MASSIVE 16 feet wide maple tree styled as a bonsai! Watch what happens!

- Here we present a 16 FEET WIDE maple tree that has never been serviced. This took us about 7 hours worth of work. Most maple trees we work on often time creates a security issue where it blocks your line of sight from the front porch. It even blocks security cameras or your ring doorbell as you can't see if someone is creeping up to your front door. Trimming these big trees as a bonsai not only makes your yard more beautiful while increasing the property value of your home, but it makes your home safer.
Watch thru this video as we explain briefly how we do the trimming to get to the final results. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต
I planted a Japanese maple in my parent’s back garden after my daughter was born. I looked after it for 25 years, it was breathtakingly beautiful. When they sold that house I cried because I had to leave my tree behind. I hope the new owners love it as much as I do.
@@lanelothian1925 leaving behind a beautiful tree is definitely a hard thing to do
I know many people prefer the bushy shape but I love seeing the branches exposed. They just seem so graceful to me. You did a fine job.
@@pennybourban3712 thank you!
Just beautiful.♥️👍
It is hard to believe that such a beautiful tree was hiding underneath all of those branches and leaves! It is stunning now! Like a work of art! ☺️
Thank you! Maples' true beauty are often hidden, this is why we love what we do. We've been trimming maples in our area for over a decade and it's always so rewarding driving past the trees we've worked on and admiring its beauty.
Wow! Wow! Wow! I am a bonsai artist and we have two untrimmed Japanese maple of the same specie in front of our house. You, sir, just gave me the motivation to follow your lead. thanks much.
We're excited for you to bring out the beauty of your maples!
Such a beautiful tree. So light and airy looking after it has been pruned. Well done!
@@susanbossert6833 thank you! Glad you think so. This was a fun one to work on.
Knowing nothing about tree shaping, i am amazed at how beautiful this was when you finished. Thank you!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I had to refresh my memory…I have 3 of these maples just like yours and 2 lime green ones with the same structure. In the fall they have unbelievable vibrant colors that I really wish lasted longer. They were already here when I purchased my home so I am not sure of the varieties. The previous owners left us a lot of transformation pictures of the property which I thought was pretty neat. The ones in the front yard were put in the early 70’s and they added through the back in the 80’s along with other types of maples, pines rhododendrons, Azaleas, Hydrangeas, roses fruit, nut trees…been here going on 8 years and still trying to figure out the plants and care needs. Extremely beautiful but also high maintenance…never ending. My first 2 years I just weeded, treated and fertilized so I could see what was coming up each season. I had a arborist come out and he was awe struck by the beauty. I had him come 3 different times and he taught me quite a bit. Very knowledgeable.
Beautiful. The saying "less is more" certainly applies here.
@@barbarabarker6753 the shadows it casts on the ground in the morning is breathtaking. We will update with a photo soon!
I would have never thought to prune my Crimson Queens or Red Dragons this way great video thank you

My first time seeing your work. The transformation is splendid.
@@88Bessie09 thank you!
I pruned a Japanese maple that was burned a bit from a house burning. We rebuilt the house all winter. In the spring the tree had new growth and was still healthy. I took a sawsall and oscillating tool to it and tried to follow some rules I learned from bonsai. The owner was thrilled with how it looked. I took off the dead stuff, the crossing branches and the ones facing in, and gave it a nice shape. Even my boss was impressed.
@@comfortablynumb9342 sounds like you're well equipped with the proper techniques! Love seeing other people bring out the beauty of these trees.

Sigh ... I miss maples! So beautiful to see its beautiful bones (branches) !
Nice to see this. I have a 25 foot wide, very old Japanese Maple. It looked just like this, completely overgrown. The tree had never been pruned. It looked beautiful when I was finished. An arborist friend came over and scolded me. He said the tree produces the leaves and growth it needs.
@@dnvpaul glad you pruned it! You should ask your arborist friend why he cuts his hair when the head produces the hair and growth it needs.
@@AsiaPacificGardenI don't cut any of my hair.
@@AsiaPacificGarden good point. That would have been a good comeback. Thank you.
I am emotional. Good job.
Beautiful how you opened up the canopy so the dark branches are visible. Very nice shape
That maple was absolutely HUGE😮, I love the layering
I love seeing the inner part of the tree and the beautifully shaped branches
We do too! This type of style is called Niwaki. It's basically applying a bonsai style towards a landscape tree.
I rather like it how it was. When I was a child that would have been a wonderful “secret” place inside those enclosing branches
This is another reason why we love trees. Every artist can appreciate the beauty depending on the style. While the style in this video may speak to certain individuals, there is still beauty to be found in the umbrella style. 100% agree with the secret place as Robert and Nolan have both climbed and hidden in many trees in the past.
I’m so glad I found you. I have one in my front yard. I’ve tried to do a bit of grooming. But it was so neglected before I moved in.
The first cut is always a bit nerve wracking! Happy to hear you gave it a go.

WOW! What an informative, wonderful lesson on how to prune a tree this large. I have done ok in the past pruning the 4 Maple trees we have, and thinning them out a bit was always something I did. I wasn't sure if it was right or wrong really, but seeing that you have done the same with this large of a GORGEOUS tree, made my heart happy. I love the overall effect you have achieved! So beautifully done. Thank you so much for sharing this video with 💛🖤💛us. Blessings to you and yours from the great Pacific Northwest, Lakewood Washington!

I've been doing the same thing for my cousins japanese maple. Only pruned it twice so far but it's looking much better than it was all over grown with some dead branches. In a year or 2 it should be in tip top shape. Very nice pruning in this video
Maples will definitely take a few cuts to reveal its true structure. Keep at it and thanks for the comment!
This is so helpful! We have lived in our home for 16 years and have watched our Japanese maple exceed the size of my car! It’s planted too close to the driveway, so I’ve carefully trimmed the thicker branches that hang over so they don’t scratch our vehicles, but it’s still so big that we named it Cousin It! Your video gives me hope that we can improve the shape and density and show off the gorgeous structure while still keeping it manageable!
@@ourtinyangels we're excited for you to try! Remember, even if you end up cutting the wrong branch, it'll eventually grow back. Just be patient

ABSOLUTELY STUNNING - you are a true artist! 🥰
@@gsr7772 Thanks for the kind words!
There were three shrubs in a hedge at front door. The yew still there, nearest to porch but now a tall screen and much shallower. The center winterberry is gone, 'though still trying with suckers. The messy corner red cedar was evergreen on top, but years of sides being vertically pruned left a gray-brown solid tangle of shedding bark. Just kept removing what I could with loppers, thinking to take it all down. But stopped when it became a (now five ft.) giant bonsai with windblown 'cypress' umbrella of healthy branches over two curving trunks, each about 4 in. diameter. So glad I did not just saw it off at ground level🤗
@@ruthbowman5928 it's so incredible how different a tree can look with some pruning and a different perspective. A windblown cypress sounds beautiful!
I have 2 trees this size and I have pushed off working on them because they are so large and I wasn’t sure how they should look when done. This is a big step up from working on a tree 12” tall. Thanks for showing me what I need to do!
@@Me-Myself-Ann glad we could share this technique!
Inspiring. I have a maple that has never been pruned in 15 years and it is a lovely umbrella. But I plan on peeking inside at the trunk. I believe I'm going to follow your lead to open it up---just for fun. It'll be a great experiment for me. Thank you. Love Japanese maples.
Happy to hear you're going to give it a try! Maples can take heavy trimming. There is one we service every year where we defoliate up to 80% of the leaves and it's perfectly healthy. Plus if you cut the wrong branch, it'll grow back so fast so it doesn't matter! Practice makes perfect.

Beautiful tree, both before and After. pruning. I have seven Japanese maples, but none of them are that big as they are in pots, I have no room to plant them all out.
If they're in small 1 gallon or smaller pots, make a maple forest bonsai! Just make sure you do this during its dormant season.

Another reason why we find tree work so fascinating. We find beauty in both the umbrella style and the niwaki (landscape bonsai) style. We've trimmed several trees in the umbrella style upon customer requests and it's commonly seen in yards, but we wanted to showcase this style because it shows beauty in a different way.
