to tank the deal to get St. Pete or Pinellas to drop out in an attempt to keep the land and skip town, that ship has sailed. So now, we either move forward and the Rays get their stadium, or Stu knows that he's been beat and terminates the deal if he doesn't really want to be here and loses his 65 acres... As the Rays turn!
Watched 4 hrs. of county meeting. Bonds passed 5-2, the 2 newbies were the only no votes. Rays didn't even have representation there. Pretty apparent they are putting the ball back in Rays court. Also, Latvala commented that he spoke to Manfred, he is not happy with Stu and his antics and sort of said Manfred would prefer a new ownership.
Here’s my theory- they’re entertaining a Tampa offer that may he been on the table previously, before they chose the cheaper option in St Pete, but now that it’s not a cheaper option, they’re back to considering Tampa.
Guys. Love your podcast. I don’t think Chris L is a swing vote. It looks to me like Eggers could be the guy, so long as Rays show proof of meeting their contractual obligations. If the Rays don’t show proof of meeting their obligations, the commission will vote ‘no.’
Thanks, Douglas! Yeah, definitely could be Eggers as he has been quoted as saying he has "an open mind." Let's see what happens!
Don't understand why they trade Jeffrey Springs for more pitching prospects and don't land a bonified opening day Hitter? Payroll dumping again?
We go over this on tomorrow's episode.
City of St. Pete made a bad deal; they have to eat it. How many roadblocks will lay in the path to develop this 30-year project. Did Hines Construction have a bad feeling and pulled out their employees from St. Pete project.
The graphic shown here of the proposed Tampa stadium site has 6 fuel tanks, if you zoom out there are approx. 50 large fuel tanks next door. "Gas Worx " is an understatement.
Good stuff, guys! That's definitely a better spot for the stadium if there wasn't a whole "battery" like development project going on in St. Pete surrounding the stadium. I can't see the Rays backing out of all that $ to be made on that part of the project. They'd draw better in Ybor, but they'll be making $ on everything around the stadium in St. Pete. also Overall profitability, I believe, lands w the St. Petersburg project. If it was just about a stadium, they probably take less city/county $ to go to Ybor. I bet they wish they had a season in the books at Steinbrenner to see how much better attendance really would be. I wonder what their pre-sales look like. I'd rather see them stay in the Tampa area than go to another state, so if this deal falls through, hopefully, Ybor can become a real thing and fast.
It’s a no-brainer that the rays would do much better in Tampa than they would in Saint Petersburg, but I think Tampa city is saving up all their money and clout for the Buccaneers stadium renovations
Tampa stadium right next to all those massive fuel tanks??, hmm what could go wrong, reminds me of the old 80's video game "Zaxxon". Traffic and parking might be a challenge there. One radio personality (JP) is still saying there is a Tampa ownership group in play, and he is making fun of St. Pete and their deal and pushing the Tampa group. I don't agree with him. He is obviously sponsored by them somehow.
Folks can also plan a vacation to the top-rated beach around seeing their MLB team play a couple games, easier to get to and cheaper than their hometown.
8.5 they approve bonds
Even if Pinellas says No, there's nowhere for the Ray's to move to. That's why Manfried came to Pinellas. Nashville, Tn mayor just said in so many ways there's no talk of funding a MLB stadium, no public money. Unless Salt Lake Utah comes forward.
