When a long cultivation process has been the way to informally learn a practice, is it possible to school it without losing its main characteristics? How can we build a program to cultivate the knower? Who can acquire the legitimate gaze? In this Roundtable I will analyze a curriculum for the cultivation of popular musicians. The dimension of Specialization is used to understand how a Brazilian popular music school organizes a curriculum that seeks to be different from the Western classical music tradition. The analysis shows how coordinators and teachers conceive the relations between knowledge and knowers in this program; which strategies were employed to promote the desired relations with significant others; and what principles underlie the criticisms they make of higher music education.
