2024 Lee Rusznyak - The Makings of a Teacher: Research Insights for quality teacher education
It is commonly assumed that some people are ‘born teachers’ and that the twelve years spent in school constitute much of the preparation they need for teaching. However, this assumption is problematic if we want quality teaching and learning in South African classrooms. Drawing on two decades of research into pre-service teacher education, this inaugural lecture demonstrates why a research-driven and structured approach is essential to support the process of learning to teach.

2024 Jo Kukuczka: Revolutionising higher education curriculum evaluation with Autonomy
มุมมอง 502 หลายเดือนก่อน
Typically, curriculum evaluations measure success through learner feedback, progression data, and the alignment of the above with the evaluator’s values and beliefs. Although not without merit, these siloed surface-level practices lead to all sorts of problems. For example: - judgement of the extent to which outcomes are met, often omits discussions on the worth of the outcomes themselves, - li...
2024 Camilla Håkansson: Building disciplinary literacy through Autonomy pathways
มุมมอง 542 หลายเดือนก่อน
An obstacle for subject teachers can be how to effectively integrate literacy in their instruction. For language teachers, on the other hand, it is not always easy to find appropriate subjects for the students' assignments in the later years of schooling. A potential solution to this problem could be a collaboration between subject teachers and literacy teachers. Such a collaboration could enri...
2024 Jane Waite & Paul Curzon: 'Tear and share' research-to-practice activities with semantic waves
มุมมอง 1043 หลายเดือนก่อน
As researchers, we wish to not only have an impact in our intellectual fields but also empower practitioners, but how? The notion of ‘semantic waves’ is having spectacular success in teaching computer science in England. It has been taken up as best practice in official guidelines by OFSTED, the national inspectorate, and many English school websites now proudly proclaim they use semantic waves...
2024 Steve Kirk: Shifting from student to staff development: Reflections on recontextualising LCT

The big picture challenge: Closing the attainment gap for underrepresented student groups at Durham University in the UK. The focus here: Encouraging lecturers to embed academic literacy work into their own teaching practices. 2024 Kirstin Wilmot: Bridging gaps between theory & practice: What LCT brings to academic literacies
มุมมอง 884 หลายเดือนก่อน
Bridging gaps between theory & practice: What LCT brings to academic literacies Academic writing is a bugbear across university contexts with different approaches being offered on how to 'fix' students' 'writing problems'. Despite academic literacies theory offering a transformative understanding of academic writing as a social practice through which disciplinary norms and values are expressed,...
2024 Erika Matruglio - Identifying identity; Constellating culture: Equity, diversity & inclusion
มุมมอง 914 หลายเดือนก่อน
Cultural identity is integral to how we exist in the world, however it is differentially understood, often emotionally and politically fraught and a site of struggle when cultures clash. In workplaces with large workforces the possibilities for cultural clashes can be amplified and mechanisms for dealing with difference are critical. In this Roundtable, Erika Matruglio discusses differences amo...
Power Up 4: Reach for the stars! Constellation analysis
มุมมอง 1035 หลายเดือนก่อน
Practices are incredibly complex and changing, yet most attempts at grasping their forms offer simple, static typologies. Constellation analysis offers a revolutionary way of mapping practices, one whose game-changing potential has yet to be even begun to be explored. A key reason is that they have yet to be introduced properly. In this session, Karl Maton explains these concepts in a way that ...
Power-Up 3: Power to the people! What’s legitimation got to do with it?
มุมมอง 1545 หลายเดือนก่อน
Until now, LCT has been little used to explore questions of social power and how they relate to practices. We are adept at analysing practices themselves, but yet to grapple with how they relate to people’s dispositions to explain why some succeed and others struggle. In this session, Karl Maton sets out how we get to grips with notions like ‘field’ and ‘dispositions’ without the impenetrable c...
Lee Rusznyak: How LCT helps us to think differently in teacher education
มุมมอง 1525 หลายเดือนก่อน
How do we enact the extraordinary vision of LCT in practice and research? Lee Rusznyak discusses studies in teacher education that exemplify these ways of thinking and show what is gained by adopting this vision. This session builds on Karl Maton's talk "Extraordinary vision: How to think with LCT." This session ends with a Q&A discussion with Karl Maton. LCT5 POWER-UP 2, 16 January 2024, Johan...

Theories do nothing by themselves - they need you. To make the most of a theory, you need to have the right mindset to unlock its potential. LCT offers a vision that will change the way you see the world. In this 'Power Up' session, Prof Karl Maton explains the ways of thinking embodied by LCT and which you need to grasp to unleash its power. Maton, K. 2024. "POWER-UP 2 Extra-ordinary vision: H...
Power-Up 1: Now that’s what I call theory! What is LCT?
มุมมอง 2936 หลายเดือนก่อน
One side-effect of knowledge-blindness is that scholars use words like ‘theory’ and ‘concept’ to refer to all kinds of different practices, creating confusion as to the role and purpose of a ‘theory’ and how to use its concepts. In this session I address the questions: What kind of ‘theory’ is LCT? What kinds of concepts does LCT offer? The answers to these questions will not only give you a be...

2023 - Robbie Campbell: How teachers build a curriculum for their classrooms and how LCT might help
มุมมอง 171ปีที่แล้ว
Educators do not simply enact a state or national curriculum in their teaching. First, they recontextualise ideas to create a curriculum which can be used in the classroom. Yet, how this happens is relatively under-researched and under-theorised. Despite its complexity, many educators are never taught about developing a classroom curriculum, and lack a shared language for describing the organis...
