2 YEARS ALONE OFF-GRID | Everything we built [TIMELAPSE]

- We left our city lives behind and moved to the top of a mountain in Spain, to live off-grid. We’ve spent 2 years alone, renovating an ancient stone house and restoring the land.
Our first goal was to create a liveable space, and then to develop a vegetable garden in order to grow our own fruit and vegetables, and begin the journey to self-sufficiency.
Since we moved here we’ve experienced some of the hottest summers on record, wildfires, floods, goats eating all of our trees, wild boar eating our vegetables and eagles eating our chickens. On top of all this we’ve been learning how to build a house for the first time on our own, in a language we have no experience in.
We believe very much in our vision, and will continue to overcome these challenges, and find peace and happiness on this magical mountain.

One of my favorite things is off grid living. A slower pace of life. No racing off to some city job trading you time away for someone else. One of the most beautiful things to me is seeing a couple working together hand in hand. Is amazing seeing what you have build with your hard work and determination. You will always get to look back and know, is was your grit and determination that built what you have. That's awesome! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for your sweet comment! It is certainly a big difference to the first part of our lives - living in the middle of London. But it definitely feels like a natural way to live, like humans have been doing for thousands of years before this… living from the land, being in nature! Building a house has been about 100x harder than we expected but we now have so much appreciation for all the little design details we built in and when something breaks we know how to fix it! It will probably take the rest of our lives to finish renovating this old shepherds house to the point it lives up to the beautiful mountain surrounding it! Wouldn’t say it is super easy to build a house with your partner, we’ve certainly learnt a lot about each other along the way haha!

I'm an old octagenarian living in Oz, and your adventure reminds me of one my wife and I embarked upon many years ago, sick of suburbia, and transformed a 20 acre parcel of rural land into an sustainable home where we raised our family devoid of suburbia frustrations. Great vlog. This was us about 15 years ago here in NZ, raising our 2 girls on our special piece of land, planting, shooting wild pigs and possum. It is so worth it and I would do it all again. Hard days that seem never ending, cleaning up after floods and storm damage, but sitting out having a coffee in the morning looking down the valley is so worth it.

Haha thanks Neil! Yes those are some real highlights for us too! Nice to be reminded of them, it feels like so long ago now and so much has changed! You forget how carefree everything felt in the beginning, and how exciting it all was, and how little we knew about everything haha! Including how NOT to build an electric fence. And there seriously was 1.5 meters of donkey manure downstairs when we found the place, it took months and months to clean out. We put it all on the vegetable garden though so didn't go to waste! I find snakes and spiders equally scary, but Robbie definitely finds the rats the most scary/ his arch nemesis'!

Wow another beautiful video, very captivating. Amazing how much you have done in two years and it looks like with little experience, making mistakes along the way and learning from them. Though what an incredible space you have created and what a world for your daughter to grow up in!

Yes we have come into this project with basically no experience, thank goodness for TH-cam, because we have learnt everything from watching other people all over the world try these things before! We hope it is a nice world for Sage to live in, definitely a little different to the city life he was very close to being brought up in! Normally I leave cryptic criticism intended to encourage and inspire. But I really enjoyed this video. It was candid, real, and heartfelt. Only thing I would love to see, or rather hear, is instead of the written descriptions in the video clips it would be way cooler to hear you guys narrate what is going on.

Yes, it seems like we are tested everyday, it is quite relentless with all the stuff going wrong, animals eating everything, extreme mountain weather, but we're definitely getting a bit better at tackling it all, and leaving some space in the day to appreciate the beauty of this place! 💫💖

You can purchase tubular tree protector mesh guards that you put around the young trees which protects them from been eating by pests until they grow to a reasonable size.

We starting doing this after learning the hard way 🤦🏻♀️ Still, it doesn’t work so great for the wild sheep (22:37 of the video) they just flatten the ring fences and chomp away! Still trying to find a neat, cheap solution. Perhaps we should fence off the WHOLE land! Any other ideas welcome 🙏🏽

Renovating is really hard, yes! The view does make things a bit nicer, if you’re not too tired to remember it is there! Wildlife is a big reason we moved here, although there is only so many times you can think nice thoughts about a wild deer eating your trees!

After spending 3 years renovating this house we can say that it takes between 10-20x more effort to reform an old stone house like this with no foundations (and with no straight lines!!), than it would be to build a new building! Haha. So yes, you are completely right. But we're really enjoying the journey, lots of challenges to overcome but it's rewarding to see what we've built. Hope you enjoy our other videos!

Hi. I'm in the central valley of California. They use electric fences for sheep here. I don't know the details. But flocks are moved to fields and sectioned with hot wires to eat alfalfa fields down. This makes the alfalfa go dormant for winter. I'm curious why it didn't work for you.
Thanks for your comment Daniel! We spent many sleepless nights wondering this same thing... one farmer told us that if you put sheep inside a fence, and have lots of nice food for them to eat they will usually stay inside the fence. But if the sheep are wild, they are searching for new pastures, and we had lots of alfalfa and other grasses we had planted around the olives so they wanted to come and eat it. And then when all the sheep charge the fence at the same time, the first few will get 7000 volt shock, whereas the sheep behind force their way through and don't feel any shock, and by that point the fence has been torn out so the rest can walk through! The electric fence works really well against wild boar though, they are much more sensitive. It's like you need a different fence for each animal here!

BTW, Shepherd dogs and cats could be your very helpful friends.
We have been thinking about getting a dog, just a little worried it might scare away the shepherd’s sheep, and then we’d be in big trouble 🙈 But you are totally right, they would help a lot!
@@ladyandtheowlman As there are wild boars and eagles, there should be predators like lynx and fox. Don't forget about rats. Nature is beautiful... and can be more dangerous than the local shepherd. An electric fence is a good start, but it may not be enough in the mountains. Spain might be a bit less strict, but in my homeland, in the mountains, without a few Caucasian shepherds, cats, and shotguns, we barely survive even one winter

The poor chickens, always easy prey for eagles, hawks and wild boars. My 3 hens live here in Thailand in a 500 sqm round aviary that is 5m high, together with parrots and rabbits. Lovebirds, quails and budgies are in a smaller aviary, within the large aviary. Sometimes ratsnakes get in, but they don't harm the animals. They just snack on food or look for eggs. but I'm always faster.
