Hey, I'm Josh. To put things simply, I like mountains...
Hiking, mountaineering, and just general outdoor exploration - adventure - this is my passion that I know I share with many.
Through my own journey, my own exploration, I wish to share everything that I learn upon the way. Either through documenting my trips, or providing valuable insights regarding various topics relating to the outdoors.
I hope my adventures can inspire you, and my information can aid you in your own. I'd love for you to join me on my pursuit to try and make a valuable contribution to the hiking and outdoor community.

Hiking 60km To A Remote High Country Peak - Mount Fainter South (1883m)
Join me on an extended overnight hike to Mount Fainter South, an often overlooked peak in Victoria's High Country!
Mount Fainter South is the fifth highest standalone peak in Victoria at 1883m. It can be reached via a number of routes, but I decided to take a longer excursion that includes a variety of trails across Mount Feathertop and the Bogong High Plains.
In combination with my previous 3 day walk around Mount Bogong, I have comprehensively covered all trails within the region. You can check out my Mt Bogong trip here: th-cam.com/video/FamEp9i7G7Y/w-d-xo.html

People Are Trashing The Outdoors… Is It Social Media’s Fault?
มุมมอง 3Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Outdoor recreation has never been more popular than right now. More people than ever are out an exploring National Parks and wilderness areas around the globe... why wouldn't this be a good thing? Take a look around. Our natural places can't handle the overcrowding - hoards funneled into fragile areas through viral social media posts. It's a topic that has received attention in the past, but no...
Solo Hiking 55km Through The Victorian Alps - Mount Bogong
มุมมอง 2K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Come along with me as I solo hike a 55km multi-day loop around the mighty Mount Bogong, Victoria’s highest mountain (1986m). Mount Bogong stands proud above the rolling hills of the Victorian Alps, separated from the Bogong High Plains by the Big River - giving the mountain a prominence of over 1000m. All paths to the summit are steep and involve long ascents: this hike effectively climbs Mount...
Gear Addiction Is Killing The Outdoors (It's Complicated)
มุมมอง 91K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Is recreational hiking even about actually hiking anymore? Or is it a glorified fashion trend? "Gearification" - the addiction to equipment and clothing - has become far too rampant in the outdoor community. It seems we are all shopping and watching gear reviews rather than hiking. But this is a symptom of a larger problem... We all can't keep ours eyes off of gear and new shiny things, so much...

The Grampians Peaks Trail is a 160km thru-hike that follows the main ridge and various peaks of the Grampians mountain range in western Victoria. The range is characterized by its sharp, uplifted sandstone cliffs, varying rock formations and diverse vegetation. The hike is generally considered to have 3 sections: a southern, central and northern section - each section being roughly 50 kilometer...

Well said Josh and well over-due. Cluso
Dear Josh. I have recently watched some of your videos re Bogong High Plains - Feathertop, Bogong, Dibbins Hut, and all in between. Very real vids and well described. I have walked this area over the last 9 years and most recently, (two weeks ago), from Harrietville, over Feathertop then Tawonga, Pretty Valley, Ropers, Tim's spur, Quartz , Bogong and down Staircase. Spectacular and enormous for me - I am 68!!! Good luck with your future trips. You seem like someone who has a fine appreciation of such. Cluso
Fantastic effort. I wanted to do the route you’ve described but without the means to be picked up at the other end I had to split it into 2 trips.
Looks like a big hike. Great views.
Great points.
If there’s any beginners here wondering how much it actually costs to get into backpacking. Best case scenario with you is to go in the summer. everything is cheaper when the weather is good, 3-season tent, pad, and bag will cost you probably 550$ on medium quality stuff. And for a pack and water filtration and cook gear and food another 300$, plus a safe 150$ for odds and ends. This is realistic.
My method with gear is pretty simple. 1. Make sure I have everything I need to be safe….yes that can cost thousands of dollars, especially in the winter for backpacking. 2. I only add something to the list to buy if I find myself going, man I wish I had this it would rly be nice to improve my experience WHILE IN THE BACKCOUNTRY.
As a person that actually hikes this idea is just absurd. Go out on the trails and most people are just out in hoodies and jeans. Very few people actually have gear. I see more shell jackets in the streets of nyc that out on the trails. I actually worry about people’s lack of gear. I have see too many people starting long hikes way too late in the day without additional layers or head lamps or adequate amounts of water.
There is a vast difference between not having anything and compulsively buying things you don’t need. I mentioned within the video that you need the essentials, and nowhere did I suggest that you need to be under prepared…
Buy used !
Well also keep in mind people who actual go backpacking and what not are watching those videos. As someone who trail runs 10-20 miles a run you need some gear. Like a running vest to carry batteries or snacks and water. Sure I can get a cheap vest on amazon but they cause chaffing, will tear in probably my 3rd run, unnecessary bulk and weight. And yes I do feel the weight after about the 3 mile mark. This dude just sounds like someone who just goes on a mile hike and judges people with gear. You don't know how far they are going or where their going. Let them enjoy it in their own way. Dude just gatekeeping outdoors, it's pretty sad.

Hear hear! When influencers, companies and organizations claim their aim is to “help more people get outdoors” it makes me cringe. It’s a neat intention, and I get that it’s an easy one to get behind and to make what they do feel meaningful (for themselves).. but is it necessarily that good in reality, for nature?
Agree that the barrier shouldn’t be money, it’s about making opportunity fair - but the barrier of knowledge and experience should be there. Always. If you’re really keen on learning and pursuing this interest and money isn’t a barrier, than anyone can earn their possibility to get out. But you gotta earn it first. When did we as a society start viewing equality as “no one should have to try”?
As societies around the world adopt the modern approach of ‘making everything as easy as possible’ (entertainment in all forms, cooking (or lack thereof), delivery etc), it is no wonder that the average person expects everything to be comfortable. Pure outdoor exploration is not a comfortable experience, and most people when given the opportunity to erase that lack of comfort, will.
@@betterhiking spot on, sadly
I haven't been hiking or doing outdoors stuff for several years. Yesterday I was going to join a public biking group... everyone was absolutely decked out in high-end modern biking gear for a casual ride. It was so weird.
Couldn't agree more. As a seasoned hiker I have fallen prey to this a few times.
Sad, but thanks for reminding people to just enjoy the outdoors anyway, anyhow, anytime time!
Hey Josh, you Seem like a man who really knows a lot about mountaineering and know how to achieve your goals/dreams. I was wondering if you have a 1 year training program for a beginner, like a dierect plan for each day to get the most out of the training or how to i get a training program like this😊
Hey Nick, Thanks for your estimation of me! I know a reasonable amount of training for mountaineering along with the fundamentals as I am a student of mountaineering myself. I offer a coaching service where we can go over what you need to know about training for your goals and how you’d train over a years time. You can book a call through the link below, I think it would answer a lot of your questions. betterhiking.com.au/coaching
@ thanks for the respond, i will definitely get a call with you when im gonna start my training. I hope to start already at summer time with my training.
Look forward to hearing from you 💪
Fitting Boots and a decent Backpack is all you😮 should spend some money on. Always think about multi use.
It doesn’t matter so much as to what you spend money on, more so the reasons why you choose to do it. Is it real, proven need, or driven by consumerism? But yes your 2 suggestions are the most important items to get right.
when I see the goretex logo my first thought is: "it's overpriced"
Finally, someone pointed it out! Cheers for that. 👍
I appreciate the effort you put into making this.
Namaste 🙏
What area in the vic alps would you recommend to best avoid the heat during summer?
Unfortunately you can’t really, but the least severe area would probably be the Bogong High Plains. Otherwise Kosciuszko is a better alternative as it’s slightly higher up with an abundance of water.
If anyone is reading this you don’t need anything. My first camping trip was the most fun I ever had. all I had for gear. was a fire, a bedsheet, a crappy blue tarp and a multitool in a small backpack We camped in the wintertime so when the morning came there was snow on my makeshift sleeping bag but I slept like a baby just cowboy camping next to that fire. My friend just brought a handful of blankets and a pillow like he was living room camping😂
I need it all. it makes me feel good and cozy wearing beautiful technical gear. i dont even hike that much
This is interesting. Thank you!! I am in no way a hiker or mountaineer and I've never considered that the trek to Everest Base Camp might be a worthy journey in of itself. I'm 63.. who knows.. if I start now I could be in good enough shape for the challenge on my 65th.
If you’re in good health your age won’t prevent you from trying the EBC trek. There’s plenty of infrastructure in the region due to its popularity and not a lot can go wrong now. If you set your sights on it I think you could make it happen.
@@betterhiking Very cool. Thanks for your encouragement. :)
A lady from Germany recently got killed on a trail by yaks because she was standing on the edge. And they knocked her off with their horn off the cliff. Not purposely, but it happened. So very good tip. @ 11:03
Great stuff. I like the sound of your breakfast.
I've been q sponsored snowboarder, but I've also hiked shale ledges in jeans and stolen bowling shoes lol😂
I'm with you on the tent, great stuff.
Love it !!
Wow good advice bro. I'm planning for EBC in 2025
I travel all around the country hiking and backpacking and i take the same thing every time. Just a small backpack, water, food, and my phone. Thats it. I dont buy any "gear".
Same happened with the gym - gymfluencers, clothing brands, latest trends. Very pathetic and cringe.
Kit should be easier to repair
But empty, without forest and rivers....Bullshit mountain
Guilty…💁
Very good video. Over the last 50 years we've seen the Pacific Crest Trail go from an occasional hardcore canvas carrying hiker to a thousand ultralight hikers per season. The good thing is that hikers police each other through LNT principles. More hikers means more resources are directed to dedicate lands to protection from development and mining interests. A generation is growing up with appreciation for wild places. Of course the ironical result is that once wild places are now suffering from overuse by humans. No easy answers here.
Great video. Thanks for sharing some positive motivation.
I hate that this is what 'outdoor culture' has come to be defined by. It goes exactly against what the spirit of the outdoors should be. The outdoors is about what nature gives us, naturally... DUH! So why are we obsessing over the next new modern technological gadgets and gizmos ever other week? For all of human history, until maybe the last few hundred years, everybody lived outside/much more interconnected with nature, pretty much with just what nature gave them. And thank you for acknowledging the environmental impacts of consumerism with outdoor gear. If you love the outdoors, you should act like it.
Me need stick and good shoes
As someone who is just getting into hiking and adventuring, this video feels really important… I wanted to get into hiking to get away from the world, consumerism, etc. A few weeks of research to try and get the “best” and I noticed… I just need to get on with it. I want adventure, not a new piece of gear.
You da man! Question, do you carry USD? Or Ruppee? For Helicopter evac.
Your travel insurance should cover helicopter evacs, so no need to carry extra. Just be aware of the helicopter scams in Nepal. You can search it up to learn about it.

absolute whack video and the comments are BEYOND whack. you are the TMZ of backpacking.
Great topic, you don't have to spend a lot to have a great time outdoors. Same exact thing going on in the off-road community with the so called "overlanders"
amen

I always cackle a bit when people find out that I like camping/backpacking and say something like "That's great! It must be so cheap!" Nooooooo, it's really really not.
TH-cam content is no longer about being entertaining the business has shifted and TH-cam is seen more so as a product to be sold
This video is a big ol' truth punch and I love it.
Spot on commentary about the consumerism crisis. Wish more people looked at the outdoors like this.
