I may have RUINED this door welding in patch panels! / DIY rust repair.

- I attempt my own rust repair on a 1957 GMC 100 pick up. I had some big challenges installing these panels and was very frustrated at the end.

Fitzee’s cut and butt video is pretty informative. Hope it all turned out well for you.
You tube is a good resource. Take a look at some of the Canadian people. Karl Fisher, Fitzee fabrication are two of the best. I had a chance to see those trucks when they were brand new. I'm doing a 56 ford f-100 right now. Remember that you don't need top of the line tool to accomplish the mission. I've collected many in my 59 years as a mechanic. You are doing ok.

You learned the most important lesson, the rust is hiding and it goes farther than you can tell.
I love watching all these videos on utube seeing how many silly ways people try to repair metal 😅 sometimes I tell people how to do it but who knows if they listen o well just be lucky its not aluminum 😅

Coming along great, there's a phrase that goes we live and learn. Start from the outer door skin, you'll have better access to hammer and dolly. Good luck.
Wally, you could always try the dolly on a stick to reach that seam. Gives you some more reach.

I use the metal cut off wheels on my angle grinder, the wheels seem to last a lot longer, they cut little slower, but sometimes that's a benefit for reasons....
i wouldn't cut that skin . you will have to put more heat into it after planish it.
to weld it back up. i would try a shrink disc. i have one you could borrow/buy to see if that helps (I'm in phoenix)that seam. more heat usually doesn't fix heat damage.

Good Job Wally,🤠👍 I have the same rust issues with my doors and I'm learning what not to do by watching you first. I hope you succeed repairing the doors but if you screw them up you can always buy new ones. I would think I would cut a large access panel on the inside to get my hands in. Weld the access panel back up when finished and eventually fabricate and add an upholstered interior panel over it to cover the crime.😎

I’ve learned the hard way, when u go through the trouble of getting a new panel, just use the whole thing. Because it’s new metal, simply because there may be no holes in a certain area doesn’t mean that particular metal isn’t compromised.. from previous body work, heat etc… if you got the panel, use it.. your going through the repair process anyway… sheet metal is sheet metal.. the metal is no different if the metal is from USA or china.. your future self will thank you. 💯💯💯

@@wallysworkin823 you can also tell when you look at a new panel that the manufacturer put some thought into where the panel stops and starts trying to help the person using it, the more you see new panels you’ll begin to notice that.. looking forward to seeing the truck get done.. and don’t be afraid to put glass filler over those welds to smooth things out.. I heard you mention carter auto.. and that guy is amazing.. I think he was tapping on metal with a hammer his first day outside the womb.. and I know metal finished is always the desired path, but glass filler over welds is a standard in redoing these old rides.. don’t be scared of that, just make sure you’re scratch / etch is correct before applying it and you’ll be good. Keep up on the vids.. shoot for one show a week that drops the same day every week and episode time around an hour.. I watch most every auto show on the tube and that seems to be the winning method.. 💯
Don’t split the door edge It would be easier to cut a hole on the inside panel then weld it back in
Honestly since you have the rest of the other patch panel from the otherside, I would cut an access hole since that metal is rusty anyways and planish it that way, taking the edge skin off is not a good idea since you need it to be rigid.

It would have been easier just to make your own patch panel for the bottom of the door, I have.
wally. get a can or two of weld thru primer. it will give you a layer of protection to that newly exposed metal on the inside. if it was easy everybody would it! keep at er! looking good.

Hey Wally’s working I know this is off topic but I have a redmax ebz8560 that’s a year old and today I’ve noticed that when I try to go full throttle it stutters to go to full throttle and it doesn’t it multiple times through when I’m using my unit

Wally , we need to have a few beers and talk , YOU LIVE IN ARiZONA !!!!!!!!! you call dessert valley auto parts, or hidden valley auto parts and they drop a door off at your house !!!! your time is valuable. let me tell you the east coast law of rust 25 % of it you can see 75 % of it you will find when you try to repair it. What I do is send the parts out to be soda blasted /sand blasted and then let the customer decide what they can afford I have sent a truck load of cash out to Arizona to buy parts because of the labor to fix a 60 +year old part I have bought 1/2 of fenders just not to use off shore patch panels ... but with that said if there is a gun to your head? you buy a whole aftermarket door and transfer all the inner door parts. (your time is valuable ) and then you cut/ Weld the new door and develop all the gaps to make it right because it is the lesser of two evils with the labor but with that said.... I admire your sprite and you have now been baptized in rust.... And you are now in the club ....and your are amongst friends Stay well
I’m stubborn, I took this on because I want to learn. I haven’t ruled out getting new doors Lol. These are AZ doors, everything else around here I looked at was in similar condition. I think all the good stuff has been picked over. For now I’ll keep digging. Thanks for watching.
Greetings and blessings, I have a 1957 Chevrolet 3100 and I have a 2000 S10 chassis, how can I know the exact measurements to put the kit on?thank you
I don’t believe they make a kit for an s10 under a 55-59. The chassis’s a little too small. A C10 or Tahoe frame fits much better.
