1972 Ford Maverick build begins / Fitting the engine and a 4R70W transmission
I finally get started on my 1972 Maverick. I work on fitting the engine and transmission as well as the headers. A few modifications need to be made along the way.

Two thoughts: One make a holder for your power pack so if you wanted to spread out the gravel one person could pull the truck ahead while you operate the winch. Two I would consider some angle supports to the mast in case you ever dump on a sloped surface. With the trailer angled and the bed up it will likley tip to the side and rip that mast loose. But if you insure your always on level ground not a problem.

Is there any point in replacing the gasket if the pan is still intact? Or is it best to just make sure it’s tight and re-torque if necessary?

Where to begin? I have 30+years of wrenching and fabrication. I've built more door slammers than The care to count. It's obvious you work on GM's crap. You used some of the "tricks" on putting a transmission in. It gets hard to watch. Removing ANY of the bracing the factory put in, is, bottom line, crazy. This is a unibody. Shade tree guys have fits trying to figure out what the factory did. The simple fact that it's a survivor, makes it extra special. You removed a major brace for the floor. Yes, it was in your way. Any AOD based transmission is large on the exterior. I say that from knowing how easy a c4 fits. And yes, your trans is a variant of the AOD. The biggest difference, electronically controlled. Any 302 of the cars vintage, was flat tappet. The 5.0 version has roller cams. Other than that, pretty much everything will work. You got a motor that somebody sunk a lot of change into. Bore, cleaning, line honing, mains and cam, ain't cheap. I'd put money on the clearancing is only halfway finished. If you were smart, you'd locate a roller 5.8 block. The cam will work in it. I built a 302 for my own project. I didn't scrimp on parts or block work. Every bit of the flash has to come out. Chamfer EVERY edge. That's called, in laymans terms, stress relieving the block. I would also bet you've never heard of the big problem the 5.0 blocks have. If you get north of 500 HP, the block can /will crack down the cam tunnel, front to back. The heads and cam you've gotten t shouldn't get there but at the same time, why ruin a good block? I said the 5.8 is a better choice. They don't share the 5.0's problems. A stock, factory block has its limits. If you want to blow me off, have fun. You won't get sympathy from me. It's obvious my two cents are just that, two pennies. There are ways to make a sbf hold up to abuse. Stroking a block, is, by definition, abusing it. It wasn't made with crazy out puts in mind. They followed Henry's idea of longevity and work production. Stock head, block, crank, are NODULAR IRON. That's the factory's "wonder" metal. The use of nickel in the castings, made them hard to kill. But, they can be. Anything man made can/will fail. Murphy's law applies. And it'll be at the worst possible place. If you were smart, find a book on block prep and follow the directions, to a tee.

Flash back! Twelve y/o in 1977. Mom had that car. Drove me around with AM radio on. Went to a new fast food place called Taco Bell. You walked up to the window to order tacos which were less than a dollar a piece and sat at a picknick table and ate it. I remember thinking while sitting in the passenger seat "why did mom buy such a piece of s**t car???"

Wally, I'm very familiar with a 72 maverick, I've never seen a non-grabber with 5 lug wheels. The common 6 cyl arrangement was 4 lug. I agree that's not the original spoiler but the other parts scream grabber. If it was built as a 6 cyl someone has been swapping parts.
