Just a chap with an OM-5 doing various photography.
I'm not a professional or amateur or hobbiest photographer, I do things things my way . Uploads will come once in a while or when i can be bothered.
I don't want to be a film star.
If you leave a shit comment, you will get twice as bad back .
Keep it sensible, I take photos my way. The opinions are my opinions . If you disagree with anything i do or say , only you care because no one else will, especially me.

OM-5 Wildlife settings. omsystems
Hello and welcome to what will be the last video of the year.
I said that I would ,once I got the hang of things , go through the wildlife settings I have chosen that work for me on my OM-5 for wildlife settings, and I think I have nailed it . Remember, these are my wildlife settings that work for me .If you have got different settings than mine, It does not make mine wrong, but I'm open to suggestions of how to tweak my om-5 wildlife settings.
I go to my favourite nature reserve in the cotswolds to record this youtube video, and the water level was high after the two storms that have swept across the uk recently.
Lastly, I would like to wish you all a happy Christmas and New Year, and I will be back in the new year , I will probably kick off with a whats in my bag video ,now that I have all the lenses I need for my om5 .
Thank you all for your continued support. Have a good one.

Love the video and images. I’m a little reluctant to post this comment as it might be construed the wrong way, it is by no means meant as a criticism or to give the impression I’m a pedant or know it all. Simply to make sure that people who are unfamiliar with the OM-System cameras won’t get the wrong impression, go out and buy one for a specific use case and find out it doesn’t work the way they expected. Specifically where you took the image of the foreground fern with the yellowing trees in the background where you said you had hi-res and focus bracketing enabled. Both of these modes are computational and the camera will only allow one computational mode at a time. On the OM-5 it’s a little misleading as the menu system will show both as active but in reality the focus bracketing will override the hi-res mode. You can verify this by looking at the icons displayed on the rear screen, only BKT will be displayed. On the OM-1’s the menu system will automatically disable one or the other and show this in the menu system. It’s also worth mentioning that there are two focus ‘bracketing’ modes, straight bracketing where the camera simply takes a number of exposures from front to back shifting the focus by the differential until all exposures are taken (up to 99 on the OM-5) or infinity has been reached, and stacking which is limited to 8 exposures that also creates a composite processed jpeg image as well as the individual exposures. In the stacking mode the camera takes the initial exposure at the specified focus point, moves closer to the camera for two exposures, skips the starting point then moves away from the camera for the remainder of the shots. I know your video isn’t targeted at technical aspects and hope I haven’t offended you (or anyone else for that matter) by posting this and apologise profusely if I have but I love the OM-System cameras and respect the fact that you showcased one in your video. Regards, Pete
Hello pete . Yes you are right , I did wonder if this was the case after I got home from doing this , it does seem that it's one or the other and not both, but wouldn't it be great if you could though. I've not had the camera long, and let's face it, I'm still a newbie at M43 and welcome advice and tips from more well established M43 users. I absolutely love the om-5 , it is a great little camera that suits my style extremely well . You haven't offended in any way and appreciate your comment . Kind regards Joe.
@ thanks Joe, I appreciate that. Agree it would be good if they could combine some of the computational features but I doubt if they’ll ever do it though. If you think about how they’d have to do it, it would require heaps of processing and buffer (memory) especially if you stack them in camera. Imagine processing up to 99 (in the OM-5) and 999 (in the OM-1) hi-res shots in a bracket, the camera would be busy for a long time. Plus if you have a reasonably long shutter the hi-res shots take a long time to expose as well. The OM-5 took a lot of stick when it was released but I think it’s a terrific camera, all of the OM cameras are such fun to use.
Nice video. My new OM5 turned up today, so I'm excited to start using it. Your photos look great👍
Your going to love it. Don't listen to the nay sayers it's a great camera, just to put you at ease, I've dropped mine 3 times with lens attached ( because I'm a half wit) and still works and has not damaged it. Although I would carry it with a neck strap or wrist strap , the tripod screw is not all that clever, and some people have had it ripped out when attached to a capture clip / rucksack camera clip. Thank you for watching. Regards Joe.
@Wessexphotography... Thanks for the reply. If I got the cheap L bracket that you use, would that stop the tripod thread insert being an issue?
To be honest ,I wouldn't like to say ,I've never used one . I got the L-bracket for the extended grip feature . And when I go on hikes I put it in my jacket pocket with the Panasonic 14mm f2.5 attached and the 40-150mm f4-5.6 ii in my other pocket. But would i personally trust it? probably not .
@@Wessexphotography... OK cool. Is the 40-150 the plastic fantastic? Looks like a used price bargain 👌👌
It is the plastic fantastic, small lightweight and really surprisingly sharp. Just don't drop it 🤣🤣

Absolutely stunning work. Especially like the 2nd photo in. Excellent composition on this piece as well as the rest of your work! You are gifted for capturing amazing compositions and overall beauty of your surroundings!!!Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much. That's very kind of you to say. But I'm my own worst critic. 🤣🤣
Awesome mate. About shooting underexposed vs overexposed on the OM-5: In my experience Olympus can recover highlights better than shadows. Bringing up shadows creates a more "muddy" colour shift in post, so on my OM-5 I usually expose more for shadows and bring down the highlights if needed. Also, just got to say you got a very beautiful woodland with amazing colours.
Hello Jimmy , thank you for popping by. I'm afraid that underexposing is a habit I've brought along from my Nikon days , I've really got to think more about micro four thirds ,and it's capabilities, I shall endeavour to try this out on my next video .
I really appreciate you use the OM-5 for wildlife photo and share with us, because all other wildlife photographers use the OM-1 !! So I subscribed. And I have the OM-5 and 100-400mm also (all new) and I can't wait to make my first shoots when the waether gets nicer ... 😁👍
Thank you for the sub. 👍. The OM-5 is a very capable wildlife camera, and paired with the 100-400 mm is a super lightweight combination. I've had a lot of fun shooting wildlife with this camera . As far as the OM-1 is concerned, I was going to get that, but I opted for the lightweight and portability of the OM-5 , a decision I am glad I made. Have fun with it , and have fun with photography, and find your own style. Thank you for watching.
Brilliant

Thank you, Thomas . Greatly appreciated. Thank you for popping by .
so much better without light
I had to look back on the video to see what I asked 😂.
Hi Joe. What is the L bracket you are using on that OM-5 please?
Hello Robert . I managed to get one on Alli Express, and it cost me £13. It's solid made and fits well , the side bit is removable, which I have now done, and it's got an extension to the grip built in . I got it for the grip feature and to help protect it a bit when I drop it, which I have done twice 🙄. Just search L bracket OM-5 on Alli express
Nice things with om lenses is many are close focusing.
I was absolutely surprised at how close this went to the subject , but for me, still no substitute for a macro lens , hence, the 60mm f2.8 macro will be joining me in the new year.
I use the 100-400 on the older E-M1 M2. Super solid cameras and great features.
Not really given this lens a really good field test . If I'm honest, I am still trying to set my OM-5 up for wildlife that works for me , especially with birds in flight.. but that's all the more fun trying to figure it out.
Just found you today. Subbed, thumbs up, and I'll try to comment when I see your videos.
Hello, Jeffrey. Thank you for taking the time . All subs are welcome , and thank you for commenting.
The depth of field on micro four thirds at any given aperture is exactly equivalent to the same aperture and focal length on full frame when the camera and lens are shot from the same location. The difference comes into play when the identical field of view captured is equal with the same focal length lens on the two systems causing the micro four thirds user to back away from the subject to obtain the same f.o.v therefore increasing the d.o.f. 2.8 on 35mm is 2.8 on 35mm, no matter the system.
Isn't that what I said 🤔. But not as indepth.
Thanks for sharing your experience Joe.... great results... cheers from Australia 🦘🦘😊
Thank you Robert. I was pleased with the results. Had fun editing them also.
Thanks, Joe. Great photos. 😀
Thank you Brian. And for watching 👀.
Wonderful photos! I just acquired an older Olympus EM-5 to test it, also on mushrooms and nature things. This small-photography in nature is so interesting because you see so small details and small critters also! I also use the Nikon 1 system for small things photography, it is lovely but in lowlight it becomes really difficult.
Being new to the "MFT" family , I was really quite surprised at how close the 12-45 f4 focused , I did use the Sigma 150mm macro with my Nikon kit , but this 12-45 really surprised me , having looked back on my photos I could have used longer exposure times on a couple but like yourself this is an ongoing learning curve, especially as I found out I can do focus bracket in 50 and 80mp mode. Absolutely mind blowing. Thank you for watching .
@@Wessexphotography yes indeed, the learning curve is much longer on those kind of photography than on pure wildlife. With birds, mammals and flying insects, you really depend a lot on the animals themselves. With small nature things - even small-moving invertebrates - you can use bracketing, long exposures, creative compositions, that really is totally new! And what I find really interesting is that, as you said in your introduction, you don't really have to go very far. Thanks a lot for sharing your experiences!
Thanks Joe for sharing your experience with great comments and results....I don't do a lot of macro pics but maybe I should as my arthritis gets the better of me so restricts my movements.... cheers from Australia 🦘🦘😊
As you might already know , i to have arthritis in both my knees and left foot, so I completely understand you in that respect . I can not go as far as I used to, that's for sure . But when I'm out with my camera, and it may be a psychological thing, but the pain and restriction seem to go . But pay for it the following day but in my mind it was worth it.. Thank you for watching
Very enjoyable, thanks.
Yor welcome. And thank you.
Have a grandchild or a friend join you and carry the gear. I have a Nikon Z9 and believe it's the best camera ever made. I hope your arthritis improves and you feel better. Glad you are still shooting. I have taken up shooting birds. So much fun and the Nikon 400 mm 4.5 is the lightest long prime that I have ever tried so far. How do you like the new cat do you miss your Nikon gear?
Hello to you. To answer your question, do I miss my Nikon gear. No, not really, but I do miss the fast focus and the 3 AF- on buttons i had of my D500. Grandkids is a problem , I have 8, and choosing one would start World War 3 with them plus the wife would shout " favouritism". It really not worth ruining the quiet life I have made for myself. 🤣🤣🤣
Makes sense to me…and it’s nice to do videos that YOU want to do! I’ve thought about moving to OM5 as well. Long hikes, rugged Mtns and both space and weight are important. Hadn’t really considered it for birding, but I do a bit of other wildlife on occasion.
For long hikes ect ,it is the mutts nuts , plus 50mp handheld raw ,which I used all the time on dartmoor no need for a tripod( 7.5 stops ibis) unless you plan on doing night sky and 80mp images. It is great fun to use . For bird hide, it's great 👍, but for birds in flight, I've been reconfiguring a few things in camera and will try it out again soon.. Thank you for watching.
Good decision, congratulations. Could you do something about the strap fittings to the camera? It will destroy the camera body over time. I use a similar clip-on system and placed a piece of leather in between to protect the camera... Best Siegfried
I don't, as a rule, use a strap that much. The only reason I did on this trip was i thought i packed my lopro pouch that fixes to my rucksack strap . Well, I didn't pack it, and this strap was in the boot of the car .
I have just done the same though for a Leica M10
Nice choice sir.. 👌
You can walk 15 miles with arthritis? I'm 63 and I've got osteoarthritis - I can barely walk twenty yards!
Yes i can thank you, I'm not one for letting an ailment dictate how my life is run.. if I do i will go bat shit crazy.
Hi! Interesting to see that you moved to micro4thirds camera, I´m thing the same and I´m now using a Nikon D500 with tamron 150-600 and my point is to get something that´s small and easy to take out and use. So I´m thinking about buying a OM-1 mark 1 maybe, but I have to sell my Nikon gear first.
I get it, I really do. I could of got the om1, but I really wanted small and light that could do everything I wanted and shoot the genres I shoot. The OM_5 was the logical choice for me, after all what cameras out there weigh 414grams that shoot 30fps and can shoot 50 and 80mp raw images with 7.5 stops ibis..
I use Nikon D500, Fujifilm XH1 and then Xpro1 and X-E1. Then for video Gopro9.
I use a gopro 9 for video with the media mod and a wireless microphone. But when I'm hiking its kept simple with the gopro 8 and a couple of rycot windjammer on the mics.
Always takes a while to get your kit set up the way you like it. Looks like a fine camera to me 🙂
It is a great camera, with lots of bells and whistles to keep you occupied, that and a small form factor and lightweight.
Great video. Think you have made a wise choice. I am a Nikon DSLR shooter and am also feeling the weight of my equipment. Micro 4/3 has significant advantages in terms of weight ant telephoto reach. Maybe the focussing can't compare to your D500 but to be fair few DSLR's can either. Am sure you will adjust to the OM-5 and it's quirks as all cameras have. If I could afford it I would probably make the same switch.
This is a very good comment John , and I thank you for it. You are, of course, right about the D500 focusing , and theirs me trying to compare apples to pears 🙄. As far as wildlife photography goes for the om5 , it is actually a very capable camera at doing the job, and I've no issue with it. It is, however, BIF shots ( birds in flight) , I've been thinking about this a lot, and I've come up with quite a few ways to achieve the results with BIF ,that i will try out, but won't be for a couple of weeks now . Thank you for watching.
Congratulations on the change. I am new to your 'list' and look forward to more. I consistently click the 'like' button when I've seen a video - so I can remember which ones I've seen - I'm 72 now. I have been using Olympus (now OM-System) since 2003. While it was called e-System I had 4 zooms covering from 7 to 200 mm + a 50 mm f:2.0. When the om-d em-1 came out, I switched immediately, and have since continuously changed the lenses to the m-series. I have an OM-1 with an 8-25 and 40-150 mm both f:4.0 which is what I take on trips/holidays. I am mostly into landscapes, which is why the long focal lengths are not so necessary. I chose OM-1 because the ergonomics - then I have to live with the weight. However, I have a 75-300 mm, but am not too happy with it, as it becomes a bit 'soft' after the 200 mm. In addition, I have 45 and 75 mm, both f:1.8 and both for family photos/portraits. So, all in all, I have what I need - in low light, I have PureRaw on the computer, so if the image is exposed correct, ISO 6,400 is fully usable.
It's always nice to read what other people have used over the years. When I was Nikon and canon, I had a severe case of gas .( Gear acquisition syndrome ). Alot of lenses and bodies. Going in this direction and re- evaluating myself as a photographer, in the way of what I need . I sat down in from on my laptop and looked at focal lengths I used most , so now I've 4 lenses 12-45 . 45 f1.8 . 60mm f2.8 macro . 100-400. I will add a 17mm f1.8 in the future to give me a nice lens to do multiday hikes with , that way the camera will fit in my pocket and nearly equivalent 35mm..
Moved to M43 7 years great cameras and great lenses OM1 and 150 -400 stella combo

@bolleolympus . Shit . After all this time, I've just got your youtube tag 🙄. In that case, my reply is.. I knew you'd like it 😅😅
I hear some great birders here in Houston are going the same route as you; OM-5 and Olympus 400mm lens. Thanks for the info.
It is a small lightweight compact system.
I enjoy your warts and all approach and we share much the same ethos. The only difference is your results are better than mine but that's something im working on
Come come Garry, we are all our own worst critique.
That's the road I went down: Nikon to Olympus EM5 and the 12-40mm lens and the 40-150mm lens. Once you get used to it, it's a great system. I've worked my way up to the OM1 OM Systems mk1, and that 100-400 lens is great. It took me about six months to finally get the hang of it. Stay in there; you'll love it in the end.
I love it already. And yes I've alot to learn in this camera , but that's the fun bit 😄.
Screw that sony 6700 sony 200-600 and you are set. I love that for my wildlife setup..
What do you want, a medal

This is the sort of banter I like. Well done sir.
I have an Oly M10 mk 1 and have been thinking about upgrading. I like the sound of taking the faff out of using physical ND & grad ND filters with the virtual ones...
I didn't use ND filters, only a neutral CPL filter, four stops in reality is enough for me because I rarely used them but for most 4 stops probably wouldn't be enough. In video the shot of the waterfall was done at 1.30 in the afternoon with overhead sun using the inbuilt ND's.
I don't blame you for downsizing! I used to haul loads of lenses around. Through much experience I have settled for a 28mm, 50mm and 90-230mm zoom and my old Pentax K110D. They do everything I need. No stabilization or tripod. Use your body or your surroundings to steady your shots. Travel light❤
I have the EM1.3 & EM1X for my wildlife/macro 100-400 leica & 60mm olympus macro lens they dont miss a heart beat love them. looking forward to your journey.
Thank you for commenting, I'm going to put a question to you.. would you have 17mm f1.8 or 60mm macro. I can only have one. The wife won't let me have both 😔 😕.
@@Wessexphotography 60mm macro is an amazing/sharp lens you will not be dissapointed at all.
@@Wessexphotographypersonally I get more use from my 60 mm Macro than the 17 mm but that’s because I enjoy the close up images.
Check that you have the correct setting for stabilisation in movie mode (seperate setting to photo mode). I've used my OM-D E-M10 with a 500mm mirror lens and a 60-300mm and the video footage is silky smooth, at least when having something to brace against or on a beanbag. I just tried it with 2x digital teleconvertion too, At these longer focal lengths the sound of the sensor shifting can become quite noticeable. Keep enjoying your new setup. 😊
Good point. I know for this lens , 100-400mm I have it in lens priority, I have the AEL/ AFL switch set for video , not sure if I corrected the I.S. ... I will have to have a look.
Hiya, I liked your camping videos and I love your wildlife videos too. Very interested how you get on to the OM camera.
Comes out with me what ever I do..
It is so refreshing to find someone with no agenda to push. You do what you because it makes you happy and that is all that matters. I am impressed! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Dan . A 20 minute video and you have me sussed. You a shrink or something 🤔 🤣🤣🤣
OM-5 is a fine camera. M43 is unbeatable IMO for weight/size/image quality.
Yes, indeed . I should have gone this direction in the first place, would have saved all the faf.. Thank you for watching.
👍🌹❤️🌷👌😊
