As one who frequently uses FRS radios on group hikes and group kayak trips, I am often incredibly grateful that they have a short range. You never know what is going to come out of some people’s mouth! Yes, GMRS is better for most things, but nothing beats FRS radios when you are trying to ride herd on a bunch of kids in kayaks! In general FRS and GMRS radios have the same range over water anyway.
