One of the most beautiful (and scary!) drives in the U.S., the Beartooth Highway connects Red Lodge and Cooke City, MT via an amazing road that tops out at just under 11K feet! This man is living life! I’m excited to purchase my first packraft next spring!
It's great fun, for sure! It's a good idea to build your skills on calmer waters before hitting the wilderness rivers.
Excellent… thank you.
Thank you too!
I just wanted to point out that the LEDs do tell you when the batteries are low. A red flash after the green cycle complete light is the indicator.
Thanks for this point! I could never keep in my head what all the different combinations of flashing lights meant. 😢🤣
Great video…thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it, Thanks!
Nice video of an area I am not as familiar with. I’ve driven the highway you mentioned but have not backpacked in this area. I did five days in the Winds two years ago and started the Tuesday after Labor Day. Crowds were thin until the Saturday I hiked out. I did a loop out of Big Sandy Portal (TH) over Jackass pass, across Lizard Head Plateau, over Washakie pass and then back to the CDT via Haley Pass Trail. This area does remind me some of the Winds. Which map source were you using for this trip? You called some lake names that don’t appear on the GAIA Topo map I was trying to follow your hike on. Is this considered to be Grizzly country? I’m sure Black Bears are around. Seeing the Moose was a nice bonus. I assume they are hunted in this area? It sure changed course when it detected you so I assumed they are hunted in this area.
The terrain is very similar to the Winds, for sure. I printed more detailed maps from Caltopo, which had more lake names. There are certainly griz in those mountains; after all, it's right next to Yellowstone. The moose was actually quite calm and took her time moving away (editing made it seem different). I was actually concerned she would continue up my way and step on my very expensive tent!! Hunting is allowed there, for sure, but Moose know they're badass and don't care. 😉🤣
@@ShastaBubbathanks for the response. I assumed that would be Grizzly country for the reason you mention. I agree, Moose are badass and know it. There’s some short video clips I’ve seen where Momma moose is defending her young one from a Grizzly. She won. I wondered if possibly you used Caltopo. I’m considering the switch to it from GAIA. The ownership of GAIA changed fairly recently. Thanks for another great video.
I know the place. It was on my radar when picking a place to do for my first trip to the Mission Mtns. I would come from the east. . Be careful with food like that that smells and so close to the tent. So close to Bob Marshall Wilderness and GNP, so I know there are Ursus horriblis
I've heard the trail in from the East is a better one. Valid point about the food. Although I did hang my food later and eating cold doesn't give off as much scent, there are certainly griz in the Missions and it doesn't pay to be careless. Thanks!
Great video man
Thanks for the idea to go there in the first place!!
Love the plateau! Soooooo many lakes to go to and easy traveling to go off trail... well, except for the whole 10k ft thing. 😂
Yeah, no kidding (huff, huff). 😊 Tons more to explore there, for sure!
What gorgeous scenery! All the more impressive on the big screen tv. Reminds me of my brief venture into Wyoming's Winds. And I actually got to see you make a few casts😉. Pleasant way to spend a bit o' time on a lazy Saturday afternoon for someone that doesn't care one whit about watching an SEC football game.
Glad you enjoyed it! It is very similar to the Winds, I was thinking the same thing.
How often do you use the inner and what kind of conditions do you use it for?
Mainly just when I expect there to be bugs, so in the northern Rockies, that means June-July. I also began taking it in the late fall (like October) to help with wind block and rain splatter.
Thanks for sharing this. I backpacked to Martin Lake basin, as well as Becker Lake a few years ago. Nice to see the way you made a loop out of the them. (BTW: at 2:38 you say this is Memorial Day. Was it actually Labor Day? Don't see any lingering snow...)
Oops! Yep, you're correct, I meant to say Labor Day. Don't think you can even access the trailhead on Memorial Day. Thanks for the comment!!
Beautiful video. I just discoverd yo and found your videos on dealing with anxiety. I found them to be very informative. You are an amazing hiker. And what a beautiful area to hike.
Thanks so much for the kind words! Also, very happy to know the anxiety videos are still helping people. 😊 Happy hiking!
@@ShastaBubba .. I've been practicing the diaphragmatic breathing since I read about it. Thanks again.
Great video of the area. The moose sighting was wonderful and I like how you build in flexibility for your route. No real stress to get to point B in a certain amount of time, sauntering not hiking, love it. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the feedback!
Another nice video Dan. Keep up the good work.
Thanks so much, really appreciate it!
hell yeah! Love the beartooth plateau! Some of the worst storms I've been through have mostly been there lol
It sure is high and wild country, prime for thunderstorms! Thanks!!
Looks like a great time! Thanks for sharing your adventure! 🥾🏕️🏔️
You da Man! Hope that visualizing yourself on trail helps work go fast today. 😉
What a GREAT video! I'm a long distance hiker, and my husband hates all forms of hiking, which makes me quite sad. You sound like a great hiking partner. My 20 mile days mostly came to an end 8 years ago after I recovered from brain cancer (my favorite body part). The chemo destroyed the fat pads on my feet, so hiking more than 10 - 12 miles per day blisters the heck out of my feet. Totally agree about dumping the hiking boots! If anyone has any great ideas about long-distance hiking with feet with no fat pads, I'm grateful for the advice.
Thanks so much for sharing your story! I would humbly suggest that the answer isn't to increase your ability to hike farther, but to focus instead on mindfully enjoying each moment being in the woods and on trail. Remember that scene fromt the book, "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" when the dad is backpacking with his son and the son refuses to carry his pack any farther? Dad begins to carry both packs, one at a time, leapfrogging up the trail, and he says to himself, "most people would get upset about having to carry both packs and travel three times as far, but the goal is to be in the woods with my son, so what difference does it make what we are actually doing?" It might be fun (and joyful) to shift from traveling a long distance to see more country to seeing the country you travel on a closer, deeper level. It's amazing that you are able to hike at all, so let's slow down and focus on celebrating that miracle! And keep hiking!!
@ShastaBubba You speak the truth, and I have to say, as a Buddhist, I appreciate your Zen approach to hiking, Motorcycle Maintenance and all!
Always like to tune in to your gear reviews and comparisons, they are top drawer. Even when I'm not in the market for upgraded gear. But gotta admit that some of us might want more of the whoops and hollers that come with your packrafting adventures 😉. And the scenery that comes with your hiking/backpacking treks.
Thanks John! Working on my trip to the Beartooth Plateau right now. Should be out next Saturday!
@@ShastaBubba Patience is my middle name! Something to look forward to on the weekend next!
I have a pro 2 +, and I watched Mr. Durston's videos several times, and got fairly good pitches. However, I found it a lot easier for me to set the stakes along the seam lines diagonally first, then just pull the 3rd corner until it's tight in both directions (meaning a right angle) and then setting the rest of the stakes. I agree that the weight of a couple of small stakes to keep the vestibule in place when the door is open is not a big deal, or maybe you could find, somewhere out in the woods, a couple of sticks to act as stakes. :-) Using it in the Olympic mountains in Washington, where I live, I have been surprised at the lack of condensation problems. The only con I would ding on, is that with all the mesh, and air flow for stopping condensation, if you are in a very windy camp site, you will get a lot of wind in the tent and better have a good sleep system.
This is great information, thanks for sharing! I was wondering specifically about how it would do in a rain forest like the Olympics, so appreciate you taking the time. I'll have to try your method of pitching!
Love these comparison videos.
Glad you like them! Thanks for the feedback!!
Other great informative video. Thanks. I love my XMid Standard 1p. Which your videos helped me decide on and so glad I did. Thanks again.
Thanks so much, I'm really glad to hear that's working out for you!!
Nice trip. Always love the videos where my favorite channels converge. Looks like a gorgeous area, but one where you really have to earn the views.
Thanks and you're certainly right about working for the views! We'll be trying this trip again, I'm sure.
Btw, what stakes do you prefer these days?
I use a combo of 8" Easton Nail stakes (like these from HMG: www.avantlink.com/click.php?tt=cl&merchant_id=47cd1998-e608-4548-aa0f-3d33e964ad3a&website_id=345523ea-2f51-482a-8572-4d2f865d5022&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hyperlitemountaingear.com%2Fproducts%2Fultralight-tent-stake-kit%3Fsrsltid%3DAfmBOoq_I2EBMXWlaI4esCEraY0imB-lizqcuwezMwcP_UQ04JsdVmOo) for the corners and 4 MSR needle stakes for the vestibules and mid-panel tie-outs. You can find negativer reviews of both these stakes, but I've never had one break or bend and I pound the crap out of them with rocks into rocks, so there's that. The Needle stakes are getting hard to find and the MSR Groundhogs (www.avantlink.com/click.php?tt=cl&merchant_id=e295c418-295a-447c-b265-734e25f82503&website_id=345523ea-2f51-482a-8572-4d2f865d5022&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rei.com%2Fproduct%2F682543%2Fmsr-ground-hog-stake) seem to be more popular. They work great, but are a bit harder to clean the dirt from in the morning (with the flukes), but I'll probably drift toward using these as I gradually lose my needles. Thanks for the question!!
Is the DCF version more noisy in the wind? Not a huge deal but sometimes it seems like they are.
Wind isn't much of an issue, I think, since the shelter ideally is tied down and taut enough not to be rattling around. People often complain about rain being louder on dcf than silpoly or silnylon, and I suppose that's true to an extent; however, rain pounding on anything 4" from my face is going to be loud no matter what, so I don't really worry about that myself. Thanks!
What a beautiful drive! Thanks for braving the road with a camera in your hand for us!
Taking one for the Team. Thanks for braving this video, my friend!! 😉🤣
Always value you input 👍
I appreciate that!
Great comparison video! Both are such well-designed, high quality tents, either would be great but the DCF seems even better than my sil poly version in some ways. Thanks!
You're a good American my friend. Thanks a ton!!
Hey Dan! Appreciate the video! I always enjoy hearing your experiences with things. Thank you! All the best from Norway. 😊
Thanks so much; always appreciate the support!!
I recently set up camp on a rock ledge with no place to use stakes. The Xmid pitch was not a pretty sight with many guy lines going long ways to far off bushes, wedged into cracks and even tied to rocks tossed over the edge. So I recently bought a favorite stand alone tent I've had in the past. Using it this past weekend I've come to realize even more why I like both of my Xmids so much.
Was that because the freestanding tent was so much heavier? Or other reasons? Btw, do you know about the method of pitching called 'big rock little rock?' Might be an option when pitching on a rock ledge like that. Bet you had a fun night! Thanks!!
@ShastaBubba the heavier tent (BA Copper Spur) didn't bother me so much but the length of time to set up has become annoying compared to Durstan. Because of the wind I didn't trust rocks. I needed secure tie off.
Thanks for a spectacular windshield tour of the Beartooth Highway!! Really enjoyable on the 60" tv. Yes, scary for us flatlanders but a highway like the Beartooth oughta be just another drive in the country for you western mountain state guys and gals😉. Learned quickly my first time driving US-550 between Durango and Ouray Colorado you can't sight see and drive at the same time. And that's hard not to do for us flatlanders. A very nice change of pace from your other videos but looking forward to the hike that followed and all your other regularly scheduled progrramming👍
Thanks so much John! Have to admit, just watching this again while editing made my feet clench in a few places. 😉😂
@@ShastaBubba Well, wouldn't be my feet clinching; us flying folk have a phrase called the "pucker factor." Beartooth I'd give about a 9 on the pucker factor scale of 10 😁😉
Thanks for sharing! At one point in my life I knew that road by heart! It’s been too long since I’ve driven it myself! 🏔️🥾
Definitely an area worth further exploration; although, I think that the lakes on the Beartooth Plateau are better suited for camping with buddies (hint, hint), fishing, day hiking, etc., versus covering a large distance per day. Thanks for the support!!
I'm curious how you would compare your favorite Kufu mid to the newer designs like the Durston X mids? I would love to see a comparison video of these two types of shelters. Is your favorite still the Kufu mid style?
Thanks for the idea! I was able to score a used X-Mid 2 Pro this year and have been using it all season. The condensation issue hasn't been a problem at all, so it's now become my favorite shelter (vid on this soon!). The Khufu is still the best double wall for the weight though.
Excellent advise. Thanks for sharing!!!
Thanks! Glad it was useful.
If you ver you are looking for other pack raft adventures, check out Barefoot Jake’s Olympic Mountains channel. Olympic’s rivers are incredible, though be never rafted them: th-cam.com/play/PLeVl-PiFPOkUYZQmmsv9jwT_hzFkQmHbB.html&si=7izs6RezfswUylEC
The spotted Louie trail is a tough one to follow. 55 if i remember correctly. Theres an unmarked trail in the Montana creek drainage that is roughly a mile long and pretty vertical. And gets to a 4x4 accessible road, use it to access and fish below the Oxbow on the LNf. Glad you guys got out ok, since you’ve seen the snow peak to trappers portion, you should drop into Foehl creek off buzzards and head up larkins crk to continue the journey where you left off. Best to do a through hike in that scenario leaving a shuttle vehicle at table or smith ridge. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the great advice! Pretty sure we'll be back to try again and get to the really good parts.
I got the X mid on the first or one of the first drops. It works. I prefer keeping my backpack with me, but I found I could hang my pack in the vestibule on one of my trekking poles.
I discovered on a recent trip how convenient it is to have the pack right there when it's raining in the morning. Was able to pretty much pack everthing while staying dry inside the tent.
100% useful information , thank you, with great respect!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the kind words!!
As a backpacker I have been charged twice and used the bear spray both times. It worked thank god, you can't believe how fast they charge. I do carry a sidearm but was able to discharge the bear spray from my hip as that's about all I had time for. You are talking about 3-4 seconds. They are incredibly fast. Once I deployed the bear spray I drew my sidearm. I usually carry 44.mag 629 Traiboss or pistol grip shotgun.
Thanks for sharing your experiences and glad you're okay!
Excellent comparison!
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks!!
Cool video. I wonder what the helicopter was doing up there?
They flew in a compressor and a couple workers to repair some communications equipment that is placed next to the LO tower. It was damaged over the winter, the pilot told us.
Never a fail when you're helping out your best friend....Glad to hear Timber is feeling better. Tom
You and me both!
Glad to hear that Timber has recovered (I suppose the same goes for Dan and Travis 😉). I enjoyed the collaboration and looking forward to Travis' video, too.
Thanks a bunch and me too!
Everyone can rest easy, Timber has made a full recovery! It's too bad we had to cut this one short, we cut out right before the good stuff! It just means that a redemption trip is in order! Thank you again for everything that you did for Timber and I! I had a really great time hiking with you and I really hope we get to do it again!
Redemption Trip!!!! Absolutely up for that my friend! Happy for Timber's recovery (and yours and mine too).
Great effort guys!...so glad Timber is doing well...My red heeler Ding can't do the longer treks anymore...rear hip problems, so these days I shut him down at about 6 miles...just not the same bagging peaks without ol Ding along...I greatly enjoyed watching you and Travis hiking together...hope to see more!...MTwoods
Thanks Woods! It was a lot of fun (except the hiking, like Travis said). 🤣 Did I ever mention that Shasta and Bubba were the names of two of my best canine companions in the wilderness? So sad when they can't join anymore.
@@ShastaBubba No I didn't know that...but a fine tribute to Shasta and Bubba...I once had a four legged friend named Shasta and think of her often.
Enjoyed seeing the two of you together! Disappointing that y'all had to split up and cut the trip short but it was for all the right reasons. I'm as big a fan of Timber as I am MW, but don't tell Travis I said that. Nice scenery from the lookout towers and hope to see you two together soon. Maybe packrafting if Travis is willing😉
That would be fun. I'll see what I can do!
@@ShastaBubba I'll work on him from my "end." 😉
Glad to see Timber doing better. His breed may have issues with carrying a pack.
He's a trooper, for sure. Thanks!
Btw hate the peak pocket. But anything more then a headlamp it not very good.
With you on that!
I love everything about pitch, size, weight..I love that I can have my dog on one side and gear in the other. But the mesh in my face when laying down might make me buy something else. I am not sure the pro might solve this angle of the saggy mesh of the xmid1 design? Or maybe I should have just bought 2 or stuck with maybe a UL freestanding with steep uniform walls.
I scored an X-Mid Pro 2 used and have been using that exclusively this season as a sole shelter. Solves the mesh problem and I've been surprised that condensation has been minimal.
@@ShastaBubbait fits my 25" pad fine and head room is fine sitting up...but the right side mesh is just in your face. I wish I bought 2 or a tarp tent. and the single is fine and sleeps fine but it is annoying to have mesh in your face all night from the angle of the wall.
@@cavemandancer No doubt. Maybe sell it on Gear Swap and invest the money in a 2p? Or try to think of it as cozy? 🤔
Many animals piss and shit in streams to cover their tracks as well
That was worth it - thank you. I just picked up a pair of CAD$40 poles off Amazon, to try things out before I commit to "better" poles. So I've been studying up on advice and technique, yours has been great. As a newbie to trekking poles, it's weird how much extra 'boost' you get that pushes you forward. I'm also hoping use of poles will lead to a less sore back, and reduce the swelling in my hands since they'll be at chest level instead of pocket level all day.
Yes, that is another benefit. Thanks!!
