เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 23 ธ.ค. 2023
Matt and Gillian bring an abandoned 1970 sailboat back to life! They name their Cheoy Lee Luders 36' boat Lee Hawk. This channel chronicles their journey into sailboat knowledge, sailing experience, and their passion for that feeling of being on the water under sail... a feeling we call 'Offshore Esprit'.
Full tour of our new (to us) 1985 Islander 40 Sailboat. She's in amazing condition! EP | 21
It's Day 1 of our ownership of a 1985 Islander 40. The boat is basically empty, so it's a great time to give you a tour of what she looks like inside and out. We're really excited to have found an old sailboat that has been cared for and maintained so thoroughly by her previous owners. Really looking forward more sailing adventures in this well equipped sloop!

Big Decisions! Should we buy a 2nd boat? Does this mean we have a fleet of old boats? EP | 20

Life throws us some curve balls that makes us wonder if we should buy a 2nd boat, instead of investing more money and time in Lee Hawk. We weigh the opportunity cost of seeing what sailboats are on the market today, and if that might be a better path forward for our sailing aspirations. #sailing #boatupgrades #boatrepairs #sailinglife #sailboat #sailboatrefit #sanpedro #cheoylee #islander

Boat restoration projects don’t have to be hard. A simple update of the boat locker lids with some primer and paint, and a rejuvenation of the teak slats in the cockpit completely change the vibe of our old sailboat. The Total Boat Total Tread has proved to be a solid product, and is super grippy, which is what we wanted. Penofin marine oil is absolutely incredible. It’s super easy to apply and...

After trying over a dozen cleaners, including boat cleaners and household cleaners, we finally found that brought our decks back to life! In this episode, Gillian goes in hard on our awful looking decks and brings them back to looking white (well... mostly white!). Then, we apply Penofin Marine Oil to all the toe rails and our old sailboat starts looking pretty spiffy! #sailing #oldboat #refit ...

The DIY carpenter is back with another project: reclaim a 'catch all' sea berth and make some proper storage cabinets that I can use to store all my tools and supplies on the sailboat. The Hangkai 4-Stroke outboard motor we ordered from Amazon arrived completely broken, so we pivoted and bought a Torqueedo instead. What a great choice! It's a great companion to our inflatable dinghy, it silent, it's light and easy to transport.... We just unlocked summer fun in the marina! #sailboa...

Awsome dude. Next video. Bidet attachment 😅
That things tiny!
You guys good? Missing you
Fantastic work all around. Loved the video, the pacing, the camera work, and I got to enjoy your polishing fix without getting soaked in diesel. Bravo!!
You’re design is flawed, you’re sucking dirty fuel into the pump the way it’s arranged (assuming your tank ever fouled) or you get contaminated fuel , your pump should be sucking fuel from after the racor filter and then you could have the split but realistically since you have another racor down the line you you have the Y valve there one going to engine one returning to tank for polishing only and have one of the elements be 30 or 20 microns and the other one be 2 or 1 micron this way if there’s any contaminants and solids they don’t clog your pump up by having it suck from the tank and not the filters. Also don’t recommend not using marine treated wood in marine applications and lastly if you ever run into heavy seas with those tanks full in that makeshift strap you’ll regret it quick. Get those tanks properly strapped remember diesel is 7lb per gal weight so 30 gal is 280 lbs. Also those fittings will corrode and won’t last more than a few months maybe a year you need to get stainless steel steel valves and use proper fuel rated ptfe tape or it will also eat away over time. Not bad for DIY but many little mistakes that in the long term will bite you in the behind and things that if you’re already doing it once might as well do it right! Btw putting that contaminated diesel in the tank without polishing it first means your tanks will have diesel bug contamination now as you introduced contaminated fuel directly and it doesn’t get all polished out.
Such a pretty boat! Great video. Cheers -Jillian and Brian
Wow!!! I love everything about your new boat!! Congratulations!!
My wife and I had a 1987 Islander 40 and sailed from San Francisco to New England via the Panama Canal in the late 90s. It was an epic adventure. Fantastic boat that had great performance and was very comfortable down below. Lots of sail area and the boat points well. While your sailing others will be motoring. The owner of your boat did an outstanding job maintaining it. The details were exact as ours down to the same cutting board for the sink. The headliner in your boat came stock, but it is amazing it has held up all these years. The zippers in the headliner gave great access to backing plates for deck hardware. The separate shower stall is a must if you are going to do extended crusing and we really appreciated it. You would be hard pressed to find a better value for a 40 foot performance cruiser.
@2502Pilot that headliner was stock?!??!! Incredible!! I want to hear about more of your adventures! What was your Islanders name? ❤
@@SeaGillian My wife and I went down memory lane watching your video. Truly identical to ours. Our boat name was AWOL and it was actually a 1985. The boat had previously sailed to Hawaii and was in Oahu for 9 years before it was shipped to San Francisco where I purchased it in 1996. I sailed it to Oceanside and lived aboard it for 1 year while I was in the Marines. I sailed it back to San Francisco and then my wife and I took off on our trip via the Baha Haha in 1998. Upon completing our trip to New England we shipped the boat to Marina del Rey where a buddy of mine lived aboard it while we raised our newborn son. After a little over a year I sailed it back to San Francisco and eventually sold it in 2003. Last I was aware our boat made it back to the east coast. So many great adventures on the IP40!
😎
🌞
I love your boat! Can’t wait to see you sailing!
Thanks Bonnie!
Congratulations and safe travels to you 🥂
Thank you!
Nice boat. My congratulations. Happy sailing.
Thank you very much!
Amazing boat! So happy for you both!
🥰
Gotta get you out here so you can crew for me!
Just need to get you out here so you can crew for us!
Congratulations..now you need to take a course in navigation, so you can use this boats potential
@robertnorkus5582 I need to take a course in navigation to help my land life as well 😂
Agreed!
I think 1 word sums it up. Your boat is "Baller"!
hahahaha... :)
A rub of lanolin over the fuel tank will help protect that tank and other metals against moisture and salt corrosion without posing a contamination risk . A well designed boat is a boat that is designed to be easly maintained.
great tip!
What a cool vessel, nice find guys!
Thanks SeaDuctress!

Great tour! You two have really scored a winner here! This boat seems in bristol condition or very near it! The previous owners most certainly gave this boat a lot of love. It's none of my business, but I'm thinking you should focus your efforts on this amazing boat by wrapping up the renos on your other boat and selling her - it's just not practical to properly take care of 2 boats (1 is hard enough!)
@andyl8025 oh we know. They also just announced they’ll be closing the bridge between marinas making Lee Hawk a real destination versus a skip away. Definitely want to wrap Lee Hawk before we pass her on. Not ready just yet! And in all honesty, I’m just too emotionally attached to SVLH… had to say goodbye to my dad, my dog, a friend, and my health this year…just not ready to say goodbye to Lee Hawk yet. I know she’ll be a great boat for another sailor and it’s best to give her the best sea life again, but I haven’t let go that she’s not the boat I can handle anymore. Hopefully soon- we’ll continue the final love tasks we want to finish and then we will part with her. With first dibs to this channel, of course! ❤
You aren't wrong... and what @seagillian said...
Nice old boat. Simple, clean, and looks to have been very well cared for.
❤❤❤
Absolutely
Really nice boat, hard to believe it was built in 85. The designers came up with allot of really innovative ideas. I’ll be really interested to see some trips around the islands offshore San Diego, like Catalina. I was visiting LA back in about 93 when I was about 16, but never made it to San Diego, but from what I’ve seen, it looks like a very similar lifestyle to what we have here on the Gold Coast in Australia, but I’d venture to say you have allot better Mexican food 😉
@robertjfsoper we cannot wait to do those Catalina trips!! Never been to Australia. It’s on our bucket list! We’ll bring the tacos 🌮
@@SeaGillian if you make it this far, you’ll have to come over for a BBQ 👍
Thanks for sending good vibes from the Gold Coast!
Wow, that’s a beautiful boat! Can’t wait to come visit this Spring and check it out 😊
YESSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🎉
Whenever you're ready!
Previous owners gave that boat a lot of love. Rare find and congratulations!
Thank you!! We hunted long and hard. And so fortunate the last owners were amazing during their time with the boat and the handoff!
We agree!
The color of the island Packet is purpose built to be easy on the eyes in the sunny days. White decks burn out your vision and you need eye protection all the time..
Pretty sure they are offering other non-white color options now, but I see your point.
Congrats on the new boat! The name is perfect.
🥹
Thanks bro.
Congratulations, I am a big proponent of getting out and sailing. So many buy these fixer uppers and never see the ocean. The Islander 40 is a solid boat and appears to have been kept up. My boat neighbor has sailed his I36 back and forth to Hawaii 3 times and again is preparing for another summer passage.
Wow - back and forth to Hawaii 3 times... That's inspiration.
😍 Pacific Crossing Dreamin’ over here! 😍
Greetings from the Gold Coast, Australia, congrats guys, you’ve done the right thing, you only live once!
💯💯💯💯💯💯
You got that right!
I have sailed on an Islander 40, excellent choice, well designed and solid build. The more amenities, comfort, ease of use and upgrades on a boat the better. Perhaps having the main halyard lead aft would be good, keep you off the deck completely. I liked the boat instantly when I saw the 1 can of Coors beer in the fridge. Love the name and congratulations. Best wishes for Gillians recovery.
Yep, I've been thinking that running the main halyward aft makes sense too. Thanks for the well wishes!
Thank you 🥹 - and one day we’ll crack that Coors open for you! 😂
Nicely done😁. More logic than emotion in the decision for a ready-to-go boat, looks like you’re ready for adventure. The chronic illness thing is a long game sort of thing IMO, very important to play the short game wisely as you have ❤️
Thanks for the kind words Robert.
💯❤
Congrats. She is a beaut! I made the HOF!!

Hi guys congratulations on your new yacht , Enjoy yourselves. Adventure before dementia. Keep up the good work. Enjoy the videos Cliff from Australia
Adventure before Dementia! Love that!
@bishopkinlyside8477 Matt’s new reply to everything is “adventure before dementia!” 😂
You can never have enough boats!been working on my boat for three years, when weather and time allow… my son has said for awhile, we should just buy a boat to sail while we finish this one.. best wishes! Like your new boat
I like how your son thinks!
Love likeminded sailors!
I suspect having a 9-5 job is the only thing keeping me me from having the time to try and 'adopt' more old boats that need some love...
Well done 😂 🧙🏼♂️🇬🇧 Having had and gone through cancer surgery then got Epstine Barr virus, Glandular fever so i know how it feels ... Long covid before covid which i also had the joy of.. so yup its slow. Theres a genius young British rap artist REN ..who ended up in all sorts of problems till they realised he had an immune response disease. Probably triggered by lymes disease from a deer tick bite as a child.
Love that REN story. He's an incredible talent. And congrats on beating back the big C! Long term illnesses can be real buzz kill, but Gillian is super resilient and we're looking forward to future adventures.
Ugh @clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 sorry you’ve gone through the wringer as well! Really makes us shine the bright light on the things we aren’t held back from. To many more ⛵️adventures, we hope!
Matt and Gillian, Congratulations on Kona Blue! When I first subscribe to your channel about a year ago, I told you that you were about six months ahead of me in the boat ownership program. I found it interesting how your top three boxes are the exact same as mine after spending only one summer aboard my sailboat I want a roller furling Jib, self tailing winches, and an auto pilot. I have two questions before next weeks vote tour episode First, what’s with the single can of Coors light in the refrigerator? And two what’s the definition of “Baller”?
😂 omg that single can of Coors! I can hear the last owners getting a chuckle if they see this- they cleaned out the boat wonderfully, so I’m sure that gift was intentional 😂 we may have to make that can our version of Captain Q’s Dinty Moore!
Glad to hear that we're thinking along the same lines. We've laughed about that solitary beer can too... Don't know why it's there, but it was cold and frosty, so maybe it was just to demonstrate the excellent state of the fridge. LOL. As for baller: ball·er - /ˈbôlər/ - adjective informal•US - extremely good or impressive; excellent. "this place is baller!"
@@SeaGillian I was thinking the same thing. That Coors Light is OE's Dinty Moore!
@@OffshoreEsprit I figured it meant "good or great" since your Boat #2 is so very nice. When I looked it up in the Urban Dictionary, this is what I found, "Originally referred to as Ball Players that made it out of the streets to earn millions playing professional ball". I'm really excited for you two and to see the new Kona Blue next week. It'll also be fun to see another romantic take on Lee Hawk. I think my favorite upgrade was the Gold Flaked Turned Stern Sign
@@michaelstephan1289 so much love in that boat placard ❤
Yup know what you mean about the medical thing, my wife just finished her last treatment for cancer (radiation/chemo) prognoses is excellent. But she also has a couple other issues so right now I am in the middle of setting my boat up for single handling from the cockpit. No worries just don’t give up 😎
Hey Rob ~ Glad to hear that your wife is on the mend and is beating back the big C! Even if the path forward may be windy and twisty, doesn't mean we can't still still keep moving forward, we just have to be a bit more clever and determined. Keep up the fight! Sending good vibes your way.
Sending warm winds Mrs. Rob’s way! ❤ and much love to our men who single hand the waves while we battle our own fights
