THAT’S IT! WE HAVE FINALLY FINISHED IT!
After 3 years of digging holes in the dead of night surrounded by magical mountain beasts, we set out on a mission to create the most thoughtful compost toilet design the world had ever seen, a design that lives in harmony with nature, saves us 75,000 litres of water each year, and creates valuable compost for our trees. It’s taken us 8 solid months, and in this time we’ve pushed ourselves to the limit of sanity (genuinely a little over the limit for Robbie), we’ve had some heated debates, some great challenges, and some magical moments too. Anyway get comfortable, sit back and enjoy the finale!

Great fun watching you guys build/renovate/discover your way around your home. Hint for next time you tile! I'm not a Tiler but have done heaps of DIY, tiling. When you get to Grouting your tiles, use the trowel (rubber ones are best for grout) to push the grout between the tiles. Spread it from one tile to the next and smooth off as much of the grout from the face of the tiles as you can. You actually need very little grout, but it will depend on your gaps between tiles. Leave as little grout as possible on the face of the tiles. Follow up immediately with a damp sponge. wiping over the tiles, not along the tile gaps or you will pull the grout out from between the tiles, go across the tiles and if you need to go along the tile gaps, do it very lightly. Have a bucket of water and continually wringing out the sponge to remove the excess grout and then go over and over the tiles until they are clean of grout. Now come back the next day as there will still be a thin film of grout left on the tiles when it dries. You can now simply do a quick wipe over with the clean damp sponge, and your tiles will look amazing. Yes, it should have taken about 1 hour. BTW, looks great.

I'm s bit behind on viewing data tech problems, 🎉🎉🎉 I am impressed! I've done more kitchen and bath projects than I can remember, literally! That is top notch! Very nice and clean finish work! I know what that takes and the stone works? Gorgeous! 🎉🎉super nice! You have a lot to be proud of there, my 6 year old daughter watched this and she was quite taken to see other people do what dad does too, Sage is growing so fast, most people don't believe me that outhouses can be done nice, clean and sanitary. I have work mates that are going to do a sink like yours, I'll pass it along so they can see your work, stunning product. Functional, classy and beautiful. Again well done.😊😊😊

Beautiful people! Amazing job on the compost toilet! Robbie shows the skills, strength, and determination to be a great homesteader. I've been homesteading for 25 years so I know how challenging it is, particularly in the beginning. Sage is just 2 years old and he can hammer, dig with a pick axe, and use handsaws. He's so strong! You two should start a school called, "School for the Proper Development of a Human Being". One thing you do that I think is very important is that you don't baby talk Sage. You speak to him as you would to adults, which I believe imparts respect, and accelerates his learning. Keep up the good work!

I have finished the last of the 'Compost Toilet Saga'. Excellently made and entertaining. I really got into the climbing during Paris and think you should build a rock wall on site. As for trying to make a place like your friends, just focus on small areas like you have with the bog. All the plants on top are all the succulents I love so much. Looks amazing. Your land will be an oasis soon with ALL the water recycled. Bravo! Permaculture! A great way of hassle free gardening that preserves all the fungal connections and attracts all the right insects.

Wow thanks so much for watching them all, it really helps our channel when everytime you watch a video so thank you Richard! It's so nice to hear you enjoyed them all as well, we're never sure if people like watching older episodes. Yes we need to just do each project the best we can then one day maybe it will all come together into something beautiful like our friends house... although living on a farm i'm not sure our house will ever look like his haha, we always need to be able to get a dirty old tractor or a wheel barrow full of horse manure through! And yes to fungi! This year has been really cool, after 30 years of this land being sprayed with pestcides and herbicides we've had a mini explosion of new plants popping up, mushrooms everywhere, about a billion little snails, lots and lots of frogs, it's so nice to see the animals coming back! 🧡

    • @darthbuzz1
      @darthbuzz1 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@ladyandtheowlman I stole this from Wikipedia:- 'Permaculture is an approach to land management and settlement design that adopts arrangements observed in flourishing natural ecosystems. It includes a set of design principles derived using whole-systems thinking. It applies these principles in fields such as regenerative agriculture, town planning, rewilding, and community resilience'. Basically you never plough. Ploughing breaks the micro chains of underground fertilising fungi. You plant crops and around, plants that attract insects that eat insects that attack the food plants. And just let it all grow together... let the ecosystems evolve. Just an idea. Wikipedia and YT knows much more about it than I do but I thought you might like to read about it. Take care :)

And also, never tried them my self and not sure of the availability, but 'Heirloom seeds', from things like tomatoes, are seeds from the past before pesticides and sellective breeding for longevity, fast growing, toughness, etc. became a thing. Apparently these taste 10x better.

That's interesting to read! We're definitely trying a few of these and always trying to improve our permaculture techniques! We've found it quite hard to adopt a lot of the techniques here because there is such little rainfall, or when it does fall it all falls in 48 hours then disappears! And so we have been following Geoff Lawtons re-wilding the desert videos on youtube to try and find dry climate permaculture techniques that could work better for us! All the farmers here cultivate their land (like ploughing) and they swear their trees grow 10x faster... so we're trying to prove them wrong by growing lots of deep rooted grasses! 🧡

    Asturias?

We live in the mountains between Alicante and Valencia, 760m above sea level. People often think we live in Asturias, is our area similar?

grout needs to be a little drier when applied. You can also get grout for larger gaps. "lecheo para junta gorda" Just mix small amounts and do a few tiles at a time depending on thetemp.

Thank you Tief! We'll definitely look into using that special grout for larger gaps next time thanks for recommending! And will only try a few tiles at a time next time, and will look for some esparto for cleaning. We've done quite a few tiling jobs and have watched so many youtube videos on how to do it, but it never seems to work out very well for us haha! It's an advanced skill no? 🧡

Really enjoying your videos. Working my way through in a couple of days. You are using concrete like it is going out of fashion, in small amounts I know.

Thank you Richard for writing us a kind comment and supporting our family! It's great to have you on this journey with us! Looks like you're very into the environment, which is of course brilliant! Yes we've been using concrete for many of our projects, and you're right, we're not super comfortable with the environmental aspect of how it is made, however wood is the usual alternative to building here, and we have big problem with termites, so you need to treat the wood heavily with toxic chemicals which felt potentially worse! And also wood doesn't last forever, whereas concrete has potential to last a long time and begin to outweigh its negative initial impact. We're definitely keen to explore natural building materials like cob in future, it will be a whole new learning curve for sure! 🧡

@@ladyandtheowlman Wow, thanks for replying, and in such detail. I totally understand, you are building things to last many lifetimes, and you certainly build things to last... over engeneering things so they last for centuries. By the way, you are both very beautiful people both inside and out with an impossibly even more beautiful son who you are doing an amazing job with. Like many say, never seen a happier baby. And you live in a ... yes... beautiful part of the world. You are VERY VERY lucky and you will just go from strength to strength. Privalidged to join your ride. P.S. Next step vegan? ;)

Thank you for saying all of that Richard, such kind words, and makes us feel grateful for where have ended up in our lives! It's so nice to hear we're doing a good job with Sage too, we are certainly learning a lot being parents for the first time! We did spend quite a bit of time vegetarian/ vegan, and maybe we will go back to this again, building my strength before having Sage it felt right to eat some organic eggs and meat, and now we are experimenting with lots of different foods, so so many greens from the garden, and as much organic as possible! 🧡

Lovely job on the clean up outside. In future when grouting, always, always, do a small ish section and clean the tile before it dries, then move on. My first time grouting I made the same mistake, never again. Best of luck with everything and keep going.
