Did these lost swarm bees make a queen?

    Open feeding is NOT cool if anyone else has a hive within 3 mile radius; Keep your feeding inside your own hives

  • @raterus
    @raterus 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    What you're seeing here are orientation flights. It really has nothing to do with a nectar flow. You can tell because they start out by climbing up the side of the hive, then they take off and do figure 8 flights in front of the hive.

    • @ronniedaniels4587
      @ronniedaniels4587 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Im gonna have to disagree with you. I know what orientation flights look like. Its hard to tell in the video, but bees are steadily coming in from out flying, and bees are shooting out of the hive to go forage.

    That was some amazing brood. You might want to get a few wind socks and put them in front of some of your hives. The hive as a whole gets used to the motion and then when a person comes around they're less likely to get popped.

    How can you tell the queen is mated?

    • @ronniedaniels4587
      @ronniedaniels4587 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a number of ways to tell. Usually her abdomen will be larger than a virgin queen. Virgin queens have skinny abdomens and can fly very well, where mated queens cant fly as well. But the easiest way I tell is just look for eggs and larvae. If i see eggs and larvae, I usually dont even look for the queen.

I found my hive to be queenless recently and I was all set to go get another queen. My mentor explained how we had time and resources we could get the bees to make another queen. Yes, it took a couple of weeks and a few manipulations but now this hive is thriving with a lovely placid colony and filling frames with honey so quickly that I will be harvesting my first honey this weekend! I also have at least one place in the spacing big enough to get my riding mower through. When I cut behind the hives I come in between 2 hives and zoom on behind them and then get out of there before they get testy.

    Wax moth are the cleanup crew. If there is any sort of sickness in the comb due to eggs or larvae left behind or some other cause the wax moth move in and clean that up. This is why you don't see them in every frame of comb. I only ever recall seeing them in brood comb from dead outs and comb that has come from someone else in a nuc, which tells me there was something unhealthy in those frames of foundation.

Usually when they are robbing, robber bees will be trying to get in everywhere-the top, cracks, etc. one thing I have noticed is when a hive is being robbed and you take the top an inner cover off, robber bees will come flying out. Also, look for wax cappings on the hive floor and landing board.

I think maybe the opening was tiny and way more workers wanted to work than the restriction allowed. It looks great this afternoon. Also, maybe the extra air flight in front too maybe be for queen going and returning (if she isn't mated) ... but she might be. I saw her this am.. first time I have seen a queen live with my own peepers. Pics might show some larvey but not sure. I might not have been able to see inside the cells for eggs.
