Is this juniper bonsai dead or alive? What does a dormant tree look like? Bonsai For Beginners Ep 12
It's that time of the year where we get many people bringing in their tree asking for help because it looks dead. Knowing if your bonsai is dormant or not can be tricky, but luckily we have a few tips to share. The information in this video pertains ONLY to outdoor trees here in the PNW climate. If you are looking for information for tropical trees, this is NOT the video for you.
Keep in mind, some trees dormant faster than others, but the one thing you should NEVER do is bringing it indoors where it's warm. We've seen it too many times where a new owner thinks the tree is deteriorating in health, so they bring it inside to "warm" it up. It will only wake it up from it's dormant phase pre-maturely. The tree may look great for a month or two, but overtime, it will downgrade in health before it ultimately stops being a tree.
You can simply look at the bottom of the needles and see if there is any green. If you see green, then your tree is just dormant. If there's no green, then it's probably damaged.
You can also cut off a thin layer of the bark off the trunk of the tree. If you see green in the tissue, your tree is fine! If it's all brown or have no color, then it's most likely damaged.
Watch this video and let us know what how many of the examples you got correct!

Three easy principals for juniper bonsai care. Bonsai For Beginners EP 11.
มุมมอง 808วันที่ผ่านมา
Many people who receive a bonsai as a gift over the holidays receive a juniper. We have seen horrible instructions on how to care for junipers (like keeping it indoors or watering it just once a week), so we wanted to make this video to clearly explain what you need to do to care for a juniper. Caring for a bonsai really isn't that hard, but you must know three things. 1. Temperature 2. Lightin...

Bonsai For Beginners 10: How fast do bonsai trees grow?
มุมมอง 70321 วันที่ผ่านมา
We often get asked how fast to bonsai trees grow. Often times, beginners want to purchase a small tree and grow into a large tree. Keep in mind, growing from a small tree to a large tree isn't necessarily what the art of bonsai is about. The art of bonsai is training the structure of the tree. So how fast do bonsai trees really grow? Well, it depends on the type of tree of course. If we never t...

Bonsai is often given as a gift over the holidays. In this video, Robert shares some things to consider when gifting a bonsai. Just because you spent more for a bonsai, that doesn't necessarily make it a good quality bonsai. The same goes for the size of the bonsai. Gifting a large bonsai that is planted in bad quality soil will only lead to disappointment. Purchasing a tree online and not rese...

Amazing. I have just started the hobby of Bonsai and this is exactly what I want to produce. The finished tree and setting looks really good. I am now inspired to go and create my own. Question - I am in the UK. Can I create something like this indoors now it is winter and move it outside when it is completed? Greg - UK
@@gregwatkiss8973 it depends on what the temperature of your indoor workshop is. I wouldn't recommend working in a workshop where the room temperature is 70F/21C. Too much warmth can pull the tree out of its dormant phase. And of course, try to minimize the time it spends in your workshop.
@@AsiaPacificGarden Thank you for the advice. At the moment our temperatures are low at 3-5c during the day but I tend to leave my workshop outside door open in the day to let my dog come and go as like to spend a lot of his time outside in our garden. So the the room tends to be cool at most times. It is possibly not a good idea to start on a tree just now as we are having heavy frosts and some snow is forecast in the next few days. Would you say that I should wait until it becomes milder?
Do they tolerate subzero temperatures? Fahrenheit
@@1020J we've experienced temperatures as low as 15F before and our junipers were fine. It really depends on where you're at and how long the subzero temperature stays for. I would recommend looking for a bonsai club in your area and see what they do in your climate. Remember, each climate can vary drastically. Just because one method works in one area, doesn't mean it should be applied to another area.
My landscaper pruned my Japanese Maple into a mushroom😢. I’m going to try and learn from you this year. Would you mind telling me if it is a good time to prune late Winter, early Spring? Thank you!
@@ruthwilkerson9386 we generally don't prune in winter primarily because of weather. Secondly the tree is deep in its dormant phase and may not have enough energy to heal the heavy pruning. We typically start pruning here in the Seattle area from late February and go into November. Landscapers like to prune into a mushroom because it's fast and easy, but true beauty takes time and effort. We have more maple pruning videos under our "Out in the Field" playlist on our channel! Hope these help.
I’m so glad I found your channel! Great teachers! Thank you!
What variety of Juniper did you use in this video? Its a great idea! I have a nursery stock blue rug Juniper, but its branches don't look mature enough to do this?
@@carolewald5075 we used a procumbens nana juniper for this. If your branches don't look mature enough, I would recommend you let it grow a bit more. Bonsai is supposed to teach patience and this is one of the reasons!
Hi, I just received a Juniper as a Christmas present, purchased from an indoor shop. I live in Brooklyn , NY so it is winter here. It happens to be in the low 50s today, but I’m wondering if Zi should bring it outside after being indoors. It missed the fall season. Will bringing it outside now cause it confusion or harm it?
@@nja3224 yes, this should go outside. 50s is perfectly fine for it to adjust for winter. Some of our junipers still haven't gone dormant. Depending on the area of NY you are in, it can get some extreme winter conditions. One of our earlier videos (Bonsai For Beginners 2) talks about Juniper Winter Care and it mentions what some bonsai experts do for extreme winters. Keep in mind, the information provided in this video pertains to procumbens juniper. While rare, there are a handful of junipers from tropical climates (barbadensis, jaliscana, and cedrus just to name a few).
@ - Thank you!
I’m in awe. I just received a juniper bonsai for Christmas so I’m watching videos to learn about them and how to care for them. I know the Juniper is different from this tropical species but I have to say, when I saw you cutting everything off and pulling good leaves off, I’m thinking he destroyed this tree! But, your explanation of why, and the analogy used was brilliant. 6 weeks later its appearance is wonderful. Great knowledge, I’ve already watched a few other videos on this channel. After this comment I’m going to subscribe. Thanks again.
@@nja3224 thanks for the sub! Yes, the information here pertains strictly to tropical trees. Doing this to a juniper will give you drastically different results.

Hello! I recently got a Juniper Bonsai tree, and I live in an apartment where I get no daylight, but my balcony never gets direct sunlight. I purchased a grow light to help with this. What steps should I take to keep my bonsai healthy? Thank you!
@@giovaniramirez8919 your tree just needs to be outside. Junipers can be grown under shade, so no direct sunlight isn't terrible. If you're using grow light, just make sure it's the right spectrum and that you're not using a grow light that is designed for desert plants. We will be posting a video tomorrow with some more details. Stay tuned!
