  • Which is the best between the Silpoly X-Mid 1 and the DCF X-Mid Pro? I'll walk you through all the similarities and differences, pros and cons of both versions to help you make an informed choice on which is the right ultralight backpacking shelter for you. (For reference, I'm 6' even and am using a 4" thick sleeping pad in the video).

I’ve been flip flopping between these x-mids for quite a while. I just ordered the XMid2 v2 yesterday and it came down to a few factors. #1 space, I’m 6’4 so went with the 2p, was close to getting the 1p tent but after lots of videos, even if it’s a bit much, I decided I needed the extra room, especially with a 25x78 Big Agnus and an x-tall/wide EE quilt. #2 the double wall. I live in humid ass Houston and was worried about condensation on the pro, being tall I’d definitely bump that wall. I also really like to can set up the XMid2 in stargazer mode or do without the mesh entirely, the solid seemed too enclosed for me. #3 Cost, it’s over twice as much for dropping around a pound, I’m not that serious about being ultralight. #4 Privacy, the pro looked almost see through, I think my pale naked body would glow for everyone to see inside that tent when changing 😂

I just purchased a X-Mid 2P and I'm even more excited to receive it now! Thank you so much for the most thorough review of these two tents!!! I love how you compared every little detail for us detailed oriented folks.
Also, no other review mentions that you can pitch the 'standard' tent with the trekking pole tips down. I preferred it that way to so the handles have less wear & tear, yet all the pictures show it pitched with the tips up. Now I don't have to worry about that. Your content is some of the best out there on the subject matter of camping and backpacking.
It’s a breath of fresh air to listen to somebody who speaks so clearly and articulately.
Something consider is the consumer appetite of the ultralight community. It’s unlikely that anybody purchasing an ultralight DCF tent, costing over 700 USD, will go more than one or two years worth of backpacking without replacing it for the next latest and greatest model to capture the hearts and minds of the Internet.
    Admittedly, this includes myself.
I would sooner spend the money on DCF and replace the shelter when needed. Additionally, repairing pin holes in DCF is exceedingly simple compared to nylon.

I just got the standard 2p and every time I use it, it rains. I am only 5’1” so it’s like a palace for me, which was helpful because I needed to set it up fast and get everything inside before the ticks got me and my gear. I went with the 2p because I wanted to be able to spend a significant amount of time in it, if the the weather got bad. So far, I’m really glad I got it and not the dcf version, as it sounds like my poly version is going to last longer. I adore this tent and don’t think I will use anything else moving forward

I have the XMID 2P (Standard) and am very pleased with it. I have owned it for nearly two years. It has been on the AT and many other trails in the country within our National Parks. It has held up in heavy rain and wind and condensation has never been a problem. (I am 6'2" @ 220lbs and have plenty of space)
The XMID Pro looks like a great tent, but I cannot justify buying one when my XMID 2P is working for me; plus the price point of the XMID Pro makes it an equally unjustifiable purchase. I have dialed in using my XMID 2P to match my use case. I would purchase another one if I had a need to get another tent.
Whenever I use it, it turns heads. I get lots of compliments.

Wow, I didn't realize there was such a diff between the standard and Pro. I love my xmid 1p (I have both v1 and v2 of it). the weight savings for me is what makes a difference....at 5 feet tall every ounce makes a huge difference. for inclimate weather the dbl walled...i have the xmid dbl wall.. with my other non durston ultra light tent i found there is no or little condensation that forms with both vestibules open...cant wait to order the xmid pro. would not use side pockets. would rather run a guy line inside and hang my stuff for easy access...2 zipper style is preferred for many reasons. would add a guy line outside connection about 18" between top and bottom to help extend tent around head.

I got the regular 1p because I can't see spending $700 on a DCF tent. there's not a lot of space inside the net, but it feels quite spacious under the fly, and as you point out you don't have to worry about brushing against it. the dual vestibules are not only spacious, but very efficiently oriented. all told, I feel less claustrophobic in the xmid 1p than any other 1p tent I've experienced.

I agree with you with regards to the difference in durability of DCF v sil nylon or poly. I own a Tarptent Notch Li and have used it for 100 nights. I have been very careful to look after it due to cost. But, due to the DCF material breaking down in areas of stress, I have lost confidence and now own a Terra Nova Laser Compact 2. The weight loss to me is 600g but I feel more secure as it's a bomb proof design in wind and rain and much more long lasting with regards to use. I agree with you that the love affair with DCF may be coming to an end.

Also, the floor space is larger in the standard vs the pro, although that might be applicable in the 2P. It really depends on budget and purpose for the shelter. I thru hike, walking >30miles/day for months. Hence, the weight savings of the Pro are well worth it. Would I recommend it to non thru hikers over the regular Xmid? Not really. If you're really into gear and it's a hobby then that's fine if money isn't an issue. But the weight difference really doesn't matter for most backcountry activities people engage in.
I consider them functionally equivalent by the way. Condensation is a non issue once you're used to the shelter dimensions (if they're large enough). As you said, double wall still gets wet. I like that DCF dries much faster. This is very important to me as I try to avoid stopping if possible (because this has a big influence on daily mileage). Also yes, DCF gets pinholes but they are so easily patched that it's not an issue. DCF shrinkage is the real concern but my Duplex doesn't suffer from it in a noticeable way after 2,200 miles and 7 years...
I got the Pro 1 because the Pro 2 is really large in foot print. I keep it around for trips with other people though. I also have a Hexamid Solo tent but it's too tight for use in a rainy environment. But great out west at 10oz. It's not as confident inspiring with winds. So the Pro 1 solved that and I will take it on the CDT when I do it.
I wish the Pro 1 used one of the vestibules for interior space but I can see why Dan didn't go down this route. Ultimately, the large vestibules keep rain and storms farther away from me and I can leave my gear there just fine.

Glad you're liking the tent. One thing we do with our DCF tents that few other companies do is that we pre-shrink the DCF. It's a special/secret process that pre-shrinks the material so shrinking during use is vastly reduced.

I was in platonic love with the pro for a while but I saw a video where it showed just how tear prone the DCF tents are. After watching this video, I am convinced that the regular is the way to go. It looks bigger in other videos I’ve seen but kinda small in your video where the mesh is right next to you. Mind if I ask you how tall you are? Thank you for this very thorough comparison between the 2. I hope to see more about long term use as I plan a thru AT hike.

One other comment. There are dyneema patches with tabs available. After I get some experience with the Durston tent, I am considering putting on of these somewhere on the inside from which to hang a small led light so I can see at night to find items or pack up in the dark without the narrow beam of my headlamp. Just a thought for consideration.

Have you had any experience with the Z-Packs Duplex. If so
How would you rate the X-Mid Pro against the Duplex?
    Also, how do
You think the X-Mid would perform in strong winds i.e. 30-40mph. The Duomid stands up well to high winds.

Thanks so much! I am not familiar with the Duplex, but my first UL tent was the old Hexamid and I would say any version of the X-Mid will be more comfortable to be in due to the floor laying flat and greater use of space. Also, I didn't like the low doorway, which I believe hasn't really changed on Zpacks tents since then. Remember when comparing that the Duplex is a 2-person rated shelter, so should be compared to the X-Mid Pro 2, which my buddy Chris has used for one full season now and says it hold up great in high winds, especially utilizing the extra tie-outs.

@Below Average Wild Camper I just switched from the Duplex to the Pro 1. While obviously the floor width is much less, the Pro 1 feels taller to me when sitting up. I almost bought the Pro 2 because I really like all that floorspace to spread out my gear in the tent, but ultimately I wanted something smaller, and I was willing to give up that extra space. The half moon zipper and the door clips on the Duplex are a pain to use, while the Pro 1 is a one handed operation. If you put 3 stakes on both ends, and one at each door, the Pro 1 feels much more stable even without any guy lines. The Duplex always felt like it was going to collapse to me, and it did a couple times. The doors on the duplex can also blow open when the wind changes direction, and it's much more prone to rain blowing in since the fly is higher off the ground, even when pitched low. I would say if you only plan on sleeping in your tent, get the Pro 1, and if you like to hang out in your tent on rainy days and spread out all your gear inside, then get the Pro 2. Both are a better choice than the Zpacks tents. Everything from the build quality to the ease of use makes the X-mids the clear choice to me.

I think showing the size of both tents packed down would be a factor. Silpoly can compress but heard DCF doesn't. Weight vs bulk and of course $$ saved are my 3 big factors when purchasing.

    • @ShastaBubba
      @ShastaBubba  ปีที่แล้ว

You're absolutely right and I intended to show that, but forgot due to the stuff sacks being virtually identical in size. The Durston Gear website reports packed sizes as 12" x 4" for the Pro 1 and 12" x 5" for the Standard 1p. This is consistent with my own experience, which is that dcf shelters have always taken up less volume in the pack.

I'm a fan of sil poly over dcf or sil nylon. Due to it's cost vs dcf, and it's recycleability vs both dcf and sil nylon. Also it doesn't stretch like sil nylon, and to your point, it's probably quieter in the rain. I've used both sil nylon and sil poly tents and tarps, but full disclosure haven't used dcf. I have the x-mid 1p solid, used it in -12F 40mph winds and loved it's stability, and bought it specifically for winter camping since I'm not that big (5'6") and don't want to carry a heavier tent. It worked great. I also like that I can leave out the internal netting when past bug season in NE.

Had the original X-mid 1 and loved it, however with chronic back pain due to injuries I cannot imagine carrying an extra 330 grams by choice, so I’ve just ordered the X-mid 1 Pro, and build my own 600 gram backpacks, this allows me to carry an full-length Nemo Tensor wide pad which is heavier, but it’s worth the weight, where as for me the standard x-mid isn’t. Finally, for anyone with mobility issues I’ve found the X-mid’s tall off-set doors significantly easier to access than anything Zpacks or Tarptent offers, even the so-called ‘large’ Altaplex isn’t as easy to access as the X-mid for me. Great video

You could modify the sil poly like the dcf too if need to save grams ... If not going to rain just use the inner mesh part only save even more .. These are a good set of points that you describe. As far as for myself I much prefer silpoly, but don't like silnylon as much even though it is the tougher of the two. DCF and I have a poor history of deamination and a tear in the weave, but despite my tastes, and my full agreement on how even babied DCF does not hold up - I got the DCF version, the Durston X-mid1 Pro. Why? Well I have several Hilleberg tents, and there is nothing on the market with material as tough (not even close) and the details are so well thought out that they are all a joy to use. But they are heavier, with my lightest model, the Enan weighing in at 2.3 pounds with stakes and all. ( I bring extra stakes always) So going down a little in weight with the Sipoly X-mid did not make as much sense as going for the greatest contrast to what I have and enjoy traveling with. I plan to hike about 750 miles starting in September and am still uncertain as to which tent, or which hammock I may take. With the 1.1 pound weight of the Durston Pro, I may even take it as well as one of my hammocks. Choices, choices, eh? We live in great times. I'm really impressed with the design of the whole Durston line.
