"St. Petersburg owns the Trop and is responsible for repairs. After paying a $22.5 million deductible, the most the city could receive from insurance is $22 million." Who from the City approved an insurance policy that has $22 million deductible that only pays out a max of $22 million. The worst insurance policy ever. If the roof was 10 years past its service life, insurance might not pay anything for roof replacement.
I can't remember the source, but I read somewhere (Tampa Bay Times maybe?) that the city just very recently reduced the coverage to save on premium payments. If true that's just insane.
To my way of thinking, Stu Sternberg at present has a very positive legacy with this franchise because it was made much better on the field since he purchased the team from the way it was under Vince Naimoli. However, that goes away if this franchise skips town. For what it's worth Mr. Sternberg, don't let relocation become your legacy.
Unfortunately the owner doesn't care enough and neither do the surrounding counties. They are very selfish and won't work together for the greater good. If there was mass transit (like light rail in the area) more people would go to the games. Former Governor and current Senator Rick Scott also screwed the Rays and the Tampa Bays over by killing the high speed rail from Tampa to Orlando. (That money bought rail for Connecticut) otherwise fans from Orlando could even make it over for Rays games.
for the first time ever I am actually scared of this situation... I've always looked at the trop as our greatest asset though we hate it so much. As long as it existed, we had leverage against Stu to not leave because he'd have to find another location with a stadium ready which we had. Now we no longer have that leverage and the team could move to the first city willing to pay for it. This is crappy all around, it's a shady owner looking to make a quick buck off a city desperate enough to foot the bill while he reaps the rewards and a shady city that changed it's mind as soon as it finally had a deal that would change the whole landscape of the city. After years and years of blocking Hillsborough county from any deals they tried to make with the Rays to move across the bridge. Now we have little to nowhere to build a stadium in Hillsborough county and not much time to come to any agreement since we don't have a stadium to realistically support them for years while we make the decision. I really can only see this going one way unless the Rays sell out every game at Steinbrenner and someone decides to invest in the stadium in Tampa which would probably would be best located on the lot that Raymond James is on where the Yankees practice fields are.
The County commission has 2 newly elected officials since election day Nov. 5th, that oppose the stadium deal. It was voted and approved in July- 5-2 for the deal, they were supposed to vote on bond issuance before the elections but postponed until after the elections. Now it will be 4-3 against the deal / bond issuance which kills the deal. Stu is not being a snake; the real snake is the sketchy county commissioners. Without the $330M bonds and ongoing delays, he is forced out.
Why should taxpayers foot the bill for a scam? Good on the people of the county who voted for sanity and not a cheap billionaire owner. The same people voted for Trump and voted for the new commissioners. They had to postpone the vote initially because of extenuating circumstances. One month later was the election. The owner should sell the team to a Tampa owner and build in Tampa paid by the owner.
Let’s be honest here- St Pete and Pinellas have been messing around with this for years. It’s not all about a couple hurricanes. St Pete endeavors to be a big city but they don’t act the part.
As an Expos fan you really don't want to be in the position of relying on MLB to do the right thing with an expansion team , trust me. I hope TB can keep its team and get a new park in Tampa as I've adopted them as my second team and the fans down there seem cool. Sucks that greedy owners and politics have to screw up everything.
Is it possible with the new mayor in Tampa (since they last tried to get a Stadium there) that they could leverage a deal with Tampa, if they can’t salvage things with Pinellas county? Losing the rays would be a huge negative thing for the region I imagine. They have to have this in consideration don’t they?
It's all about money then land. 1)How much money can Tampa offer Stu? In a perfect world, owners would foot 100% of the bill with no public money but we are not living in that world. 2)Where is enough land for the Rays to create something like they unveiled with Hines? There's A LOT more money to be made from the real estate redevelopment than there is from a new stadium.
@@LockedOnRaysbut can’t Stu use the money he makes from the redevelopment of the Trop site to help finance a stadium in Tampa? The Trop site will be redeveloped with or without a new ballpark.
Face it. Rays are as good as gone. Do you really believe Stu has the best interests of Rays fans in mind? 😂. It's all about his profit margin and bottom line. Call him a snake but his bank account is fat enough to help him sleep well at night. Here to Stay 😅 and some actually believed that.
@@steveanthony5530 I’m trying to be optimistic, it’s a shit show, but maybe they will figure something out between Hillsborough and Pinellas. Pinellas county is the one taking the heat here, if the rays leave that will have a negative impact for sure. Regardless of attendance there’s a lot more at stake
Heard they plan to demolish it in some years so what’s the point of rebuilding it especially since the city is putting in less than they thought and the cost of repairs are way higher than expected
Rays are in guys, not staying there for the long term. Stu will ultimately move them to Montreal if he can get the City and Province to build him a new stadium
As a Tampa area person and a huge baseball fan I have to say that the Trop was never in a great location and the stadium has always had that musty, old dark feel to it. People north of St. Pete dread traveling on a jam packed construction filled 275 south to get to that stadium. People from the east of Tampa do not want to drive 90 minutes to get to the Trop. The RAYS NEED to move to Tampa where there are tons more fans and where I-4, 301, 60, 275 and 75 all come into.
Be real he is a business man baseball is never gonna work in st pete. It needs to be on the east side of Tampa at least. Orlando would be better for them. Just look at the empty seats and low payroll. This hurricane is a big blessing to him. They need to move out. Plenty of cities want a team like Charlotte, Nashville, Salt Lake, Orlando and many others.
Because St Pete was offering a much more generous deal than the offer of public funding from Tampa. In short Tampa was being responsible with taxpayer money while St Pete was desperate with public money. The new stadium will not solve the Rays attendance woes. It’s a bad location.
The land next to the bucs stadium is where Steinbrenner field is. Immediately south is some grassy area and to the east is a giant parking lot. Bucs stadium is in essentially a residential area. I think it’s fair to say we residents of Hillsborough County would be opposed to financing a new Rays Stadium. Previous attempted plans in Ybor City went nowhere due to cost.
The roof was constructed to take a 115mph hurricane. That is not enough building in a Hurricane Zone. Also Rays has among the lowest attendance in MLB. Who is going to pay for the pleasure of watching baseball, if not the spectators and not the owner, the tax-payers? What is the long term cost/consequences for the county of not have a MLB team? loss of job, loss of tax etc.
The Rays don’t want to move and don’t want to play in Steinbrenner Field. They’ll do what they must. Thank you Yankees for giving up your stadium for a year. 🍻
Let them go. Nobody cares about baseball in Florida. Look at the Marlins. Brand new stadium thats always empty too. There is too much to do outdoors in Florida to be stuck inside a stadium for 80 games a year. Let them move to a desperate city up north.
