Exploring an ABANDONED Toyota Corolla E20 (Bellingham, MA)

The official theme song for my channel, “City of Steam”, was originally composed by my friend, Jesse Walsh! Check out the full song here on his TH-cam channel: th-cam.com/video/rrhu7QhAHn8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=G8wLsFCUiEwiMbEW
I was going for a walk along the gorgeous Charles River Trail in Bellingham, Massachusetts when I stumbled upon something unexpected: an abandoned car. Nestled deep in the woods along the hiking trails, this car clearly showed signs of aging and weathering; it was rusty and almost entirely gutted, with several parts missing. I am not a "car guy" by any means, so at first, I was not sure which car this was; after some extensive research, I determined that this spontaneous find of mine was actually an abandoned Toyota Corolla E20, dating back to the early 1970s. More specifically, the E20 series was released between 1970 and 1974, in between the E10 and E30 series. While I could not pinpoint the exact year of this one, I could at least rest assured that this car was well over 50 years old.
One of the joys of traveling and exploring is that you never truly know what you'll find, and this is a perfect example of that. I had gone to the Charles River Trail purely for a beautiful and fulfilling walk, only to randomly stumble upon an abandoned classic car. This was a wicked cool find, and one that had almost no presence online. Thus, I felt compelled to share it, as abandoned cars are always cool to see! For years I passed by this building always hoping someone would do something with it. Sometimes I feel like bringing a can of white paint just to see if others would join in. That milk jug has quite the personality, so much so that no one wants to tear it down. It's also almost across the road from one of the last Drive-In theatres. Maybe you can do a story on that too. You're doing a great job. Thank you🙂

Cool find, you could date it with a VIN number if you can find one. Sometimes there's small metal plaques that have that information etched into them. Ultimately though, it doesn't really matter, just a cool, abandoned vehicle from the 70's. Enjoyed the video!

Many times we would climb up inside the abandoned mills and it was very creepy like all the machines were still there but no people. Found out what the PUCKER FACTOR was for the first time when my kid brother and I (I was 12, he was 10) went to the Boys Club and since it was so cold out we crossed the river to South Lawrence on the ice. Half way across we started to hear the cracking of the ice. We never did that again! LOL. When we fished the river, every other cast we had to clean the paper off our lines. Nice job.

OMG. It would be prudent to get your facts straight before you make a video and comment about things you weren’t even alive to see. I’m pretty sure, considering that LSS was one of the only places of employment for folks who didn’t have a college education, that you would have found many people in town who could have educated you. I can’t speak to what happened before I started working there in 1983, but I sure can tell you about what it was like when I was there. For starters, let’s talk about HOW kids ended up there. One person I worked with, he was in his late 80’s, was dumped off by his own family because they couldn’t afford to feed all of their kids during the war. Another one of my favorite people was the son of a brain surgeon. He was dumped off, NEVER visited again by his family, because his father couldn’t deal with the fact that he had a child with physical and mental challenges. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Now let’s talk about treatment. As I said I worked there in the 80’s through 1990. Most of the residents there were brought there, dropped off and completely erased by their own families. For several of these people, their behavior was dangerous, whether it was self harming or harming others. Their families didn’t want them in their house, so they came to LSS. There were many very high functioning folks who enjoyed working on the farm or wherever. The farm was shut down by the time I went to work there in. There were dances every week and we had other regular entertainment, holiday parties, etc. And guess who made sure that everyone looked amazing for the Christmas Party or helped residents fill out valentines, or helped them dress up for Halloween?? It certainly wasn’t their families. It was the direct care staff. There are two beautiful beaches on the property as well as an amazing handicapped swimming pool in the Training and Development building. Who do you think got everyone ready and made sure they went swimming? Who volunteered their own time on a weekend and took multiple folks for an overnight camp out at the little beach house?? Wasn’t their families. Who, for every Thanksgiving and Christmas would sign up and take one resident home for dinner at their houses?? Wasn’t their families. I’m not saying that it was perfect,by any means, especially during the war, however, I can tell you that you are absolutely wrong about many things that happened there. My suggestion is that next time, do your homework before you make yourself look foolish. And as far as “terrible” goes, it’s pretty shitty that you can criticize something and then turn around and sensationalize it. I hope you find something better to talk about.

There are many people still around the area who worked there or new patients. When LSS closed the patients were housed locally. I'm sure you could have found plenty of locals who could have given you information and been happy to share their stories. In the 80's I worked at a local retail store and many of the patients accompanied by staff would come in to teach the patients life skills. It was always a pleasant experience. My neighbors when I was growing up were residents at the state school and married and had children and were the nicest people ever. Like the person above said some patients were high functioning. I do appreciate your video because I have never seen the inside. Thank you

Always fascinating when I see anything in Baldwinville. Tis my hometown, and it’s pretty outta the way and unknown to anyone but locals to the area.

New drinking game: take a swig every time J-MASS says "pretty cool stuff" 😂 LOL when you said "Tom and I actually did all four of those things off camera" referring to that sign. That was some classic J-MASS comedy right there. Also, nice music accompanying the drone shots. Another 🔥 video!

Good morning from Cape Cod ⛵ I've been to the Corbin reservoir but had no idea this existed. Very cool exploration guys 👍 I'm betting neither one of you are going to quit exploring anytime soon so here's a little information. What you refer to as an A-frame is called the Gable end. The steel in the windows and door frames is added during the construction for strength. Looking at that building I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon. Look out for them spiders 😂✌️🇺🇲

I figured that A-frame was not the correct terminology for that slanted structure, but I could not figure out the correct term while narrating in the moment 😂 thanks so much for clearing that up! Much appreciated!

I remember when that location opened in 1988. You could drive around the back of the bldg and order coffee etc., much like Dunkin's nowadays.

I’ve worked at the eagle creek hydro plant just upriver and at a plant in turner’s falls which is in another old strathmore mill.
