So it's HURT POSEIDON! Well, at least we have that cleared. I love how this song is a literal song foreshadowing everything that happens in the Thunder, Vengence, and Ithaca Sagas. It's so clever
“I see a world where I help you get home… but that’s not a world I know…” Tiresias straight up said “yo I know you need advice but I’ve got an NDA with the fates, so imma be cryptic as hell, good luck”
I've always took that line as Tiresias seeing the "Canon" Odyssey. And seeing that being straightforward didn't work then he decided to be as cryptic as shit for this one. 🤣
IM SO PROUD THAT I FINALLY NOTICED ONE OF THESE BEFORE HE RELEASED THE VIDEO!!! I love all of his Easter Eggs! Our Captain puts so much thought in for us! I love it!
Despite how dramatic and epic that scene with Tiresias was, I’d like to image five minutes prior he was binging EPIC like a show and was like, “Dang dude. That’s crazy”
I like to think that Tiresias in the first chorus sees everything that already happened, which is why all lines in the chorus can line up with something in act 1, and that the second verse is all act 2.
Yeah, I see it as: Past Romance- Just a Man (talking about his family) Sacrifice- Just a Man (kills the infant) Betrayal- Keep your Friends Close Final Stand- Polyphemus (Polites) Brink of Death- Ruthlessness Final Breath- Ruthlessness (kinda a stretch, but using the last of the wind) No longer you- Tiresias is currently talking to him in the Underworld, so he thinks Odysseus is dead?
@@InfernalBananacould also match the high point There are other ways or you know entering the underworld for draw your final breath and no longer you for the absolute present in what's happening to him as he learns this and the "rawr rawr rawr" it causes in a few minutes.
3:18 i also like how the idea of that was further pushed before that point just when the prophet says “i see your wife, with a man who is haunting, a man, with a trail, of bodies” and he responds with “WHO?!” I feel like odysseus is just sitting there with Penelope and thinks about the prophet randomly and just thinks “welp- i know who now”
Technically, hurt Posiedon was the only one we didn't know, and I'm so glad we finally have an answer to that. The other easter eggs were so fun to catch during Odysseus.
My favorite bit of No Longer You is when Tiresias says "I see your wife with a man who is haunting, a man with a trail of bodies", clearly referring to Ody, and Odysseus says "WHO?!", his first thought being that Penelope got with another man.
The amount of details like this throughout the musical… I’ve seen so very few songwriters put as much effort and heart into their projects as much as Jay has with Epic. Not just with this song in particular, but ALL the songs have so many little moments and subtle details that add so much to the story. I’m so proud of what he’s accomplished, Epic The Musical truly is a masterpiece
Bro, No Longer You is one of my favourite songs, I loved figuring out what the prophet saw especially after hearing the Ithaca saga, everything came together🤩🙏
Jorge is a literal genius and no one can convince me otherwise! Like my jaw actually DROPPED when at the end when he was talking abt the Oooooodyyyy-seeeeeeusss at the end of No Longer You foreshadowing Odysseus-like seriously this is insane!!!!
“Odysseus is a monster now! :D” in all seriousness this is one of my favorite songs from the musical. if you ever unpacked Scylla I’d be forever in your debt Mr jalapeño (hope u feel better btw)
I've always liked to think that with "I see a world where I help you get home," Tiresias sees that if he were to help Odysseus and let him reach Ithaca sooner, Odysseus would not be prepared to deal with all the suitors and would die fighting to reclaim his home. It was only by withholding further assistance that Odysseus would learn what he needed to succeed
My thought was: "I see the song of past romance" calling back to old times because prophet sees past and the future, secondly "I see the sacrifice of men" in my head this was reffering to polites because he should've been saved oddy from the cyclops first hit ect. , "portrayals of betrayal" is opening of wind bag, "brothers final stand" is mutiny, "brink of death" is pulling me to the opening of love in paradise because calypso said "I swore that you were dead", and finally and only right one is "final breath" as get in the water ending. Thank you for answering these questions which is left unknown 👍🏻
Every time Jorge talks about any part of EPIC themusical it makes me want to just go through and listen to he whole thing again. This musical is so gorgeous and well produced, I wish I had been here from the very beginning because holy crap so much work went into it.
Oh my word--OF COURSE Ody-seus was also the background vocals at the end of No Longer You. HOW DID I NOT REALIZE THAT. Thank you for giving us all the easter eggs, Jorge!
Thanks for the insights, love that one can pick up all of these details when listening to this. Also, I dunno if it was intentional or not, but in Song 38... The end part of the ominous chorus between the verses also sounds like "Ody... Seus... Old King, SPARE US!!!" Would love to know if that's the case or not, but either way, loved this musical so much, thanks to you and all of the artists, hope to see it on stage someday!
I also looove the part where Tiresias sings "I see your wife with a man that is haunting, a man with a trail of bodies" and Odysseus not realizing it's him asks "who?!" 😭 Thank you for breaking these down!
2:46 I thought that Jorge was going to mention Athena in ICHBW, when she sang "I cant help but wonder what this world could be, if we all held each other with a bit more empathy..."
This man is so smart. No other musical or even music writer I know puts THIS amount of thought into their music. The level of work this man puts into Epic is truly amazing, we love you, Jorge❤❤
This man is so creative that none of us can comprehend it. I honestly want to be able to understand Jorge's mind. The way he thinks and creates is so complex, and it is admirable and amazing. I'm glad I at least get to enjoy what he does. Thank you for everything, Jorge!
I'm so proud of myself getting the Easter eggs and putting two and two together while listening to this Musical that is a true Masterpiece! Well done Mr Jalapeno! Well done
I absolutely love listening to you break down the songs, and pointing out different things that might be missed when listening to them. I hope you do more, it makes me so happy seeing you get excited about how they turned out.
Can we also not forget the amazing detail in 600 strike, when the "No Longer You" piano melody plays when he "hurts Poseidon", exactly what they said in No Longer you?😮
Oh my gosh this is so cool!!!! I would also love to see like the same break down for the Odysseus song where there’s like that beautiful choir and they are all singing Odysseus ❤️❤️❤️
In Would You Fall In Love With Me, Penelope sings a little riff near the end on the word “for” (waiting for you). It sounds really similar to the “whoa oh oh”s that we often get from the crew. I’ve been trying to figure out if I’m looking too far into that
Oh cool! The second chorus wasn’t a mystery to me because some awesome comment on a different video figured out the words, with the one being off is they thought it was “run! poseidon!” and now it’s “hurt poseidon!” Everything else was spot on, that commentator is impressive. This just confirms it. Thanks for breaking down NLY, I love love love this song~
"A Fighting game for EPIC" You have just delivered the most amazing musical of all time, and now you're thinking of a game adaptation? Our Captain works to make miracles happen!
NO LONGER YOU IS MY FAVORITE SONG!!! Thanks for giving an in depth explanation of all the lyrics ❤️ every song in epic has such well thought out lyrics and meanings 😭
When he says "There is a world where I help you get home, but that's not a world I know", I interpret that as Tiresias saying, "I'd like to help you, but I know that won't end well." So he basically sees a future where he "helps", but Odysseus becomes a monster, so he thinks if he warns Odysseus of all the awful stuff that happens, it will at least steer him away from becoming a monster. But in an ironic twist, by telling Odysseus that only a monster can make it home, he pushes Odysseus to embrace the monster, inadvertently "helping" and creating the exact future he predicted.
The odysseus chants or something in song 38 actually sound awfully alot like Poly-phe-mus, i think it's because like he called almost all of the suitors just like how the cyclops killed most of his crew, with NO mercy at all! I think that's a nice touch
Hey, love your music so much and I play the piano but finding sheet music can be tough. Are you planning on releasing any sheet music? Or anyone that knows where I can find sheet music for the challenge that would be great
AMAZING! Glad to know all the hidden chants now lol. When I first played this for my mom, this was her favourite and STILL remains her favourite even after. Thanks Jorge for this!! :D 💙

I see your wife with a man who is haunting A man with a trail of bodies", HES SEEING ODY!!! "Palace covered in red" is after song 38, "faces of men who had long beloved you're dead" are the suitors, and "I see your wife with a man who is haunting, a man with a trail of bodies" IS LITERALLY JUST ODY. (yes I understand that I might be late to this understanding my fellow winions)
Glad to hear a breakdown of my favorite song of the musical. It all lines up with what I thought, but confirmation is good. I've always loved prophecies that rely on wordplay, and Tiresias in his many iterations always delivers. His portrayal in O Brother Where Art Thou as a trolleycar driver is a particularly fun one.
I heard “Siren Song, Scylla Cost, Mutiny, Lightning Bolt, Fight Poiseison, Kill All The Suitors For Love.” Close but not exactly, the point got across though. It was captivating.
This is REALY cool how much foreshadowing is in “No longer you” it makes me wonder how many other cool details are in the rest of the musical, side note I was wondering what the background vocals are saying in “God games” when Zeus it announcing the gods names at the beginning?
I love hearing that my guesses about the O-dy-se-us chants in the danger theme were right!! Also the choral chants in No Longer You during the _“I see your palace...”_ part are my favorite to attempt to sing along too lol
While listening to the Ithaca saga I always imagine Odysseus getting a solo moment before singing "Penelope" at the start of song 40 that is him realizing that he is not the man he ended act one as, singing to the tune of No Longer You. Here's how I imagine it: "I sung a song of past romance I sacrificed six of my men I betrayed them and was betrayed The men took their final stand I was on the brink of death I then took my final breath But I have finally made it home alive [Caesura because I imagine this as a capella] But, am I really me?
