    8:29 that’s me!!!!! Thanks for the video this is such a dope spot. Asbestos and Lead Paint are really only dangerous when you breathe it in. Usually in places like this there is not enough airflow for the asbestos to get in the air

    Part of NHs shameful forgotten past. In theory, a beautiful site for its intended use. Didn’t live up in practice.
    There used to be some documents available on microfiche at the NH state library pertaining to treatment of different groups at the facility and names of building units. Prior to HIPAA I’m sure.

      Yeah, it’s truly a dark moment in history. I wish the histories of many former institutions, like Laconia State School, were not neglected and forgotten like they are today, but learned from.

    OMG. It would be prudent to get your facts straight before you make a video and comment about things you weren’t even alive to see. I’m pretty sure, considering that LSS was one of the only places of employment for folks who didn’t have a college education, that you would have found many people in town who could have educated you. I can’t speak to what happened before I started working there in 1983, but I sure can tell you about what it was like when I was there.
    For starters, let’s talk about HOW kids ended up there. One person I worked with, he was in his late 80’s, was dumped off by his own family because they couldn’t afford to feed all of their kids during the war. Another one of my favorite people was the son of a brain surgeon. He was dumped off, NEVER visited again by his family, because his father couldn’t deal with the fact that he had a child with physical and mental challenges. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Now let’s talk about treatment. As I said I worked there in the 80’s through 1990. Most of the residents there were brought there, dropped off and completely erased by their own families. For several of these people, their behavior was dangerous, whether it was self harming or harming others. Their families didn’t want them in their house, so they came to LSS. There were many very high functioning folks who enjoyed working on the farm or wherever. The farm was shut down by the time I went to work there in. There were dances every week and we had other regular entertainment, holiday parties, etc. And guess who made sure that everyone looked amazing for the Christmas Party or helped residents fill out valentines, or helped them dress up for Halloween?? It certainly wasn’t their families. It was the direct care staff. There are two beautiful beaches on the property as well as an amazing handicapped swimming pool in the Training and Development building. Who do you think got everyone ready and made sure they went swimming? Who volunteered their own time on a weekend and took multiple folks for an overnight camp out at the little beach house?? Wasn’t their families. Who, for every Thanksgiving and Christmas would sign up and take one resident home for dinner at their houses?? Wasn’t their families. I’m not saying that it was perfect,by any means, especially during the war, however, I can tell you that you are absolutely wrong about many things that happened there. My suggestion is that next time, do your homework before you make yourself look foolish. And as far as “terrible” goes, it’s pretty shitty that you can criticize something and then turn around and sensationalize it. I hope you find something better to talk about.

      @debrafraser6880 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      There are many people still around the area who worked there or new patients. When LSS closed the patients were housed locally. I'm sure you could have found plenty of locals who could have given you information and been happy to share their stories. In the 80's I worked at a local retail store and many of the patients accompanied by staff would come in to teach the patients life skills. It was always a pleasant experience. My neighbors when I was growing up were residents at the state school and married and had children and were the nicest people ever. Like the person above said some patients were high functioning. I do appreciate your video because I have never seen the inside. Thank you

I only witnessed kind and good treatment of them. My daughter and I used to bring our faves home for holiday dinners or just an outing. We had a blast!

    The Laconia state school closed in 1991 due to deinstutionalization, caused by a lawsuit put together by parents of inmates here. The group they founded was great bay services and the lawsuit was started after they produced a movie called “help wanted” that showed the real conditions here.(unfortunately, great bay services lost this movie) additionally, parents were never allowed inside this school and this is the only state that developmentally disabled children were considered criminals.

    Back in 2002/2003 I took a graphic design college course and the building for that, for whatever reason, was on this campus instead of the actual college. The google maps coords are 43°33'31.3"N 71°29'41.5"W but this building held both the graphic design/printing press classes and the electrician classes. The buildings right behind it were prison buildings with actual prisoners (who helped me when my car got stuck in a pothole in the winter on that road). Nowadays those classes are held at the actual college and I'm not sure whats going on with the building now. I should go drive by and check.

    Your ignorance is so precious. I live in the Boston area and like your content. So, I'm inclined to not educate you on the horrors that happened in that basement. Just leave that history right where it is. In the past.

      @@j-mass I posted a video of the old Odd Fellows Home in Worcester set over a video of an impromptu cellar jam session (with all the warts since it was just off the cuff). That was a really cool place but they tore it down and built a nursing home in its place.
